Debauchery101
hey guys i feel kind of like a cheater even thinking about dipping models but for a friendly apocalypse/city fight/planet strike campaign with me and some buddies i will be fielding quite a few plague zombies (90) in a traitor list. i dont have the time to paint them all like i normally would and wanted to get a couple of areas base coated, dip or wash and then do some quick dry brushing. later i can get into more detail. i just wanted them to be like 75% done. so yeah back to the topic. ive seen armies that were dipped ro whatever and im wondering if people just use normal washes or like a wood stainer or some special dipping formula. i tried a few experiments with just washes and watered down paints but cant seem to get the effect like ive seen on some of the dipped models. whatever ive seen done always seems to be a slightly brownish or smoke tone. any tips or leads on where to get or make this stuff would be great. thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/214091-dipping-help/ Share on other sites
Bigger-than-Jesus
Check out the Army Painter's site, they do a range of pigmented varnishes that are designed for dipping Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/214091-dipping-help/#findComment-2549606 Share on other sites
Wicksy
Check out the Army Painter's site, they do a range of pigmented varnishes that are designed for dipping Most of that stuff is just rebranded acrylic wood stain. However their spray paints are great for base coats. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/214091-dipping-help/#findComment-2550346 Share on other sites
raughey
Tried it out w/tyranids, just for experimenting.. I used the wood stain... straight, no thinning .. the best tip I can give is to mount each figure on a nail.. this make it easier to dip the model with minimal mess and lets you spin and shake the dip off the figure to eliminate "pooling".. also, use Q-tips/cotton swabs to draw off the excess stain to also eliminate "pooling" .. just watch out for threads getting stuck :P Color choice is very important when dipping with wood stain Lighter colors - red, yellow, green ,light brown - work really well with the stain . Dark colors don't "pop". To eliminate the shiny finish, after your figure has dried - 2-3 hrs, dull it down with a matte varnish Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/214091-dipping-help/#findComment-2550907 Share on other sites
