Undaunted Ones

CKO

Recommended Posts

After listening to the advice of others on the site, I have made some changes and added some more stuff. I need more help in several areas especially the combat doctrine area.

Origins

The Undaunted Ones were created during the 8th founding to counter the increasing need for CQC specialist near the Eye of Terror. The High Lords of Terra decided to use Rogal Dorn’s gene seed hoping that the stubborn nature of his successors would prove useful when facing the foul creatures of the warp. Needing the new chapter to have an emphasis in close combat, Vanguard Veterans from the Iron Knight’s Chapter was selected to train the new Son’s of Dorn.

Because of the unique CQC training and the vicious training campaigns the young chapter participated in, the amount of time it took to create the chapter was nearly doubled. After a century of recruiting and playing small roles in campaigns the Undaunted chapter was finally in full fighting condition. Trained to face the abominations of the warp the Undaunted Ones are fearless in combat. They quickly earned a reputation for their expertise in close combat around the Eye of Terror and have had several historical clashes against the agents of Khorne.

Home World

The Undaunted Chapter home world Zavian, is located in the Segmentum Obscurus sector, near the Eye of Terror. Zavian is a Feral World covered in dense jungles with the people living in a pre-gunpowder age. The planet has several different types of abhumans that fight against each other for supremacy; in fact the people of Zavian could be seen as one of several humanoid tribes on the planet.

The various tribes often battle against each other for territory, the humans on the planet usually battle to protect themselves or for food. These battles happen very often and is the main source of food, as the winner will scavenge the battlefield taking as much meat as possible back to their tribe. With war being their main source of food and only means of survival they make excellent recruits for the chapter.

Beliefs

The Undaunted Ones believe that they are the Emperor’s weapons, and that fighting is their only purpose. While some chapters such as the Salamanders and Blood Angels hone their craftsmanship skills, the Undaunted Ones view those sorts of things as distractions. They spend little to no time partaking in spiritual activities choosing to prepare for war instead. Fighting is viewed as a sacred duty, and with every sword swung, bolt pistol fired, and battle cried roared they honor the Emperor and Rogal Dorn.

While most chapters have a purpose when they fight such as removing the taint of chaos or upholding a vow, the Undaunted do not require a purpose to fight. Needing little to no reason to fight, the Undaunted Ones have launched several crusades that aid the Adeptus Mechanicus. Being recognized as the creators of weapons the Adeptus Mechanicus, has a large influence over the Undaunted Ones. They have reclaimed lost artifacts, captured live specimens, and have saved worlds that seemed to have little to no value at all, for the Adeptus Mechanicus. Their relationship with them has resulted in the chapter being one of the most well armed chapters.

Organization

The Undaunted Ones originally adhere to the Codex Astartes but after a few centuries they altered the Chapter to fit their preferences. Preferring to participate in large campaigns the Undaunted Ones decided to separate their forces into crusades instead of companies. A crusade would have a Commander as the leader and have anywhere between 2-5 companies worth of marines. The Undaunted One’s Chapter Master would travel on his personal Strike Cruiser with his honor guard giving aid to any Crusade where he believes help is needed. With their preference for CQC, fearlessness in CC, their reckless tendency to rush their enemy, and once having 4 crusades that total more than 1000 marines many wonder if the Undaunted Ones use the Codex Astartes at all.

Battle Doctrine

I want my doctrine to fit my playing style on the table top, and I will be using the Black Templar Codex and the Chaos codex. Black Templar having preferred enemy makes them really good in cc, and the chaos codex has khorne bezerkers which are also good in combat. I will be using alot of terminators as the customizing in the chaos codex is cool, and furious charge and tankhunter terminators in the Black Templar codex is good. I dont know how to word my combat doctrine.

Well, two things that stood out for me was the relationship with the Adeptus Mechanicus. It seems sort of out of place, because the cogboys are really reserved and thoughtful, and your guys seem like the Insane Murderous Psychopaths Club. Also, in that second paragraph under "Beliefs" you use the term "Adeptus Mechanicus" far too often.

Secondly, the Battle-cry seems to have little to do with the Chapter itself. How does "Our Duty, Your Curse" fit into a Chapter dedicated solely to close combat and wiping the floor with the blood of the Emperor's foes?

Personally, I would put more influence on their relationship with Chaos, since they spend so much time in the Eye of Terror, beating the ever-loving mercy out of Daemons. Does the Inquisition suspect them of becoming agents of Khorne? Do they run into the Grey Knights on occasion? Something like that.

I was thinking that the main reason why most Chapters do not assist the Adeptus Mechanicus is because they would ask several questions and would want to know how does this aid the Emperor. The Undaunted chapter would not ask such questions as long as there is a battle.

However I see your point, it would be impossible to tell an Undaunted One to capture a creature when they want to fight and destroy in the name of the Emperor. I will add more about their relationship with chaos, I think I might even make it the focus point of my IA.

As far as the Inquisition and the Grey Knights I would love to know how you would include them into the IA.

Thanks for your time!

The Normish Had some very good points here.

More to the point is how you would incorporate them into your IA. This is the Liber, we're here to road-test your ideas, not supply you with the entire vehicle itself.

If you think that the inclusion of Inquisition forces would strengthen your IA, come up with a suggestion for how your chapter interacts with them.

For me, having these guys as 'loyalist berzerkers' is flying a little close to the Flesh Tearers. Do all these guys want from life is to fight? If so, how do they possibly escape being turned by Khorne as Normish said above?

I will add more about their relationship with chaos, I think I might even make it the focus point of my IA.

If it's the character of the chapter being expressed through their overall relationship with chaos, I think that could work. However if it's just a list of likes/dislikes and dry descriptions, not so much.
