Collecting Sisters of Battle

Gents,

Considering rolling a Sisters army, but the GW store seems to be lacking in a few things - Rhinos anyone? I know theres the marine ones, but what about the special glass dome that the SoB rhinos have?

Whilst I'm at it (and this is an observation, not a generic GW pricing rant), this army is a pretty expensive one, isn't it? 33 points of minis for £10.50? What would people buy as a good opening force with £150 budget to start?

Cheers

Glad to see someone considering the Sisters, welcome! Being an old metal army, they're not cheap but you can make savings by shopping online and/or second hand. Second hand is a good method as you can normally get them cheaper and being metal they're much easier to strip than plastic. The Sisters don't technically have a Rhino for sale - buy the Immolator and you can assemble it as a Rhino and get lots of cool SoB icons and such all for the same price as a Rhino!

For a good start to a Sisters army, you should get a Canoness and a couple of squads worth of Sisters (including your choice of special weapons, likely melta/flamer) and a Rhino for them both. From there an Exorcist and some Seraphim and you can increase their numbers as you go. As a rule of thumb, you can't go wrong getting more standard Sisters and up to 3 Exorcists and having enough Seras for a 10 girl squad should sit you right.

It's pretty simple to get the core of a SoB army as almost everything boils down to "more Sisters" but once you've done that you can branch out depending on what you like/find works best for you such as more girls for foot slogging units or some Inquisitorial elements. Due to the cost it's not cheap so collecting slowly is a good idea, plus it gives you more time to put the attention to detail in they deserve :(

From the latest rumours, we're looking at a 2012 update... on the upside the new plastic models are probably going to blow us away. So if you decide to collect, taking that into account might be a good idea for your time scales. Have you considered a paint scheme/Order, or are you still feeling them out?

Under consideration, pale grey highlighted through to white being the colour scheme of the moment. Blue detailing and bone robes. Need to see how it matches the snow basing I use - needs contrast.

Even though I've owned the codex from day of release, never actually got around to doing anything. So........one unit of ten and one of 9 sisters (5 blisters) inc 4 special weapons, Canoness, pair of Rhinos and an Immolator to start?

I've got a priest knocking around somewhere indoors, god knows where though as I searched through the boxes of stuff looking in vain. Inquisitors retinue is already there from my Daemonhunters force. He can go into the unit of 9. Think he may be converted to Mordheim, but no major job to convert back.

Welcome to the Sisterhood, loveliest ladies around.

Like WarriorFish said, the more sisters you can get the better off you will be. I have always ran a pure sister mech force or at times, a combined SoB/GK army but that was a while ago, pre-Wolves I think. I am not sure I would be able to pull that off anymore with all the leafblower lists and Long Fangs running around. Thankfully, the designers of the book allowed the Sisters to be malleable in this regard and run large groups. Personally, I would go with 15. Gives some "cushion" wounds, gives you effectively "rending" bolters every time you test for faith and costs right around the same as you would mechanized but without the killpoints. Special weapons are a must, particularly the Heavy Flamers and Meltas. I would suggest shopping around on Ebay as that seems like the most cost effective way to build a new army as you can convert the weapons fairly easily. Don't skimp out on the cannoness though, you can make her look "Hot!" and deserves all your love and attention.

However, if you're dead set on Rhinos, you can either buy the Immolator box or if you have regular SM ones, order the extra bits from places like Battlewagon Bits (aka the WarStore). Empire Flagellant bits work well too depending on how in need of redemption your sisters are. Also, final word: Do invest in Exorcists. Opponents fear them and rightly so. Easy to convert w/ the Whirlwind bits or just ordering the model from online.

Once again, welcome.

Colour scheme sounds good, I think it'll work - don't forget to show us when you've painted a model up! :P

Don't forget that the normal Rhino is perfectly fine and Sisters can use it no problem even without icons and other paraphernalia so you can use them if you prefer. This topic in the PCA has some excellent examples of how a little effort can make them pop.

Keep in mind the minimum size unit for regular Battle Sisters is 10. A unit of 9 normal Troops is impossible unless you're going with ISTs. ;)

Having started a Sister's army (mainly from stripping the models I already had and the boxes I aquired about 3 years ago) I have to agree with buying second hand, the problem whoever with ebay and quite a few people on forums (not all of them though) are using the old "OOP" crap to drive the price up on the mini's. On top of that, the sister superior miniatures that were sold only in blisters are becoming harder and harder to find now.

As for Rhinos and Exorsists, use SM Rhino's and Whirlwinds. Also I think the Forgeworld Exorcist is cheaper than the GW one.

Those 10 women squad boxes are still floating around, and would save you a ton of money. Also I can absolutely recommend buying second hand.

There may be a few floating around on Ebay or the like but you can't them from GW anymore as they don't package them like that anymore. Its 3 girl blisters, individual special & heavy weapons, and superiors now. GW seems like they are killing the army slowly.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cannoness, 2 Sisters squads (10 each), 2 Immo's (don't glue the turret on so you can swap immo/rhino easy), Exorcist.

Puts you at 500 points without any gear and is the core of any Sisters of Battle force.

Meltagun and heavy flamer Sisters are good too. I still proxy storm bolters as meltas and flames as heavy flames because the used models sell for the same price as new.

I still really need to buy a second Exorcist. Most effective model on the field.
