Re-invigorating the Angels

Plague Angel

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. Been a while since I've posted here. And that's kind of what I want to talk about. I'm as in love with the BA fluff as ever, but I had pretty total 40k burnout when it comes to all the tactile elements of the game. I know a lot of you have been playing much, much longer than I have. How do you stay interested in your armies? I don't want to start a new one, I want to stick with my BA. I've been considering reinvigorating my lists, has anyone hit on anything strange and fun since the Codex came out? Maybe an all Sanguard army, that's pretty different then the mech lists I run.

There's also been talk among my friends about starting Deathwatch, and they've insisted that only I can be the Blood Angel squad member. None of them trust themselves enough to do it right. That was kind of cool, and may work.

Any other ideas?

One of the main things that I do, and that I have heard other people do, is to switch between which elements of the hobby I'm emphasizing. For example, at one point, I'll do nothing with it besides play; at other times, just paint miniatures; at others, do nothing but read/write fluff; etc.
I say have a second army. Alot of people will tell you that methinks. Plus taking the time painting ur models seems like alot of effort but its very rewarding in the end. I have the playing phases along with the painting ones. Don't play 3 times a week. ull get sick of it, but 1-2 games a week or two is just right. remember u have a life to live still. Go snowboarding with ur woman or something like I do.....Dammit I need more money....

I've really only got one army, but I have a handful of Orks and nids that I paint when I get tired of screwing with BA. Going over their fluff, their rules and painting their troops lets me let go of all of the details of my army for a while. In the long run, I think turning one of these into another army that's a bit less serious in terms of efficiency and so on will make for a good change of pace.

So if you can't justify picking up another 1850pt, just pick up a handful of troops for another army. All of my other stuff has been picked up by trading with people, and I'm far, far done from messing around with it.

As far as how I kept interested in BA specifically, I initially decided to play C:SM when I came back to 40k after a decade long hiatus. It was fun for almost five months, but the play style of BA... just stuffing it right in their face... was enough for me to strip every model and take every single thing apart and rebuild it. If the army... or at very least the build... fits you right, it's hard to stay away from it.

I don't really have the money to invest in a new army right now, even if we're talking only 750 points or so. Xmas may change that, but not likely.

Besides, not only am I rusty at the game, I've never been especially "good." My losses are about double my wins, so I wouldn't mind more practice with the BA too.

Not discounting the suggestion, as there are other armies I enjoy, but just not really in the cards right now.

You can have lists for:

Sang guard

DC

Jumpers

Razors

Rhinos

Terms, on foot or Raiders

Bikes

Dreads

etc.

HEAPS of different lists. I wish I had a 5th ed Dex!

Link: 3++ is the new black

I am sure Stelek has lots of potent Bloods lists too.

If you are getting tired with your play style, your Codex allows you to change it.

Many guys use BA as a charge! army, but you can use them as a horse-archer army and play in Mechdar style. Mobile shooty to drive your foe bonkers, perhaps with a firebase to work off. This is the Tau style of fighting, and is exciting and challenging after playing BT for a while.

Use different units instead of your old faithfuls ~ if Baals and AutoLas preds are the norm, use Devs and Typhoons, for example.

Use the maligned Captain. Use Sang Priests with Bikes and/or Terms for some real hardiness against small arms fire.

etc.

i mix it up using and convertine the other marine kits. dark angel vets and so on make great diversity to paint. also if you build up enough termies you can use other dexs to play them as pure first co etc. also adding like kill markings to models for merrit. my multimelta dred gets a skull for each veichle it desroys, so has more than the number of times its been feilded. or say a nid head under a vets foot for killing a warrior prime. etc. that also gives you a break from painting angels and to try a nid colour scheme.

It's so tempting to think that if something's unique in the BA codex, I should take it just because I can. Like Baal Preds and Libby-Furiosos. I really should force myself to take a Dev Squad some day.

Thanks for the positive response so far, guys. Lots of good ideas.

I'd just look at ways to run what you have in various different ways.

If you have all mech - I am assuming you have lots of RAS on foot then.

Depending on what you have you can vary it up, look towards DoA or maybe Blood Rodeo etc.. An all sang guard army could be fun further down that line (though DoA or Blood Rodeo prob a bit more competative).

How about going crazy, all DC army? Or throwing a ton of dreads at your opposition? x3 libby dreads and x3 dakka dreads?

I'd just look at ways to create a new list out of what you have.

While I love my mech, I can throw in so many options now, from bikes to mephiston to some jumpers or sang guard, even have the option now to run flat tactical squads, or even throw in ANOTHER LC with terms in it! Crazy list of x2 LC's w/ x5 terms in each, and then x3 RAS squads hiding behind, and depending on the mission, either sitting on objectives picking shots, or supporting forward.

All DC was fun when I tried it.

Blood Rodeo? Enlighten me, brothers.

Its basically a biker list - with something like 10 to 18 bikes!

The troops are something like x2 squads of x10 RAS w/ jump packs etc.. Its just a fast and furious list - T5 3++ marines running around spamming bolter fire in every where.

Actually I think it works really well for my mech - thinking of adding the bikes for 1750!

Yeah, Wolves have that problem too.

I must take Long Fangs, I must take TWC, etc. :D

Bloods and Wolves are Marines too!

Typhoons, Riflemen and Devs are solid units. They will play differently than those Unique units, and keep it fun for you.

Steak is lovely, but all the time makes it mundane, if you know what I mean :eek

I just had a silly idea. I may try a for-fun game with a buddy, using the old BA codex. I didn't start playing until our current one came out, so I never experienced the Pedief Heresy. That'd be different, but also similar enough that the game would feel fresh both for that game and going back to the real codex after.

Thats an idea mate.

You do have a ton of options for the BA's - you can even just try and run a standard SM chapter "with a twist" - tacticals, devs, dreads and vindys - gun line style.

@the bikers - its normal squads - of about 6 or 7 guys with the attack bikes attached. Fast and furious. As I say I may add it to my army, it matchs my style (fast but catious) where I can just keep moving fast and get the rentless bolters spamming all hell on people. You do need quite a few to be incredibly effective with them, otherwise I think they just become a "nice support and good for late game objective grabbing" - but even 1 big squad of the guys with rapid firing bolters into squads, sheer weight of saves is huge.

Heya Plague'.

Been a while.

I too have problems with keeping my interest sharp. Mostly because I hate the snails pace of my modeling skills... and loathe the manager of my local GW, so I must play with a social group that plays card games most of the time... *shudder*

This place helps... and hurts... in that I waste time here.

Cool thread.

I think this is a great idea.

There are so many different aspects to this hobby, and flipping between emphasis is a great way to keep interest.

I would have, in the past, recommended going with another army. But, as you mentioned, financial restraints are heavy. Also, I find it may dilute your interest more than focus it.

What I suggest is firstly making sure that what you have is all painted! Playing with painted models all the time makes a huge difference!

From that point try new army combinations and different points size. My group focuses on one points size way too much. Change it up.

Also, try new missions !

Mission Pack

Check that link- try some of the missions, theyre a great challenge and offer something new.

Also, once offs are great, but campaigns are also exciting.

The scope is huuuuge!
