Lords of Oblivion Venerable Dreadnought

Well, if you don't count the Tyranids I've been kinda-sorta working lately. But that was getting repetitive, so I felt like doing something different.

I picked up the plastic Venerable Dreadnought kit yesterday, finally, and started working on putting it together. As it took shape, I realized I HAD to paint it right away, and possibly inspire me to finish the six other Dreadnoughts I already have (one regular, one AoBR, one FW Venerable, and three Ironclads). So I'm gonna try to make progress on it every day. I'd LIKE to think I could have it done by this coming weekend, but given my insane workload in school this week, I think I'm gonna have to settle for the weekend after next, and I thought I'd share some pics as I worked on it.

Anyway, here's there first few. I'm gonna paint all three gun arms so I can swap out as needed (though I'll probably never use the lascannon).

Assembled but not primed.

First painting steps, front and back.

Basically just Foundation paints for now, which'll be followed by the actual shades of blue and green. Also did the bulk of the steel-colored metallics, and you can see how I went for different shades between the exhausts and everything else (i.e. the exhausts look a little dirty compared to everything else).

The basic backstory behind this Dreadnought is going to be that he's the previous Captain of the Lords of Oblivion 3rd Company, succeeded by the current commander, Captain Tiburin. So, while Venerable Dreadnoughts tend to be part of the 1st Company, this guy will still be part of the 3rd Company, so he'll be painted up as such to represent it (i.e. his helmet will be in a Captain's colors instead of a Veteran's, and he'll have proper Company markings).

So next step will be painting on the proper shades of green and blue, and then starting to get into the nitty-gritty detail-work, such as the stuff on his armor plates and all that would-be gold trim.

Here's today's progress. First up was the aforementioned blue and green...

And then later in the day I got a chance to come back and work on the gold trim.

Tried a new technique, similar to what I did with the steel parts (i.e. choosing an appropriate shade as a basecoat). Well, sorta new. Usually I do a basecoat of Tin Bitz and/or Dark Angels Green, and then do the gold on top of that (using Vallejo's Old Gold, BTW). But that tends to come out darker and almost looking kind of tarnished, and I wanted this Dreadnought to have more polished-looking gold, i.e. he looks like he's extremely well-maintained, as befitting his status (reverence of their Dreadnoughts is probably one of the only habits the Lords of Oblivion retain from the Iron Hands). So in this case I did Iyanden Darksun, and then the Old Gold on top of that (somewhat watered down to keep it flowing evenly), and there we go. I'll need to do a wash next. I'm thinking a very light wash of Devlan Mud, but I want to make sure it contrasts right (which sometimes it doesn't with the other technique). Maybe a heavily watered down Scorched Brown applied carefully...

Anyway, next up is the other metallic colors (brass and bronze), the parchment parts, and anything that'll be red (which is mostly just purity seals and targeting lasers) to add a little more balance to things.

It looks good, well done. Only thing that makes it abit messy (its personal) the blue together with the green.

Ehh, I know what you mean, but it only looks like that when the stuff is still in the works. Once I finish all the detailing, shading, and highlighting, it looks way better, as my gallery of finished stuff can show.

Heh, ok. Unfortunately, no update tonight, didn't get home until late and spent the whole evening working on my Halloween costume. Apparently dye for cloth is harder to work with than even yellow paint on GW miniatures, bleh. Should have something tomorrow, though (no major plans and the costume work should be done, so...).

Ok, sorry for the delay in updating. I got some work done on Thursday, but then realized my SD card for my camera had gone missing. My girlfriend was visiting last night, and I was putting in a replacement card I bought, and explaining how my original card had gone missing. As I was doing so, I looked down into my box of Tyranid models and found my original card. Sufficed to say, the g/f was highly amused.

Anyway, here's the next progress shot. Got the other metallics done, along with the reds, the parchment/scrollwork stuff, and started on the intricate symbols/heraldry (specifically his personal heraldry on the shield and the Company symbol on his right shin).

The shield is going to need a bit of clean up, and I might wind up having to re-do it. I stick with basic patterns ala the sample ones in Insignium Astartes. I chose black and bright green for a specific reason, which'll be revealed when I'm done (it has to do with the Dreadnought's name).

I'm pretty much done with the base colors on everything, now I get into the somewhat more tedious process of highlighting and shading (which is where I tend to lose a lot of my steam), but once I get over that hump I'm basically done other than "post-production" with varnishing. Oh, and I guess I should paint the base while I'm at it, too. :)

Ka-bump! Tonight's update is all about shading. Went over the whole model and filled in pretty much all the crevices and recesses with a black micro-tip pen (which is much easier than painting in and more precise than washing).

Next up is final error correction (fixing places where paint got onto the wrong spots) and detail work, then the big hurrah of highlighting. Oh, and the base (I keep forgetting about that ).

Smaller update this time, only had a little bit of painting time (but it gave me something to do while watching news stuff about the elections last night) Main things I did was some detail work, specifically finishing the 3rd Company symbol, cleaning up the shield some more (I went to go re-do part of the green, but realized I couldn't find my Scorpion Green. I found it a couple hours later, turned out it was right in front of me, just with the label facing me so I couldn't see the color :D), and getting started on some of the scrollwork. I might need to re-do the one on his shoulder, looks like some of the letters didn't quite come out right. Also started stage one of highlighting on the blue parts of the armor/weapons (stage one is essentially painting a 50/50 mix of the base color and the highlight color in a broad line over the edges to create a better transition for the actual highlight color. It's pretty simple, but works well enough for the tabletop).

I'm starting to get tired of looking at that black base, so I think I'll do that next.

Muuuuch better, now that base isn't annoying me as much. I can probably go back later and touch it up a little more, but it'll work for now. Also finished the metalics and some other random details.

Pretty much leaves nothing but the highlighting, which'll be more than a few hours to do, probably. I guess I'll just have to roll up my sleeves on it and get this done.

Whoops, I knew I forgot to do something last night. Got the stage one highlighting done, which is the lengthier part of the two-step highlighting process. All that leaves is the stage two highlighting, which is getting the actual highlight color on the very edges of it, and then finish up any remaining detail work (including the Chapter symbol) and get to varnishing.

Nice looking dread you have there! I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more shading on the blue but that's just me, I like deep shadows.

The contrast will be better once the highlighting's done. But maybe I can look into putting a bit of wash on there or something.

Aaaaand now the final WIP shot! All that's left after this is the Chapter symbol and all the varnishing, which in itself will probably take a couple hours, but that'll be it.

Final shots should be up Thursday night, need to borrow a friend's camera for the high-quality shots.
