Long fang lonewolves

Hi!

I wanted a themed 40k army that would be a great challenge to play, but easy to paint. I wanted few models, and I wanted space marines. So...after weeks of research I came to the conclusion that I wanted to play Space Wolves. Now what about theme?

I wanted few models, so there had to be a lot of HQs, lone wolves, dreadnoughts and land raiders. Since I didn't want to play loganwing, I wanted to theme it up! All grey hunters are/will be longfangs (Without the heavy weapons), as will all the lone wolves and lords, simulationg the scenario of old, perhaps lonley wolves go to battle with terrible odds to face a certain death, and becoming heroes of legend.

Now what about colour scheme? I really HATE baby blue, so the ordinary space wolf colours were not an option. After looking through some artwork (A LOT) I decided to draw inspiration from theese:

This is the result i got on my first models, 2 lords in terminator armour:

Now I have 1 more Lord and 2 lone wolves to paint before I have to order my power armoured longfangs(Grey hunters). After that, I'll go for a venerable dread, a redeemer and perhaps a rune priest in termie armour, and that's it...the whole army right there in 18 models!

Hope you like it so far!

Thank you for the comments, it's nice to get some feedback on your painting B) .

The third picture is made by a guy called skor2d on deviant art! He makes a lot of warhammer and 40k artwork! He is really good at it, and makes some really inspiring artwork!

The basic colour of the armour is actually vallejo storm blue mixed with mithril silver untill its about as dark as chainmail. It makes them shimmer a bit IRL and the shimmer is...BABY BLUE! So they look grey, but the highlight created by light in the room makes them shimmer (VERY VERY discrete) blue. Plus, it's very easy to drybrush on, as it covers easily! So, they're still sky warriors, even though they look grey overall! I'm really pleased with the result!

I've painted the 3rd lord so he's half completed, I'll post pictures tomorrow!

The bases will be sand, painted black, overbrushed with bleached bone, and some grass- covered spots. I'll se how that looks, and post pics of it tomorrow!

New update!

I've painted my last lord! Now my 3 lords are ready...the last of my 4 (fluff) lords are already half dead, and will be in a venerable dreadnought! I've also done the bases!

2 Lonewolves to go before I'll order new models!

Here they are:

Ok, I'm totally in awe of your color scheme and a very rookie painter (and player for that matter). Can you break down your color scheme into steps for me?

You would have my undying gratitude.

^_^ Thank you! I'm glad that you guys seem to like my grandpa- marines!

The basic steps of painting the wolves in my colour scheme, it's really simple:

1. Prime Black

2. Mix Regal blue with mithril silver untill it's about as dark as chainmail. Drybrush the entire model with this!

3. For the fur, I basically use bestial brown as basecoat, wash with devlan mud, then mix bleached bone/skull white with bestial brown and drybrush it when dry.

4. Paint the parts you want red with red gore, highlight with bloodred and blazing orange.

5. Paint the parts you want white with bleached bone. Wash devlan mud when dry. Highlight bleached bone, then bleached bone/skull white

6. All gold is painted with shining gold, washed with devlan mud and highlighted with shining gold/mithril silver mix.

7. Paint details and face. The face is usually basecoated with a mix of dwarf flesh and red gore, highlighted with dwarf flesh, washed with ogryn flesh, highlighted again with a dwarf flesh/bleached bone mix, then a watered down wash of badab black on top.

That's about it...

I'll put up my armylist here aswell, so you can see the basic concept of the army. It's not competative at all, it's purely for fun and fluff! Do you think it will work for friendly games with friends? :P

Amazing work!

Don't forget, you can also have a Bjorn clone as a HQ choice if you want. A bit pricey but if you wanted loads of Dreads that's one way to go about it.

For friendly games your list is ok but a lot of points have been placed on solitary units, so you might find your forces overwhelmed by more numerable armies. But hey, you said your list was non-competitive and was based for fun so force numbers should't be an issue if everyone's having fun. :)

Alaitoc, your models look awesome. I love the color scheme!

Quick question:

2. Mix Regal blue with mithril silver untill it's about as dark as chainmail. Drybrush the entire model with this!

Since I am a painting retard, I need further instruction. Roughly what is the ratio of the mix, 50/50, 75/25 etc; ? And when you mean drybrush, you mean truly drybrushing, where the brush has dry paint on it?

Thanks in advance...

Thanks man! It warms my heart!

It's roughly 1 part regal blue and 5 parts mithril silver. I have it on a separate palette. I tried it on a model untill I was pleased with the result, then let the paint on the palette dry. Now, I just mix untill it reaches the same tone as the dired paint on the palette!

And drybrush - dip in paint, take a piece of toilet paper or cloth and wipe most of the paint off the brush with it. You should be able to paint a stroke on your finger without any noticable traces of paint showing. Then just brush, brush, brush and brush, untill you get an even, shaded coat on the model! So, it's not TRULY drybrushing, with DRY paint on the brush. It's just a VERY small amount of (still wet) paint left on the brush, small enough to make the brush feel like it's dry. That makes the paint hit all raised areas on the model, creating shades - if you basecoated black that is!

@ Alaitoc

Great minis! Clean and crisp. I really like the posing on the models, especially on the Lone Wolf.

And its nice to see someone from my hometown playing Space Wolves, here on the forums :P (I lived 10km east of Hbg)

Thank you! So, you're from here eh? That's cool! Always good to know that we northmen stay true to our ideals! Vikings in space is a perfect fit for us!

Thank you for posting that guide I am grateful. I printed it out to stash with my codex, I've always been a fan of viking legends and myth so the space wolves lured me in strong.

I'm a total newb but I would think your list is lacking in long range anti armor.

To be honest I'd switch the saga of the bear and the saga of the warrior born in that list, with the thunder hammer he's going to be swinging after a lot of things that have the chance to kill him and SotB will allow him to weather the storm.

Actually, my camera sucks...BUT! I've got a new iphone, which has a better camera in it!

I also finished my 2 lonewolves today, so I'll give you a couple of better pictures with some newly painted minis in them! How 'bout that? :(

First, my 2 lonewolves, ready to kick some ork butt!

Then, the whole angry grandpa- gang! Approx 800 pts in this picture!

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y129/Gorthor/bc0490dc.jpg

Now, I hope I'll have some money left after all the bills are paid, so I can order some more old men to join the battle!

Cheers!

Edit: In these pictures you can also see the small baby blue-ish shimmer on the models!

No, I actually don't sell models. I'm just too darn lazy for that! But I thank you for the comment! It really warmed inside!

I've paid the bills and ordered a wolfpack today! Not easy to be a firefighter-student, a father, fitness fan and have a really nice apartment at the same time! Have to buy a LOT of food as well!

The new recruits aka. "the angry old farts" will probably arrive in a day or two!
