Space Marine Battles: Battle of the Fang

Looking around I didn't see this mentioned, while browsing Black Library's website the other day I came across this. No image yet but it looks like we will be getting our own Space Marine Battles novel on the 1st Battle for the Fang come June. For those who don't want to click the link here's the text:

It is M32, a thousand years after the Horus Heresy. The Scouring is over and the Imperium at the height of its post-Crusade power. When Magnus the Red is tracked down to Gangava Prime, the Space Wolves hasten to engage the daemon primarch. Even as Great Wolf Harek Ironhelm closes on his ancient enemy, the Fang on the Space Wolves home world is besieged by a massive force of Thousand Sons. A desperate battle ensues as the skeleton forces of Wolf Lord Vaer Greylock attempt to hold back the attacking hosts before the last of his meagre defences gives in. Though a single Scout ship survives to summon Great Wolf Harek Ironhelm back to Fenris, none of the defenders truly realise the full scale the horror that awaits them, nor what the Battle for the Fang will cost them all.

So there you have it, just an FYI.

Never read anything by that author before but I'm certainly getting this book.

I shall have to read Iron company to see what he's like...

:HQ:

Hopefully he is a good author ~ I have not read his stuff before.

Has anyone read his stuff before?

Well I read Iron Company not that long ago and it was pretty good. Not excellent but solid and promising, certainly one of the better Fantasy books I've read, hopefully he'll do just as well in 40k.

Vash, have you read Helsreach - Voldorius & Rynns and what would you give them from a 10?

I'd rate Rynn's World a 7/10 or so and Helsreach and The Hunt for Voldorious I'd both rate around an 8/10. Voldorious might be more along the lines of a 9/10 but I found some of the fluff content and writing style a bit galling but overall they were all pretty good. Rynn's World had the most editorial errors of the series that I noticed and the weakest plot.

The 1st Battle for the Fang is a truly epic conflict though and by far the oldest the Space Marine Battles series has so far approached. All the other battles have been fairly recent, including the two upcoming which means the author will have a lot of consistency pot holes to fall in along the way. Not to mention some high standards to live up to in representing Bjorn the Fell Handed of the Space Wolves so my feelings are a bit mixed and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Perhaps after The Fall of Damnos and the Purging of Kadillus we will have a little better idea about the standards the series is holding its authors to, if any.

I just hope the author does his homework on this one.. material can be found in both Index astartes I (Old one's section has Bjorn's story defending the Fang), and the Space Wolves Codex 2nd edition. Looking forward to the rumored map!

Dan’s one of those authors that really puts The Fear in you – he just writes so well. I can’t wait to get my hands on the finished deal, not least to find out more about what he’s done to the Space Wolves before I inadvertently retcon it all…

that retcon comment scared me a little LOL just as long as the guy does a good job with few inconsistencies from the known fluff, i'm a happy wolf.

My most recent title for BL is Sword of Justice, which is much more on the scale of Fang. /plug

The research for this has come from IA and the old Codex, plus a few snippets from other GW/BL publications. The other major sources were A Thousand Sons and an advance copy of Prospero Burns. You'll have to decide for yourself whether the final product matches up to how you imagined it happening, but I will say that canon fidelity was very important to me, and every choice I made was given a lot of thought.

Seconded!

I have just finished reading Sword of Justice by Chris Wraight, and I have to say that it was excellent IMO. I really enjoyed it; the plot, the depth of the characters, and the rest of the shebang. If the author maintains these standards with The Battle of the Fang I have no doubt it will be one to read several times.
