What makes us play Wolves?

I spent about a half hour typing out a long, rambling post about why we play the Sons of Russ.If you want to read it,feel free its down below this....but long story short..It is something that speaks to us on a deep level. And if you are one that it does speak to,you will know that the Fang is your home, and allways will be. And if not, they are still a fun army to play with.

Every Space Wolf player that feels the fluff in his heart even a little, would say the same thing. And an addendum to what I posted before...it would be because the Space Wolves live the way I would choose to live if I could. They fight, because they know it is the right thing to do. They do not stand idly by and allow others to come to harm. They live their life in the way that my equivalent of heaven describes. Fight against worthy opponents all day, drink and carouse all night, only to rise up and do the same the next day. They have brothers at their backs who would march through a firestorm of bullets to stand at their sides. They stand for honor,in a futuristic world where it is very rare. They follow what they believe is right and to hell with the consequences, and what others think. They do what is necessary, and if that means going to certain death, they will do it laughing and joking and fighting every step of the way. And when the final bell tolls, our Primarch will return and guide his Sons to save Humanity from its enemies and from itself. Because above all else,we Space Wolves never falter. We never back down.We are chosen, from the best warriors that the harshest death planet in the galaxy can produce, from generations and generations of warfare and bloodshed. And then, only those warriors that are strong enough in heart and mind and body to tame the Canis helix, something that would tear apart any other chapter but ours, will become Space Wolves. We have to remain strong throughout the entirety of our lives, fighting and taming the beast within our breasts. Add to that,we have the saddest duty to perform in the Imperium. When a chapter went bad...who was it the Emperor sent to destroy their brother Marines? Who is it that has an answer to every tactic and unit that any marine army can muster but us? The flaws that would make another Marine fall to Chaos,in us only unleashes the Wulfen, which in its way is just as dangerous, but not malevolent. We are the ones who shield the Emperor's people....and we are the ones who tear the throat from those that lose their way.

When they made the Space Wolves, they tapped into one of the iconic warrior archetypes. And it resonates so strongly, with so many, because of that appeal.

In my heart,I have allways felt the pull of this concept. But even being in the military for 7 years,I still did not find a proper expression of it,except on the gaming table, with the Sons of Russ.Amongst strangers from across the world, who I have nothing in common with, save a love of the Sons of Russ,I know I would stand in the company of brothers. And while brothers might quarrel and fight,still...that thread connecting them would hold strong.

Heh the OP is long is as long in the fang as I am, if sign up dates are any indication to go by :o

It's been said before, but yes, Vikings in Space. Space Wolves are also the closest I'll get to dwarves in space.

I won't even bother mentioning the Squ

Even though I'm more of a Bloodsucker, I have a very, very, very soft spot for the Wolves of Fenris along with a small collection of fluff and models.

SWs have easily one of the best backgrounds available and they look completely badass. Wolf pelts on ice-grey Power and Terminator Armour? Yes please. I think one poster also nailed it totally, by saying they are the true knights of Warhammer 40K. And finally I like Vikings, Werewolves, Beer and Space Marines. So it's easy for me to like the SWs.

Heck... I may be even longer in the tooth... my wife has aged me considerably lately. :P

Yea, I'm still trying to focus on a non-Imperial army right now, but the bar is set high. I keep comparing everything to my Wolves in terms of competitiveness, ability to represent background, and versatility. That's very hard to do with non-Ork army (I won't play Orks). So I find the Wolves do in fact rock in many aspects of the game!

Tomorrow is my 44th Birthday...I have been playing the Sons of Russ since the the days of RT...when they didn't have a specific Dex circa 1989...I just realized that this equates to the fact that for nearly half my life they have been a part of it...so there has to be something there...I have many times been ready to throw in the towel when GW screws the pooch (pun intended) or some R/L issue has caused stressful situations, even when my army was all but lost and I have returned to them...as for playing other armies...I have dabbled with SoB in 2nd and third, the DE in 3rd, IG in 3rd and 4th, but I have NEVER turned away from my beloved pups...

