jbarket
Hey guys, My list is all jumpers with the exception of two dev squads. To get up and running at 1850 quickly to start play testing, my initial list included both Mephiston and the Sanguinor. It's worked well for me, but obviously it eats a significant number of points, and it prevents me from taking a librarian and using the shield. So, here's my issue. Right now, I have a 5 man HG squad that's not very equipped. Taking out one of my HQ choices (or even replacing them with a JP libby) gives me enough points to equip them properly, or swap them out for something else. At the moment, I have 8x ML and 6x MG on the board taking out mech (in addition to 3x PFs and HQs that can conjure up S10 weapons and smash things). I've been comparing the idea of adding additional anti mech by equipped my HG with 4 MGs versus replacing them with SG that will tear through troops versus just swapping them out for another 10 man RAS. At the moment, I have 50 troops on the board. My play style is what I'm calling the red tide... I get the charge and (with FC) hit them first and overwhelm them with attacks. If I continue to pick up RAS, I can move that number to 60, and put 2-3 more MG on the board (plus additional PFs). What do you guys think? With the anti mech I have on the board now, do I need to stuff an HG squad full of MGs, should I pick up a deathstar assault unit in the form of SG, or should I continue my trend of taking RAS? I've only got a few games at this point level under my belt, so I can use some experienced advice. Mezkh
My thoughts for what it's worth... I guess you're running Priests as a given since you mention furious charge, but I can't see you mentioned priests. Is it only the one priest from the Honour guard granting the bonus? How does your actual list break down? Honour guard with Jump Packs and 4 Meltaguns costs 205. The next closest thing is a RAS combat squad with 2 MG, Sarge with pistol upgrade and attached priest with pistol upgrade costs 225, plus you're left with combat squad change of 5 naked Ld8 assault marines costing you 90 points. I find Honour guard the much neater unit. In saying that, there is something to be said for not using them as a suicide Melta drop, given you already have all those ML and MG but actually keeping them more low profile but giving them a company standard to help with your Morale issues. If you choose to combat squad, any squad without a Sarge has Ld8, which is rather poor, and Ld9 isn't foolproof. Have you thought about using the Grim Chaplain instead of Mephiston? He seems much more well-suited to your 'red-tide' army. Meph is a beatstick, but that's all he is. Astorath nukes any morale issues by giving you many more fearless squads, and then he joins a squad that didn't rage to give them fearless and a more devastating charge. He improves this red-tide style army Asto-nomically (I'm so sorry!). And if you take VV, half your games they don't need a priest to do a heroic intervention with furious charge. Extremely useful. jbarket
Sorry, I should have just posted my list, haha. It's very rough, here's how I played last Friday: Mephiston, Lord of Death Sanguinor, Exemplar of the Host 10x Assault Marines w/ PW and 2x MG Sanguinary Priest w/ JP 10x Assault Marines w/ PW and 2x MG Sanguinary Priest w/ JP 10x Assault Marines w/ PW and 2x MG Sanguinary Priest w/ JP 5x Honor Guard w/ JP Devestator Squad w/ 4x ML Devestator Squad w/ 4x ML ------- The idea is for each of the RAS to have a PF and not a PW, but as you can see, I ran out of points. This was my first 1850 game for BA, so it was really rough. Also, I know most people run only two priests, but in the short experience I've had, I'm getting my points worth out of three. I've been considering Astorath. If I played a two character HQ list again, I think Asto + Sang make a better combo since they both buff the army, even though Mephiston is a huge beatstick and a great distraction. Having a lot of squads, Asto's ability is a lot more tempting. I've been thinking about the Chapter Banner. As you can see from my list, my thought was that HG was the way to go. Taking 4x MG reduces their assaultiness, but adding the Chapter Banner brings them back stat wise to where they would have been if they had kept 2x CCW, plus it buffs everyone in their general vicinity in terms of morale tests. I had considering reducing their cost by getting rid of the JPs and putting them in a pod, but without something else to put in a pod, that seems very subjective. If his big nasty armor stays in reserve, the HG are still coming down on Turn 1, and they're now the slowest unit in my army. Since I have to get them within 6" of enemy armor, paying for JPs and dropping them either up the board in cover or somewhere they can get a melta shot off and survive a round of shooting without worrying about FNP denying plates seems like a much better idea. It also leaves me with a lot of points to play with. Adding PFs to each RAS, 4x MG and the banner to the HG is only 100pt. That leaves me enough to take a JP libby and have a little left for upgrades, or enough to pick up more bodies. If I take Asto as my only HQ, it actually gives me enough to bring a 10 man RAS with 2x FL Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/213818-purpose-specific-units-sghgvv-versus-more-ras/#findComment-2544759 Share on other sites
