I have purchased playground sand (50lb) because it comes in various granule sizes and will be gluing it to the board and then using modular terrain. It's very heavy and hopefully I can find a more permanent home where it won't have to move much. I haven't been able to purchase paint yet but will soon. I will paint it red because surprise surprise Blood Angels come from a red planet. So far I am into this @ $25.29.

My inspiration was not having to play on pink foam anymore, the dice bounce unfavorably and the suspense of a die bouncing for 20 seconds or more just to roll off the table is to much. B)

In my experience it's best to get a LOT of PVA glue, water it down a tad, and then cover large bits of the board at a time with it, followed swiftly by the sand. It's best to cover the area completely but leave a bit of glue on the edges of what you've added sand to so your brush (Should be a big wall-painting kind of a brush) doesn't get sand in it. When that's dry (Best to leave it a day or two) you need to knock the excess sand off, then coat it in PVA again: this forms a seal to stop any more of the sand falling off. Then Paint it red and add a drybrush in whatever colour you think is best - job done :D

EDIT: Sorry if I went over what the article said, forgot to check if it was a link ;)

There is also a paint (at least in Bunnings in Australia) called stone effects. You buy it premixed to the colour you want and there are several redish hues in it. Now I'm not certain it is water based but I will cheak it out this weekend and let you know. Test bottle (500ml) was $20. When I make my table this is what I will use.

I built a lage desert table years ago and after the sand and glue dried I painted it dark yellow, let it dry and then poured a burnt umber wash over it. Bloted the wash up with paper towel and then left it to dry. After that I used a lighter colour to dry brush everything and it looked great. To bad I didn't keep it. Oh well. Good luck with your table.

Good luck with the project, I just use tables and the Battle-mat!

Oh, and you should make the Broken-Glass fields of Barbistulon V (comestibles for whoever gets the reference).

That's from TSOALR I think. ;)

The link sadly didn't want to cooperate with me, but it looks like a good start.

I personally never really liked the idea of a textured board like the ones GW sells, with all the sand and gravel textures. I know you can add grass and stuff, but for some reason, having a mat with scenery on it seems more "wargamish" to me. I don't know...

Well I am doing just as was suggested above with the glue and the sand and as soon as the sand is to a level I agree with I will snap a picture of it before I paint it. I bought a can of paint but the "super" wal mart is out of stock so one is all they had on the shelf 3 miles long... ;) and there paint guy can't match a color with the auto color match computer so I had to pick a swatch that was close.

Played on the board last night prior to painting it. It held up pretty good, I was very paranoid about dragging anything across it at this time but I am overall happy with how it all turned out... I couldn't believe how much glue I had to go through to get all of that to stick.

I'm not happy with how the dice end up because although it's clear what they say and all some could argue cocked dice which I don't want anyone to make an issue of so I believe my next project will be a dice castle

I am thinking about adding that fibrous grass to the kitty litter areas but I am not sure if that will work with it being a red planet?
