Brother Caleb
I'm trying to get the right balance of gray/blue for my wolves armor. The section in "How to Paint Space Marines" gives me too much blue. I've been experimenting with the different shades, but without much luck. I'm going for mostly gray with a subtle touch of blue. I tried a base of Codex Grey with a light drybrush of Shadow Grey, but it came out blotchy. However, that my be due to my inexperience as a painter. Any suggestions? I would prefer not to mix any colors if possible. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/214704-shades-of-gw-grey/ Share on other sites
Mr. Danvers
Choosing not to mix paints is probably going to hamstring you quite severely unless you've got access to a larger selection of paints past GW, e.g. Vallejo/Humbrol/Tamiya etc. Isn't shadow grey darker than codex grey? I don't own Shadow Grey myself, but I'm pretty sure drybrushing a darker colour onto a lighter one might look a bit off. Off the top of my head, I could suggest using the Codex Grey, but shade it with a thinned Asurmen blue wash to give it a blue tint? I'm not a fan of the blue/grey wolves myself, but I've found that sometimes the citadel washes give you some nice effects and this might work. Godhead
With my wolves I like more of a blue, so I went with a pot of fenris grey and mixed it with a pot of astronomicon grey. If you wanted more grey.. could consider either 2 pots of the adeptus battle grey to one pot of fenris grey or 1 pot of fenris grey to on pot of astronomicon grey and one pot of adeptus battle grey. I like mixing whole pots simply because its an easy way to ensure you can duplicate mixes later on. Brother Caleb
I hadn't thought about mixing entire pots to ensure the ratio. I might try that. I have that wash, but my test coat went on too thick and blotchy. I'm sure that's also because of my inexperience. At least I'm on the right track.
