Tournament playing

Call a judge if his slow playing is an issue, but try and make the call earlier in the match so that he may nudge the match along quicker. Most people should be famlier enough with the game before they go to a tourney so a lack of famliarlity is not really an excuse.

I honestly do not believe he was using it to his advantage he was just an incredibly methodical player and he needed 2 toilet breaks and a drink during the game!

Just meant we never got past turn 4 had we gone on I would have tabled him so a little annoying really! I wondered why people don't use clocks like in chess!

It a hard issue to deal with. Only thing as said is possible tell a ref during the event/round you are play the game in, when your oppent went on these breaks, this way the refs could come over from time to time to keep a close eye on your game.

But since the tournament is now done with, it going to be a little harder. Only thing to note the event team for future ref or any event you & the oppent are going to.

But it is annoying when playing slow players, more so when they are doing it purely for gaming side, no honour.

Same time bare in mind you will most like no run into the oppent any time soon. As long as the rest of the event was good that is the main thing.

Before you call a ref over, take the time to tell him your concerned about not being able to finish the game and if he could make decisions during your turn about what his battle plans will be during your turn you would appreciate it. Also if he need to go to the bathroom to do it while you are moving and if he says he is going to go purchase a drink tell him we don't have time and suggest he buy a drink before his next match instead of interrupting game play to do so.

Other things you can do is point out that his last turn took 30 minutes and should have taking 15 or the like. If he moves a unit, moves on to the next unit then comes back to move the first that he can remove it as the original starting point is lost. Tell him its ok to measure to move the fist couple of models of a unit then quickly follow up with the rest of the unit, basically give him points of how he can be a more efficient player.

If all that fails, call the ref over for help.

A question with for all wolves!

How do you deal with slow tournament players, yesterday not completing a game cost me 20 places and I can hand on heart say it was not my fault!

During the Ard'boys semi finals I was up against and orc player using two biker squads 3 large troop squads and three killacan squads. I was playing tau (Commander Farsight set up). The guy pulled I am not rolling difficult terrain tests for my units that should I called him on that. Didn't roll leadership tests when it was called for and used a ruler to measure out nearly every mini in his army during the movement phase and run phase. The fact he also tried to bend the rules in his favor and told the judge that run rules existed in 4th addition and he knew what he was talking about that he can use his run and then declare wahhhh thus turning his run into a wahhh movement. Just a few things out of many this guy pulled and every time something odd happened I called the judge over repeatedly I had the judge at my table at least 13 times and spent easily over an hour dealing with rules alone.

The judge was the only one there for the 22 tables he was judging that was due to his co-judges didn't bother to return after the first match. So the judge couldn't and didn't make any proper rulings. After all the names were announced for winners I spoke with the judge and told him along with four other witnesses that watched the hyjinks and he said if he would of known sooner I would of gotten a much better placing but then again I couldn't even approach him until after the competition due to he was the only person handling the event.

Although I had the satisfaction of annihilating his two biker nob squads with war bosses in one full turn. After his nob biker squads went down at the end of turn two he played even slower and tried to push the rules a lot. At the end of the match he gloated "I am so lucky you called the judge over so much... Other wise I wouldn't of won.. Good for you.." And walked off with a smirk. I honestly was a bit upset by this.. But hey... What can you do...

Over all I placed 6th out of 48 players that attended that day. The judge said if he ruled differently at least I would of had enough points to place third and if he found fault in my opponents game play then I would of tied for first. Although with the four witnesses I had and what they said to the judge separately he had reason to believe that the orc player's game was full points forfeit to me. But the names were already given and the winners set nothing can be done at that point.

Ahhh you live and learn... Next year I am gonna go to the finals.. With Commander Farsight.

I honestly do not believe he was using it to his advantage he was just an incredibly methodical player and he needed 2 toilet breaks and a drink during the game!

That does sound like excessive stalling. One bathroom break is fine, but going to get a drink is quite litrally taking a leak in the ale. You either take your drink into a match, or you wait it out.

All games should be able to come down to round 5. if it does not look like it will, tell him to get a shift on.

clocking it could be worth while. But having to call judges and giving off will likely cost you sportmanship scores... but then it depends alot on the army thats being played. ie if they are measuring a squad thats likely to really hurt me, id want them to measure it right and take their time. if its guard, well lots of models takes times to move them all... so depending on opponent you may have to become more strict with time. Maby knowing your going to face guard you should talk witht the opponent and see if they would be willing to try to keep to a time limit? divide your time by say 2X6 rounds. If you can take less time and afford them it then fine. all the better for the post game banter... B)
classic staling. most tournaments do have rulings for that. and as smoke/toilet breaks go . unless your handicaped , there are breaks between each go the games , if you think it is a good thing to drink 2l of water/juice/cola before every game , well its not my problem its yours. most tournaments I been to in europe have the rule that if you are gone for more then 10 min away from the table [or your opponent is late 10 min for the game] then you just call a judge and the guy gets DQ. 17/0 sucks but its better then ending up 10/10 because someone places on vendetta for 30 min.
