Rhino Conversion Qs: Chaos metal trim and roughing it up

Couple conversion questions for a Chaos Rhino I'm wanting to work on:

1. I would like to add some Chaos-style metal trim to the kit. I'll be using the Black Legion doors and the space armour (the fitted version, not the spaced one), so this is just a little trim to supplement the FW bitz, esp on the large flat areas on top (top hatch doors, fex).

My main question is: plasticard, green stuff, or both? I can see the merits of both materials, was wondering if anyone's had experience doing Chaos-style metal trim and, if so, what tips they have.

2. I'd also like to roughen up the surface texture of the Rhino kit, to try and give it a very used look, fex like the surface has been scratched up from countless explosions and collisions and general wear/tear or that parts of the surface have been pitted from corrosion or similar.

Anyone have suggestions for techniques? I've thought about just sanding it, to see if that scratches up the surface the way I'm wanting to, but thought I'd ask if people have experience with this and what tools/methods have worked best. Please note I'm talking about physical changes to the surface "texture" of the Rhino kit, not just painting (although I'll def. be painting it to look beat up as well).

Again, just looking for suggestions or tips from people with more modeling experience than I have.

Thanks!

as for ruffing up the surface, use a rotary tool with one of the cutting disks/ sanding drum/ etching tool (if you are old enough to use one of course). just be carefull not to take off too much at one time, its alot easier to add more damage to those things than it is to take it away!

plastic card strips would work best

you just need to select the size you want ( thickness and width )

just cut to length and then trim to fit fill any gaps that may form with either Green stuff or I prefer Bondo Glazing putty ( found in the automotive section of major hardware stores )

if you need rivets try these http://www.tichytraingroup.com/

here is a speeder I was doing with said ideas

( the rivets where not added yet in this image )

Good suggestion. I'm 32, so probably just mature enough to handle my Dremel. ;)

Thanks for the image. Looks good. Plasticard with some green stuff for gaps and finishing seems like the best route to go.

Regarding rivets, any suggestions as to the best size for 40k?

if my memory service me right

the rivets I used on the speeder where .050 or smaller

as for the gaps I filled and sanded them with Bondo glazing putty ( yes the stuff you use on cars )

here is a link to what I used any produce similar will do

you just spoon it on with a small knife and wait for it to dry and sand it down

after a while you learn how much you put on and don't need to sand as much

here is an image I did for FW looted rhino bits as well to give an idea with rivets