The style of play laid down by Andy Chambers, the vision that Bill King had in his original stories, the artwork of Geoff Taylor and John Blanche...contributed to the history and laid down a frame work from which all others would continue...the fluff and the look and lore has changed a bit over the years but the ideology behind the Wolves has not changed...comradary, drunken brawling and good ole fashioned feasting the whole 'viking in space' lifestyle just seemed to draw me in that much further...so here it is 21 years later and I still hold to the tenets laid down in that first codex...For Russ and the Allfather!

I play dwarfs in fantasy but when all the fantasy players in my club left i changed to 40k i wanted to get an army as dwarf-like as possible but the squats were already dead so i went with necrons i was about to buy my first box of warriors when i saw a box of space wolves and a codex i read the codex and i bought them instead now 1 year later i have the biggest army in my town at 9,500 points and theonly space wolves models im missing are Ragnar Ulrik and the classic Bjorn
Vikings in space.

I rest my case. (Rhyme unintentional but moderately amusing...I mean I'm giggling to myself...)

This.

I like marines, I like vikings, and I like irreverent heroes.

I also love the ease with wich they fit my 'water warrior' playstyle. Rhinos, footsloggin, drop pods- this list can do anything I want it to do with marines and do it well.

I play Space Wolves because they had the coolest background when I got into the game in the early '90's. I've had my little stints with other armies and always got bored with them and sold them off, the wolves have always stayed true to me.

Oh, the Squats! I miss you so much! Come back to us and spread your squatty cheer!

iv been a wolf from the start back in rt days honor demands my loyalty thats and omg they are so cool and always have been that and two other little things

i walk into any of my local stores/groups and the chorus of the wolves are here go's up and that line in that song by the kings of leon "i use to roll the dice and see the fear in my enermys eyes"

woof ..for russ and the wolftime

1: Wolf Guard Ranulf

2: Wolves/werewolf

3: Axes.....

4: Ale.....

When I first started 40k (coming from fantasy dwarfs..... hint: ale, hint: axes), I went with IG only because the cool viking/norse space marines we gone and the store owner said I would have to let him know if I ever wanted to buy some so he could order them. Now I am pondering selling my IG( not sure how the Vostroyans will sell thou ). I like the wolves more and more. granted some things I don't really like, but made my changes (to hopefully show off soon).

Because life doesn't get much better than drinking ale, brawling in the Fang, howling at the moon, and just being an overall badass.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Space Wolf army due to monetary restraints. However fluff-wise, my first and only army, the Night Angels, have strong ties with our brother-wolves and often fight the enemies of the Imperium upon the field of battle together. This allows me to field a couple wolfy allies so my brothers can prove how much more manly they are than the wolves!

me and my friends were discussing how personality figures in with the chapter you choose. Im a space wolf player. love the barbaric viking aspect. the raw wulfen rage waiting to get out. the subtle brutality of their tactics. they are loyal but they are also doing things in their own way. alot like myself.

I was hooked on the fluff right away. After I read the space wolves omnibus I was done for there was no other chapter.

my other friend play blood angels and dark angels and each one fits their personality. I think for most people that are not just into competetion the chapter is usually a reflection of the individual in some way.

My reasons:

Vikings in space. Werewolves in space. Beer. They look awesome. The phenominal stories that can come from their quests. Giant wolves in space. Beer. New models look cool. Codex. Force structure is flexible. Tau weren't hacking it Vs Necrons/Orks (nothing against Tau!). Beer. Badass ChapterMaster/Greatwolf. Charismatic Heros. Most Heroic Chapter In The Universe!!!! They invented Ven Dreds and the fact They Drink BEER!!!!! IN SPACE!!!!!

these and other reasons :)

The fact that Leman Russ told Calgar where to stick his precious Codex, the Ecchlesiarchy or whoever the heck they are get one warning shot when dropping out of the Warp above Fenris, there is an ORIGINAL PRE HERESY company HUNTING Abbadon and Magnus in the warp for 10000 years and they haven't come back to the fang, our Wolf Lords decide that they're gonna go hunt bugs or chaos or Eldar or Tau or any number of other threats where ever they pack up a ship and go, no fuss no muss. Simply put in the best sense of things this is the one chapter that has remained true to it's nature, and short of the Emperor or Russ showing up and saying behave kids, nothing is going to make them change.

