Couldn't make 'em fly

Built a Sanguinary Gaurd army around Dante...lost every game I played except against Eldar. Just didn't seem up to snuff. The SG are great unless in combat against a power weapon, monsterous creature, or being shot at by AP 1 or 2 weapons. No invulnerable save just rots. Here's the short of what I was playing, and maybe it can be pointed out where I was wrong.

2000 points:

Dante

4x Sanguinary Gaurd w/ 1 Power Fist in each, every model had infernus pistol, and one of the units had the Chapter Banner

1x Terminator Squad

2x Land Speeder with Multi-Melta and Assault Cannon (Fielded as seperate squads)

4x Sanguinary Priests. 4 Jump Packs (each fielded with a SG unit)

Entire Army in reserves. Always opt for opponent to go first if I win initiative roll. (This is to eliminate 2 turns of shooting by them). The priests would go with the SG to ensure they had Furious Charge, but also Feel no Pain. When these units were doing the assaulting it was amazing, but if they ever WERE assaulted, just mowed me down. Originally had the Sanguinator in the build, but when I learned he couldn't join a unit, then scrapped the idea.

Invariably I'd get tabled. Not the least upsetting is on the TWO occasions where Dante is wiped out by an aspiring sorcerer's force weapon. Grrr.

Any ideas to make this playable? Is it tactics, or a build problem?

Unit that survived the most, and always seemed to be most useful were the Terminators.

Thanks,

Balak

packing the sang guard with infernus pistols is the equivalent of a stormraven worth of points. i play with one or two infernus in dantes squad other then that i tend to go fiarly bare bones on my SG no fists, i do take death masks (when they work its lifesaving) and i try to maximize my heavy spport choices for tank busting

I dont see an all SAN Army...I see some San units, and the rest of the points wasted on multiple priests and terminators.

an all San army is a difficult one...but if done right can be very successful. Try this :

1-2 "special" per squad, and 1 power fist or thunder hammer.

drop the terminators, and the priests...take an honour guard and maybe 1 more priest. Honour guard is pretty much a 5 wound priest...and use that 6" bubble as much as possible.

Tactic wise...either have them on the field in cover and jump to and from cover, or deep strike them and have them all work in tangent...one large mob of them attacking 1 - 2 units at a time. Use Dante's " get out of combat free card" as much as possible.

Thats about all I can really give you advice wise.

Have you tried starting everything on the table? And for giggle take 3 full 10man dev sqauds, all with ML's and then combat squad them. That would give you 4 ML's at upto 6 targets, you could take frags for templates with hordes. Additionaly I agree, try to keep the troops cheap, 1 PF and IP maybe? also I like the suggestion for the HG w/ banner.

You should try:

Dante

x3 Sang Priest x2 Jump packs x2 Power weapons (one is on foot and naked with the devs)

Sanguinary guard x1 Infernus, x1 Power Fist x1 Chapter banner (goes with Dante)

Sanguinary Guard x1 Infernus, x1 Power Fist

Sanguinary Guard x1 Infernus, x1 Power Fist

Sanguinary Guard x1 Infernus, x1 Power Fist

Sanguinary Guard x1 Power Fist

Dev Squad 10 man 4 ML

Dev Squad 10 man 4 ML

Now you could change out the Power Fist only squad of Sang Guard for a 3rd squad of Devs depending on play style or you could get a nice squad of Honor Guard kitted out either with meltas x4 and jump packs or some more CC goodies, very much your preference. Right now you have to many infernus pistols. Also you might want to start out on the table instead of in reserve. This is a 2k point list comes out to 1995 points and should work better.

id probably drop most of the infernus, its either over kill, or all wasted... the squad with the most gets dante. priests are good, but you dont need a huge amount of them. 2 would likely do. terminator squads, whilst nice, dont really do much for a sanguine guard army. too slow, dont score, etc. land speeders, i hate landspeeders... would drop the assault cannons on them anyway... and with saved points get a libby with jump pack and sheild to go in a random squad, therefore making them flying termies... and in theory a storm raven... but as we dont gonts a model (unless your feeling inventive) you could just go for a scoring toop that can sit back and shoot, or something like sternguard in cover with las cannons or some such thing...
