The 'baby blue' look

I am wanting to have the baby blue Space Wolf look that is in the most current Space Wolf codex, but I cannot seem to find it online, not one that turns out the way I would like it to. I have posted on other users posts and have asked around and yet I either do not receive an answer or my question is ignored. I enjoy the look of it, and seeing that many Space Wolf players now prefer the grey or pre-heresy look. I thought it best to go against the grain and follow after the 'eavy metal look. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me a link. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Tsavong lah - yes I know I am well acquianted with Space Wolves Grey, but it is too pale by itself, and yet combined with shadow grey it is still too much of a dark grey.

Growler67 - I have read through that entire post and that is not what I am discussing nor asking about. I am wanting to find a paint scheme that is or is very similiar to the SW baby blue that is in the Space Wolves Codex.

Bulldogging - Yes I have read through that article yet I still find its color to be too much grey when compared side by side to the blue in the space wolves codex.

I think I saw a discussion on that and it was determined, due to lighting and photo alterations for book format, that it isn't the real color of those miniatures. I know my current wolves can look midnight blue all the way to baby blue depending on my lighting when I take a picture.

Only throwing that out there if you were specifically trying to match the "official" color. If you just like that specific color in the book I can't help you, but good luck! I know how frustrating it can be to get the perfect color in your head.

Muller - Sorry but I think so

CainTheHunter - I am intrigued that I would like to ask you what you did

narf - I am not a fan of Fenris Grey and find it much too dark for my tastes

Bulldogging - Seriously? If so then that just puts me into the grindstone. To see something that you want to emulate only to discover that all is not as it appears... Darn shame... Well perhaps the guide on GW is the closets thing to go on then.

My personal recipe for this is:

1 - Pick up all those blue/grey pots

2 - Chuck them out the nearest window

3 - Buy some Adeptus Battlegrey and Codex Grey

But apart from my facetious remarks, I have an old pot of SW grey from about 12 years ago (probably when it was bought) and that seemed pretty close to the pictures that GW have. It does seem to be more of a highlight colour than the base colour if I'm honest. Maybe mix a pot of the Fenris Grey foundation with the SW Grey for a midtone?

Oh, and I just remembered. Beasts of War have a tutorial on painting Space Wolves up on Youtube in 3 parts. If I recall correctly, they're painted in the GW scheme as well.

That might be some help.

Yep, they painted SW WG terminator, but they added some Mordian blue, thus the model is essentially dark blue. I was using similar approach as they did, but I did not use Mordian blue.

What I did:

1. Start with Codex Grey undercoat - not black.

2. Paint all armor Shadow Grey - actually I am using Coat D'Arms Shadow Grey, which is a bit lighter than GW.

3. Wash all deep areas with Asurmen Blue

4. Give the model extensive overbrush with Shadow Grey once more, sometimes it is necessary to add some layering of SG+SWG mix in 2:1.

5. Add extensive drybrush with Space Wolves Grey.

6. Highlight with Skull white.

7. Wash deeper recesses with Asurmen Blue or Ogryn Flesh/Sepia once more.

That's it.

I had the same problem that you are having, and eventually had to mix my own pot of paint. It is close to this one by Reaper Master Series. On screen, the paint looks a little too blue, but in real life it is lighter and may need a touch of purple added to it.

I made my own pot starting with GW Space wolf grey and slowly adding drops of Vallejo light blue and purple. About 5 drop light blue and one drop purple until I got the color i was looking for. If I can, I will post photos tonight. Here is a tutorial using a very similar color.

If you mean this version of the GW colour:

Then there is a description of that colour in my Space Wolves WIP http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=212889 - sorry don't know how to do a direct linky on here. The basic colour is a 1:1:1 mix of Space Wolves Grey/Shadow grey/Kommando Khaki but I cheated on the shading and rather than mixing up progressively darker shades I went straight to adeptus grey.

Mr. Danvers - sound advice, yet I can't afford such expensive painting habits :P and I've seen the tutorial done by Beasts of War and again I have found helpful insights yet the color in the end is too dark for my tastes.

littlbitz - Yes I've looked through your guide and found some helpful insights, yet its not quite the color scheme I am looking for.

CainTheHunter - Do you have any pictures of this scheme?

asmodai650 - I am looking at that tutorial very carefully and I believe it is close to what I am wanting to accomplish.