I'm an Archaeologist.

Most models or armies I'm interested in have some sort of pseudo-historic ring to them, in the case of Space Wolves it happened to be my prefered field of study, which is basically Scandinavian ("viking")/ northern Germanic.

That, and the entire in-your-face mentality.

For me, it was WD156, particularly the Blooding, and the ritual self-immolation required to become an Iron Priest.

Personally, I never got that into the idea of the army following its' great heroes off to battle. Instead, I've always leaned on my Grey Hunters, with a different random warrior rising to the occasion on any given day. Sometimes, it'll be the lone survivor of a Razorback explosion who slinks in amongst the enemy armor to kill two or three tanks with his meltagun. Sometimes it's a GH overwhelmed by the Mark of the Wulfen who kills a carnifex outright, before it can murder any of his brethren. Any Wolf can be a hero at any moment, and the game is just an opportunity for the next volunteer to find his moment of glory.

I play other things. Hell, I'm pretty sure I win far more often with my IG, but I never have as much as I do playing my Wolves.

I could never be anything but Wolves and truly embrace it. I love Norse mythology. I love the grit they embody. I love the fact that our primarch can kick the butt of any other primarch. I love the fact they aren't emo, they aren't petty, they protect lesser men, and they uphold righteousness and fealty.

Whenever I think of my Space Wolves, I am always reminded of this quote from King Henry V, which some (hell, I'd be willing to bet most) of you will recognize from band of brothers,

"From this day to the ending of the world,

But we in it shall be remember'd;

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;

For he to-day that sheds his blood with me

Shall be my brother"

Many times I have seen a gamer pick up the wolves, just because of the cool "uber" units that you can field with the dex, only to be able to watch them develop into a true gamer who drops such units in favor of a more flavorful army. They become bound by honor. They become people that I am glad to call my brother in battle.

I will happily buy a round of beer for any brother that I meet, and I know that I'll get many bought in return. We are the Sons of Russ, and we are Brothers.

"...be he ne'er so vile,

This day shall gentle his condition;

And gentlemen in England now-a-bed

Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,

And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks

That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day!"

Ahh, yes. We are the Sons of Russ!

Viking werewolves in space. Drinking, fighting, feasting. Huzzah.

When I started in the hobby in '96, I didn't like them at all. I was all about Chaos, the whole "dark" and whatnot. <_< Silly youngling...

Six years ago, I picked SW up for their viking-in-space feel. I haven't looked back. They actually seem like overall good guys in an otherwise dark, forboding universe. What's not to like? The Wolves with wolfy wolfclaws bit irritated a bit when the new 'dex came out but beyond that, the fluff provided and the personality of the army is fantastic.

"Thou dost not wish more help from England, coz?"

"God's will my liege! Would you and I alone without more help, could fight this royal battle!"

Aye, OID has hit the nail upon it's head. The honorable brotherhood of the Space Wolves might not be a major attractant of recruits, but it is certainly what keeps many playing the Sons of Russ. Yes, other chapters have brother hood, but the Wolves take it to a whole new level. Some fear getting reported to their chaplain, others ostracize their librarians or techmarines. We challenge our rune priests to wrestling matches and our wolf priests to drinking contests. Our warriors fight in packs, never separated from their brothers except by the grim toll War demands. Utter loyalty, no matter what, is Russ's way, and players of this craxy game end up resembling their armies.
