Scouts of DOOM!

A friend of mine is heading to a tourney next weekend, and he asked me to bring a spammy C:SM5 list to give his Eldar some practice against the type of Marine army that he is likely to see. So, I broke out what I had glued together (only 2 marines were painted as Consecrators, and my dread is almost done, anything else is either loose or merely assembled), and found that I could run:

3 vindicators

1 land raider

5 terminators (1 w/ heavy flamer)

1 libby terminator

1 MOTF w/ beamer

1 10 man tac squad w/ melta gun and lascannon and sgt w/ fist

1 land speeder w/ multimelta and heavy flamer

1 dread w/ lascannon and close combat weapon

1 landspeeder storm w/ multimelta

5 scouts w/ close combat weapons and sgt w/ fist

1 razorback w/ hvy bolter

The termies and libby were in the land raider. The fist/melta combat squad were in the razorback. The scouts were in the Storm. It all added up to 1850 pts.

He had 3 wave serpents filled with dire avengers and the fusion gun guys, 1 falcon with a unit of dire avengers and a farseer, 1 unit of warp spiders with an autarch, 2 vipers, and 2 fire prisms.

He split his forces in his two corners. I placed mine in one corner with the vindicators anchoring the edge, and the dread and landspeeder acting as speed bumps for my exposed flank. On a whim, I started the storm and scouts in space, waiting to deepstrike. In the first turn, I lost 1 vindicator and my landspeeder to only disabling one viper. Turn two saw my dread lose his lascannon and 1 vindicator lose its cannon, with his forces poised to overwhelm my exposed flank the next turn and his falcon safely parked with its back to the table edge about four inches from oblivion. Seeing that nothing was going right, I decided to roll the dice.

I got to bring my scouts in, and targetted the land speeder storm deep strike right on the tail of the falcon. I scattered 3 inched directly back. Bingo! One multimelta shot that involved a whole lot of 6s destroyed the falcon, killed most of the dire avengers, and wounded his farseer.

The next turn, it took every shot he had to wreck the land speeder storm, and there was noting in range to harm the scouts when they jumped from the wreckage. My turn came around, and the sgt fisted the farseer into a pulp, and the scouts killed the rest of the dire avengers.

He was so ticked about the scouts that he once again concentrated fire on them. They survived again (I made 14+ saves total for that squad), and the sgt with a shot from his bolt pistol, destroyed the viper.

Best of all, the performance of my scouts gave me time to suppot that flank with the razorback squad, while my remaining vindicator wiped out his warp spiders and autarch, my land raider destroyed two wave serpents and knocked the weapon off the 1st fire prism, and my MOTF and lascannon combat squad took out the other wave serpent and kept the unit that came out of the wave serpent running for cover. To add insult to injury, the combat squad in the razorback destroyed the 2nd dire avenge squad and the fusion gun guys.

Final result: crushing victory for the DA (too bad it was with a C:SM5 list, but I'm not going to quibble)... All thanks to one lucky 170 pt squad of scouts taking out close to 700 pts of Eldar. They all deserve promotion.

Thanks. I wasn't sure where to put this (given that I usually play RT and had to be cajoled into playing 5th edition to begin with and outright bribed to use C:SM5 instead of using C:DA4), but the success of the scouts was just too funny not to post. By the by, remind me to advocate harder for the LS Storm in the new DA Codex.
