This was my feeling as well.

My buddy was thinking that you bought them as the same unit so they start together.

I dont have my codex at work but the way i "think" they work is that you buy them as their own unit and your character "can' join them.

Unfortunately not. He's just a big ugly gold dart board.

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHA ;)

You do not by them together. Buying a HQ ALLOWS you to choose to field an Honor Guard if you wish. They are two totally seperate entries, although the HQ choice unlocks the choice to field the HG.

That's right. But just remember that the character can only join a squad if it has the IC rule. Mephiston, the Sanguinator, and DC Psycho Tycho do not and cannot ever join a squad.

If you read the rules correctly you do not have to be an indipendant character to be able to go into an honour guard if it had the retinue rule but as it stands you do. So no non indipendent chapacter can join them. The BRB states that a retinue can be attatched to any 'character' and all special characters count as characters in the BRB the problem id GW just puts the retinue rule in the rule book the doesnt give any squad the retinue rule. They are truely retarted.

Short answer no you cant.

But your a retinue rule away from being able to.

What? Does anyone understands the babble? Where is the retinue rule coming from? Why even bring that up?

So before anyone else gets it wrong, The Sanguinor can never join a unit, and the Honor Guard are a unit to themselves, which sometimes are joined by Independent Characters if they feel like it. I routinely use an Honor Guard as a Deep Striking Meltagun delivery unit. Gotta love Descent of Angels!

There are rules for retinues in the main rulebook mainly for old codexes but I think IG command squad counts as a retinue? But yes only a unit specifically stated to be a retinue uses these rules, and BA honour guard (amongst many others) are not a retinue they are just another separate unit save the fact you dont take up a FOC slot.

Sanguinor, mephiston & psycho-tycho are non independant units of one moddel, which can never join a unit (unless i suppose they had ascess to a retinue which they dont!) nor can they ever be joined by one.

Edit: I feel I should point out that this was also covered in the FAQ :P

its a simple rules look up. doesn't matter what the rules for retinues are, the sang guard aren't a retinue

simple facts, Sanguinor is an HQ choice, he is not an IC. (thus he cannot join a unit)

The Sang guard are an elite entry, a unit in their own right. no where does it give the impression that Sanguinore is an upgrade (see lemartes)... this topic should not have gone on this long...

it's been stated several times, there is no other interpretation of this.

While what you say is true. I feel i should point out that the OP is talking about Honour Guard NOT Sanguinary Guard. However, Sanguinor cant join Honour Guard either so maybe my point is moot.
