Pre Heresy Style Space Wolves

Evening all.

After writing the space wolves blog for over a year and trying out all kinds of conversions, I've decided to start over with a more pre heresy themed army.

If you've read A Thousand Sons, you'll know that the Space Wolves are seriously ferocious. It's no wonder other space marine legions are terrified of them!

But most importantly, the Space Wolves make everything themselves and are fiercely independent.

So would their armour and weaponry really have changed that much since the heresy?

With Forgeworld's Badab War stuff coming out, I thought it might be a good idea to try a more 'old skool' approach to my new Space Wolves army. Judging by these photos, what do you think?

Personally, I can't wait to get started on some Wolf Guard Terminators with the big pre heresy style shoulder pads.

It seems a hobbyist's job is never finished :P You and Killswitch just want moar better!

I thought you wanted to churn out the Wolves and so avoided spending hours on them like your Tau. Perfectionism ~ it's in you :(

Your stuff is always good. Why are you asking? ;)

Grey is my preferred colour scheme for Wolves, so pre-Heresy is always attractive to me. What Great Company icon are you using or creating? 13th and the guy [???] from 'Wolf at the door?'

I am sure you know about The Great Crusade Forum, they have neat HH era ideas.

Khorne berserker helmets without the bunny ears, Maxmini steam knight helmets, Marauder bare heads, Dwarf - banners, shields and mini-shields [mini shields for the Terminator shield in front of the shoulder], Assault marine running legs and Berserker running legswould all help make your guys look 'not straight from the box'

As well as the Warrior furry shoulder and cape, you could use the High elf Lion head and fur cape and even the Delf Corsair Cape ~ Wolves have ferocious Dragons on Fenris too :(

And of course RG stuff for a cabal of Grey hunters to be the retinue of a Rune priest [which I have already shared] ~ perhaps the old Njal model?

You need to check when the Marks of Power armour came out, and then you could dodge using the later Marks, if you are keen for extra authenticity. I guess you could use Chaos stuff, as long as you shave off those evil Chaos bits.

You may have seen his stuff about the net: Mjolnir's blog

I think Mjol's stuff looks good too. ;)

I've been reading your blog for about a year now, great stuff!! Thank you for bringing some clarity to what you can do with this army. I, for one, appreciate it!!

The helmeted troops with the long beards are indeed great looking. kitbash (I am thinking, no), or something else??

Bullveye you mean. I thought I'd go with the classic Red wolf symbol. Decided to use the one from the 13th Company but without the moon or black background -hence my new userpic! The plan is for this logo to become the 'blog logo'.

The intention isn't really to do a Pre Heresy army. It's more what I would imagine the Space Wolves to be like based on the latest fiction (which ironically IS from the Heresy era). The Space Wolves Chapters makes its own armour and weapons. Why would they change for anyone?

Anyway, after the mardi gras feel of Ragnar's very colourful Great Company, I'm thinking of darker metals and a simpler scheme of greys and browns. Pack markings may be limited to facial tattoos or something similar. You can barely see their shoulder pads anyway.

However, unlike Killswitch, I won't be selling my current army until my new one is in a playable condition. After all, the blog would get boring without some battle reports ;)

That's not bad actually. I could use this for characters to make them stand out from the Grey Hunters.

I'll check this out. :D

I've pretty much decided how I'm doing the army already. Marks of armour don't really come into it:

Chaos Warrior torsos and cloaks for Grey Hunters, Long Fangs and Wolf Guard.

Chaos Marauder Horsemen heads, beastmen arms and weapons for the Blood Claws

Chaos Marauder Horsemen heads and arms for the Wolf Scouts

Mixture of the above for characters

100% plastic army

oh, and at some point I'll address plastic Thunderwolves...much as I think they're a silly idea.

His stuff is awesome. I was lucky enough to see some of it in person at Warhammer World around this time last year when there was a Horus Heresy campaign on.

However, I'll be going for more of a 'standardised' approach to my conversions. Not to mention that the whole army will have bare heads and no helmets.

Love them!!!..This is how I thought to make my GH..CW torsos + marine legs. Would you mind posting some photo os the joining process? I have some doubts about how fix these torsos and the marine legs in a stylish way....

Think your concept is some similar to mine. SW more fierce, savage and barbaric than the "official" ones...

In addition to my Rune priest and Grey hunters and Rhino/Razor with Raven guard stuff, reflecting the Norse valuing of ravens, I have another idea.

You can do the same with Salamanders stuff. Do the Priest and his Greys with the Delf corsair cloaks, as I have mentioned, but also with Sal bits for their transport.

This fits well with my preferred Engir Krakendoom Great Company idea.

I have seen some Wolves with spears from the Chaos fantasy range, and the look quite harpoonish. Spears were a common weapon amongst Vikings, being both cheap and effective.

Then Beastmen shields look suitably tribal.

Here are the Corsair cloaked Wolves I was talking about.

And then a comparo between a normally mounted back pack & the one with the cloak.

Interesting. I think they look more like Sallies, though.

That is always a possibility.... :P

If they are painted as per Wolves, you'd be surprised at how it ties things in. After all, Marines are nearly all the same models, yet they all look very different once painted up, even with Chapter specific goodies.

I was thinking it would work well with Engir Krakendoom's Great company, what with his fluff and heraldry being the Sea-Wolf. Give them marauder spears [maybe the orcy ones....] and you'd have a diverse GC. :)

Whilst the wolves are very specific to Asaheim, the islands would have much more exposure to marine life.
