This is a WIP but it's my first attempt at a plasma glow effect any thoughts or tips to improve this? I will say that the contrast in the pictures is higher than it appears to the naked eye in natural light - darn my photshop combat ability of 3  and as noted still a WIP but it gives an idea of the way I'm going withthis one.

I can tell you already washed the gold/bronze and perhaps it's the lighting from the flash/room, but it still seems really bright and clean.

I also feel like a banner would be essential... But that's just me really. Terrific grey!

I think it's just the reflection of the flash - metals are very tricky to photograph - as the gold is not that bright when viewed in natural light. The picture at the end of my 1st post is the one closest to showing how the gold finish loks in natural light. The banner is currently in undercoat only as I have not yet decided on a design but it will be added to the Dread. Nice to hear you like the grey I'm much happier with this colour than the 'baby blue' I was using on my earlier wolves.

Thanks nurglez feedback is always welcome, especially when trying a new technique.

Well, well, nice handiwork on the dread brother, really nice.

I especially like the reflection on the torso section, the gun itself is a little 'flat' though.

I would like to see more depth in the plasma, maybe some 'asurmen blue' in the recesses and towards the middle on top and the bright, glowing blue more restricted to the outer, upper curve of that plasma core thingy.

I hope you catch my meaning ;) .

And as you have blue plasma, my humble opinion is that the gemstones should be in another colour, like red or so.

I agree with Crazy Horse on a few points. The Plasma Cannon could do with a bit more heat distortion on the barrel/end portion. Love the blue plasma, I do the same on mine. A little bit of the Asurmen Blue wash in the recesses does wonders to bring out the whole thing. You could also think about brushing on a coat of gloss just on the plasma coils to make them pop. Does wonders to gems as well.

The bronze / gold parts look great. The only thing is they do no have any real battle dmg like the armour does. Maybe add a few dings n hits on the metalics? And maybe a highlight on the cutting edges of the claw?

All in all I love your model. Very nicely done.

Looks good bro! :tu: How did you do the battle damage? Love the gold. The one criticism I would make though is that the FW CCW arm looks weak. I had a spare CCW arm from the old Bjorn model that I used and it adds to the effect nicely. Its only base coated but I will try and get a pic up on my blog for you.

Thanks all for the kind comments

I see what you are saying on the plasma coils appearing a touch flat. I can't decide if it needs more white as an extreme highlight or more depth to the blue? So you think the outer coils should have a bit more blue towards the edges to pull the colour back and create more variation in the colour to the coils?

The gemstones are turquoise but I see your point on the highlights as I used space wolves grey - turquoise mix. I'm not sure about using red for the gems as the lenses are already red and I don't want too much red on points of interest. I could go to a green for the gems which will work with both the blue and the red.

When you say heat distortion are you talking about adding washes to give more colour to the metallic front/barrel area of the plasma cannon? Nice tip on the gloss will try that once it's finished and and varnished I often use gloss varnish on lenses and gems to pop them a bit. I've been wondering if I've quite got the balance of ice blue/white to darker recess on the plasma coils but I can't find a 'how to' or clear picture of a completed plasma cannon with the glow effect. I will be tweaking the effect to improve it some including blending the highlights around the cannon a touch more as they look very abrupt in the pictures.

Any ideas on how to add damage to the gold areas? I'll have to play around on some scrap to get something that works my guess is it should be brighter if a fresh mark but how to make it show up on the gold will be tricky. I have highlighted the cutting edge of the claw with mithril but it's very lightly done and won't show up from every angle I'm going to add a small amount of tamiya clear red 'gore' to the cutting edges of the CCW once painting is complete.

I'll be interested to see the Bjorn CCW arm...

The battle damage/chipping is a mix of sponging and brush work. I sponged on a 1:1 adeptus grey/chaos black mix and added a couple of the larger chips with a brush then lower edge of the damage that you want to stand out is done with thin line of thinned fortress grey.

Here are the pics mate. Sorry there not the best quality but I have just snapped them quick using my iPhone.

As you can see it is still very WIP but I feel it just look better than the FW CCW arm. Hope it gives you some food for thought.

Hope you don't hurt your neck out looking at the second pic...lol

Thanks for that :(

Looks very interesting and as you say much nastier looking than the FW version. The weapons on my dread have been magnatized so now all I have to do is find one...

I think that a little more blue in the recesses and on the lower part of the plasma coils should work wonders and put the white in more stark a contrast without any actual work there(meaning the already brighter parts).

In the end you should sure go with what suits you best brother.

Green seems like a nice alternative for the gems, love the idea.

Keep up the awesome work and keep us appraised.

Further update of the venerable dread. I've tried to soften the glow effect around the plasma coils while adding a bit more definition to the coils despite thinking of painting the gems green I decided to restrict the number of colours used and went with red for the gems to remove a clash with the blue of the plasma glow with the previous gems. Comments and criticism welcome ^_^

It's still a WIP the banner will be painted and fitted once I've come up with something suitable, obviously the basing still requires finishing and some of the detail painting needs to be finished too so I'll leave any more updates on this until I've completed it now.