PJ1933 - Your earlier Blood Claw models look fantastic and I am very interested. Would you have a more detailed step by step instruction of your technique?

CainTheHunter - Do you have any pictures of this scheme?

You mean pictures with painted models or detailed guide? I only have pictures - let me know if You need more of them.

CainTheHunter - A more detailed description of the step by step process. When you say deep areas, what exactly are you referring to?

PJ1933 - Would you care to give me a more in depth step by step process of how you painted your early blood claw models?

Thanks to all who have contributed and helped me so far, its greatly appreciated.

CainTheHunter - A more detailed description of the step by step process. When you say deep areas, what exactly are you referring to?

OK.

1. I am using Codex Grey base-coat - You can try Armypainter spray equivalent - because Shadow Grey turns out lighter on that than on black base-coat. I actually believe this is one of main things to do.

2. I paint all the armor parts, including recesses and shoulderpad trims with thinned down Shadow Grey - sometimes I need more than one layer.

3. I give quite a rich wash with Asurmen Blue - it is a bit thinned down, but only a little. I don't bother if something drops on flat areas, since it all will be gone after the overbrushing stage.

4. By using large and flat brush - I found that this technique works for me with flat brushes only - I take some small amount of Shadow Grey and wipe it first on the paper towel and then on my hand. I've found that my hands are the best area to test how much paint is left. When there is barely little left, I stroke the brush generously over the model at different angles trying to get an even look. It sometimes gives You a bit chalky result, which means You have to repeat that stage. The idea is to get an even look on the model, where You already have the shading done.

5. I am using the same type of brush for Space Wolves Grey first highlight. The idea is the same as in p.4, but You are aiming for even less paint on the brush. Ideally You should be getting SWG on the edges only.

6. Repeat 5, but with Skull White-SWG mix 1:1.

7. Now look at the model - most probably You will see that Asurmen Blue will have faded in some areas - in my case, these are usually the recesses around armor collar, around the feet, crotch and some in-built recesses in the power armor - I am sure You know which I mean. This time I take very thin brush and make sure to thin down Asurmen Blue at least 1:2. I see this stage as some sort of refreshing the initial wash.

That's it with the armor - now the rest of the mini :jaw:

I also tend to paint backpack and weapons separately.

P.S. I found that using a hair-dryer essentially speeds things up.

I did an article on how I paint my Wolves, I don't know if its the color you are looking for, but its there if you need it.

Part I

Part II

Have a look...

I love the baby blue and littlbitz's recipe is the one I (try to!) use.

They way I painted the BC packs:

1. Chaos black undercoat- spray or brush your choice but sparay is quicker and usually smoother if done from correct distance.

2. basecoat armour with 1:1:1 mix SW grey/Shadow grey/Kommando Khaki - ideally 2 thin coats needed possibly 3 I have a spare airbrush bottle with a large amount of this mix ready to keep it consistant. Another tip is to use a small 5ml syringe with markings so you can mix consistant batch after batch. Syringes can be picked up cheaply on ebay or elsewhere without needles.

3. shade armour, details, etc with thinned adeptus grey - if you want a more gritty look you could use devlun mud to add shade but again it will likely take a couple of coats

4. edge detail armour with pure SW grey

5. pick out details, armour joints, etc in chaos black

6. armour joints painted boltgun then washed with badab black

7. gold details - shining gold - wash devlun mud - highlight burnished gold

8. furs - scorched brown - pick out edges with vomit brown, followed by bleached bone, then white - wash with ogryn flesh then gryphone sepia

9. weapons - boltgun washed with BB, then edged with mithril silver.

10. chipping on the dred is done with adeptus grey followed by a thin line of SW grey on the lower edge only on any chips or scrathes you want to appear deeper or fresher.

Hope this helps...

A couple more of my older 'BB' wolves

The terminator is one of my early versions and is a slightly darker shade with more shadow grey in it.

asmodai650 - a very helpful guide, lots of tricks to be learned from it. Thanks for the link. http://masterdarksol.blogspot.com/2010/04/...ace-wolves.html

PJ1933 - pretty sure I am borrowing your scheme

CainTheHunter - Thanks for the step by step process.

The first addition to my army, five Wolf Scouts. They are currently under work and part of my pledge for this forum, along with ten Grey Hunters. The Scouts have been assembled, based, and primed. I will get pictures up to show me progress when I am a bit further ahead. Thanks again for everything.
