Logan Wing thoughts, ideas, and rantings

Instead of hijacking already existing threads here on Bolter and Chainsword I wanted to start a thread where the fang can discuss the finer points of running a Logan Wing army. I will be honest that as a newer player, I am still absorbing information like a sponge. So this thread will allow me to post my ideas, and also provide a place for all of you to do the same. Thusly, we all learn from each others triumphs and slaughters.

 

For me the idea of the Logan Wing army is appealing for a coupe of reasons. The first being, that as a long time player of Magic the Gathering I have always found myself looking for ideas off the beaten path, unpopular ideas that prove themselves to be competitive without loosing any of their rouge stature. The Logan Wing has proven itself as an idea that can most definitely win games, and it does not tread into the spam-esque lists. Which as I covered briefly above, I abhor. The second reason being that I have begun the modeling of my own version of Grimnar, not a spectacular one mind you, but my own design none the less. I am depicting him younger with a shorter facial hair and less pelt adornment. Anyways, I wanted to use him, plus he is the dauntless champion of the all father Leman Russ. Oh, and that Emperor guy too...

 

With all that said I want to go ahead and post my idea for the frame work for the build I will eventually be building.

It consists of:

10 man units with the works, the exacts to this unit are still up in the air for me. Any suggestions here are welcome.

3x 5 man units: Cyclone Missile Launcher/2x Thunder Hammer/2x Storm Shield/ Frost Blade (or axe)/ 3x Multi-Melta. My only thought here would be to replace one of the missile launchers with an assault cannon. Thrown them all into a Drop pod and server hot!!

Two rune Priests, twins with a page plus of developing fluff to go along with them. I am thinking of restricting them to being within a certain distance from each other at all times to make the bond of brothers born even more prevalent. Once I have completed this saga and the accompanying models, I will be sure to post them here.

 

Lastly, any army lists, painted models, or conversions are welcome. I know I will be "showing off" some of my army as it comes together.

I'm currently working on a "loganwing", though mine is counts as cos I'm chaos :P

 

Got about three quarters of my force glued together, haven't started painting yet, and only had one game, which i lost.

 

These guys are fun but hard to play with, you either go foot slogging so they are slow, the only transport they can ride in apart from drop pods are landraiders, which replaces a squad, and so you have less troops.

 

dont forget that you will have to include logan if you want a logan wing, and he costs a fair amount too ;)

 

generally for me, my 5 man squads are cyclone, a storm bolter storm shield, combi melta fist, combi melta power weapon and storm bolter power weapon.

 

I have 3 squads like this, and 1 squad with an assault cannon for logan and a rune priest to run around in, as they generally have a 24inch range.

 

also at 2000 points im aiming to have a drop pod with 5 termies, with 4 combi meltas and 1 heavy flamer, and a landraider redeemer for logan/rune priest's squad.

 

oh and our wolfguard cant carry multi melta's, wish they could sometimes :D

What I am putting together is not entirely pure Loganwing, as I intend to field some Long Fangs as well, but that is still under the question. I am inclined towards one big squad with two cyclones and 2-3 smaller 5 man packs, dropping down - with cyclones as well. Each pack will have at least one TH/SS and Twin-WC Wulf guard, the rest are with combi-meltas/plasmas and one generic WG with cyclone.

I did not list Logan in my OP because it thought he would be an auto include. After all, you cannot build a Logan Wing without him!! ;) ...can you??

 

I read the Space Wolf Grey article already Cain, but thanks for the other linky. Just scanning over it I can see that it will help me out a lot!!

 

I definitely want at least two units in pods due to the tedious nature of TDA movement. I thought about running a Land Raider, but like you mentioned nurgelz, the tank alone is point wise the value of another unit. More troops seems like a better idea to me that fast attacks, well, faster ones!!

 

I also had toyed with the idea of running two Long Fang units, but I really like the idea and the possible look on the faces of my opponents when they see nothing but the jaws of the wolf filled with Terminators falling from the skies towards their impending doom!!

I suppose this army for me will be more fluff/fun and less win every game.

Plus I am looking forward to modeling, converting, and painting twenty plus termis!!

while landraider's are the cost of one of our squads (or more), they do provide a wonderful brick wall of cover, my opponents (IG, chaos/daemons and orks) seem to have major troubles bringing down my landraider when i use it in 1500 points, although generally i do have 3-4 rhinos and a vindicator or 2 depending on the force i use, so armour saturation is the key :D

 

my current 1500 point list is

logan

rune priest (in terminator armour of course :))

5 termies cyclone, storm shield, powerfist 2 combi melta x3

5 termies assault cannon, 2 storm shields, 2 powerfists 2 combi melta

lone wolf termie thunder hammer storm shield

lone wolf termie chainfist storm shield

 

This is the current army i am trying to collect, at 2000 points i add a landraider redeemer, lose the 2 lonewolves, add arjac to the assault cannon squad, and get 5 more terminators in a drop pod with 4 combi melta, heavy flamer, storm shield and powerfist.

 

Of course, i dont actually have my 1500 point list yet, missing 5 termies and a lone wolf, but its good to have aims :wub:

 

Oh, and I play rather "soft core" games with my friends, none of my stuff is painted and I wouldn't dream of going to a tourny yet.

Your list looks very much like mine Nurgelz, but I suppose with specialized idea such as this, things are bound to get overlapped!!

 

A while back I remember seeing a thread about runes. In it, somebody posted a like to a company that produces a metallic rune for decorative purposes. Can somebody linky me?? I cannot find them through google to save my life?? Thanks in advance.

well, still working on my logan wing, got about 3 squads of 5 glued together, plus logan, rune priest and a lone wolf, just bought another set of chaos termies, need to order some storm shield arms from a bits site and i should be almost there yay!

 

Still not playing that much though, but i do love the idea of a small elite army, even though 24 models at 1500 points is really not that much heh.

I also left the only TDA path in favour of more dakka by adding a unit of long fangs. Nice to see my post still beeing referenced, I put a lot of work in it.

 

All TDA as I have played it at first is pretty cool, but drop pods are needed for mobility. not having that and slogging it means 1 of 2 things. either you have to start walking out in the open T1 before you killed all the nasty AP2 out there, or 2 you have to run to make it in time, wasting your precious firepower.

 

So I'd always suggest 3 pods, 1 with fangs if you add those, else 3 with TDA. (that's 1700) perhaps for 1500 no fansg and no pod for them is better. @1500 you seriously do not want Njal, as logan is already a must. Then you spent 545 points and there are 2 models in your list.
