Grey Wolves

Recommended Posts

Well how light/dark do you want them?

My personal style is a basecoat of adeptus battlegrey, wash with badab black, then overbrush with adeptus again. I'm no award winning painter, but it means I can fire out squads in an evening or two to a tabletop standard. I'll pop some pictures up tomorrow when it's light so you can see how mine come out.

I've got some WIP guys on my desk atm, so I'll pop them up as well.

That was an Adeptus Battlegrey basecoat, washed with Badab Black, dry-brushed Adeptus Battlegrey, then highlighted with Codex Grey and varying degrees of Skull White.

Overall, it sounds like Adeptus Battlegrey is what you want, but you might also want to take a gander at Privateer Press's paint line. They're very similar to the Foundation paints and I'm pretty sure they produce quite a few greys. Greatcoat Grey(P3), is quite a bit darker, whereas Ironhull Grey(P3) is very similar to Adeptus Battlegrey(GW).

Futhermore, if you're planning to use yellow, I'd also reccomend Privateer Press' paint line. You can check the available colours here.

The way I have done it is adeptus battlegrey base, then thinned coat of codex grey over the top, almost like a wash, avoiding the recesses. Then hit with badab black, highlight with fortress.

This creates a nice storm cloud grey colour.

I would suggest giving a couple of different schemes a try on test models til you find something you like.

I absolutely love P3's paints and use them almost exclusively over GW's. However, their yellow doesn't cover well at all, even when painted straight out of the pot. I don't know what GW's yellows are like, but the P3 yellow is one of the few I've been disappointed with.

Although, a layer or two of an orange before you paint on the yellow makes things much easier.

I went with a Adeptus Battlegrey, follow by Badab Black Wash, then highlight with Codex Grey, then highlight the tips of the armour with Fortress Grey.

Just I preffer darker colour. You can see photos of my army around these fourms.

As promised, here are some pics of my stuff. Apologies if the qualities a bit off, they're from my phone and I don't normally take a lot of pictures. I normally have a ceramic artist as a gf with a nice camera at my disposal, which is handy :).

First up is my WIP MoTW Grey Hunter. This is just a coat of Adeptus Battlegrey, with Badab Black Wash. This will give you an idea of how it will look.

Secondly, one of my finished GH from one of my squads. Now, when I painted this a few weeks back, I had forgotten my recipe and went for Battlegrey, drybrush Codex and then washed with Badab black. Tbh they don't look any different next to any of my other painted figures, as the shade of grey is the same. Basically, I don't really have the patience to do edge highlighting on armour, so I settle for drybrushing. It may make them look a little chalky, but when they're 2-3 foot away from your eyes on a table, they look good (well to me they do).

Lastly, one of my newest Wolf Guard Terminators. This was painted last year using the Adeptus, wash Badab and overbrush/drybrush Adeptus back over technique. The yellow is simply a coat of Iyanden Darksun with a coat of Gryphonne Sepia over the top. I just need to touch him up a bit more; taking that close up shot made a lot of things jump out at me :). I think the furs/pelts need a new coat and the gold needs working a bit I think. But anyway, these are my tabletop Wolves.

Once you get a rhythm, theyre easy to fire out. I really don't get on with painting, as I've never been particularly good and never have the patience, but discovering this technique was a life-saver. No more plastic-grey wolves for me!

Just goes to show you how much the Citadel washes help out those of us who don't know which end of a brush to hold ;).

I do a black prime, brushed on adeptus battle grey, quick shade dip, then codex grey highlights. I am liking it so far.

Which quick shade are you using? And could you toss out a picture?

This is a MotW test model, pre-highlighting, post dip. I am using the dark tone.
