A 7 day log - 'The Iron Flight' Marines.

It's been a long, long while since I posted anything on here, so I figure I may as well come back with something interesting. This coming Sunday, in 5 days time, is a 1,500 point 40k tournament. As I'm a backup player in case anyone drops out, I figured I should have a suitable army. Instead of using one of my current armies, I finally got around to starting a new one, specifically a Blood Angels all-jump list.

Instead of going for actual Blood Angels, I decided to come up with a new chapter purely so I could use the various pieces I have, namely 3 Iron Hands upgrade kits. Eventually the name 'Iron Flight' popped up considering it's basically an Iron Hands flying army, and not long later I had a reasonably workable list, 43 jump packs strong with no vehicles.

The log is 7 days purely as I started building 42 marines last night around 11pm, and managed to finish around 11am this morning. Naturally there were several breaks and what not, but it did seriously press home how annoying mold lines can be. As of this morning, I am at this stage -

Of all the marines pictures, only 3 do not have some form of bionics. It was actually quite surprising how far those little upgrade kits can stretch if you limit just 1 bionic part per marine.

This leaves me 5 days not including today to base and paint the army in full, factoring in there's still an Apothecary for a command squad and several melta weapons to arrive in the next day or so.

A couple of close-ups of the Sanguinary Priest and 2 Librarians -

With any luck by this afternoon my thumbs won't feel so cramped, as using a craft knife to remove mold lines on that many marines at once is a tad painful in the long run. Here's hoping the weather improves too, as priming whilst bleak outside doesn't bode well.

The overall aim of this log then is to see if it's possible to get a nicely painted 1,500 point Marine 40k army done in several days. Here's hoping it works.

Cheers for the compliments and encouragement everyone. Though the weather today was damp and bleak, I managed to get some priming done in the garage without it frosting. A short nap later as I was sufficiently awake enough to base everything adeptus battlegrey -

I also decided to paint up a standard marine to get an idea for the scheme. The first picture has very strong flash, and so the colours are brighter than they appear normally. The second picture is much closer to how the marine actually looks.

So 1 down, 42 to go. I probablky won't get much, if any, painting done tomorrow as I'll be out all day, but with any luck I'll get a game or two in with the army to see how it does.

Kewl! But the eye lenses are a bit too bright in my opinion, it looks less like lit-up blue and more like a flashbang grenade went off inside his helm :P maybe a couple of layers of blue glaze could fix that? Your choice :) Other than that, I like the grey and the battle damage and I'm as always a huge fan of bionics

Aha, some form of update. Cheers for the comments guys. It's also good to see you again Firestorm40k, I remember seeing your Taurus army progressing the same time I was still doing Penitent Spectres. How's your army doing?

Unfortunately painting has been slow today so far, so I've a bit of catching up to do before I take a break. I did however finish up 4 more normal marines and a librarian.

Here's a few closer shots of the actual Librarian -

6 down, 37 to go. With any luck I'll get another 10 close to finishing, meaning I can spend all day tomorrow burning through them.

Cheers everyone. Should I get everything done in time, which seems likely now, I'll also be adding extra highlights to the 3 characters, refining the sword, etc.

The eyes are very simple. 50/50 of the foundation blue and white, thinned and painted over the entire lens and the lower edge of the helmet underneath the lens. Then it's a highlight of 25/75 blue/white on the lens only, then just white on the lens only. Pretty quick thankfully.

Here's another update - after painting for around the past 9 or 10 hours I've decided to take a break as it's quarter past 4 in the morning. However, in that time I did manage to almost finish another 20, which is much better than my last set of only 5. All I have left to do are the purity seals, 3 unhelmeted heads and eye lenses.

Certainly getting there, as I'm practically at 26 out of 43 done, leaving a happy 17 to go. In other good news, the GW order arrived yesterday, so my last apothecary for an Honour Guard squad is put together, and I have the remaining meltaguns. Just need to base and prime the apoth and I'm good to go.

Yep, that's the upgrade pack I mean. Comes with 2 sets of legs, 2 chests, 2 sets of arms and 4 heads. Enough for 12 marines if you limit to one bionic per.

It's currently 6.20-ish am on the day of the tournament and I'm practically done! Another painting slog of 11 hours, but all that's left are 3 separate melta guns which the primer is still drying on.

That's the full army - 2 Librarians each with a jump pack and an honor guard squad with 3 meltas and 2 flamers all with jump packs, plus 3 units of 10 assault marines with infernus pistol, powerfist and 2 meltas per squad. Rounding the points off is a Sanguinary Priest with jump pack and infernus pistol. As I'm currently feeling a tad wrecked, and the tournament is in about 3 hours, I'll be taking a good break for now. Final army shots will be up in the evening. I'm fully aware the little details aren't anywhere as neat as they could be, but it's a great feeling to get an army done essentially in 3 days of painting.

Well done on completeing your army to your dead-line Xanthier! :)

And yes, I'm still working on the Legion of Taurus, though I haven't updated my log in a few weeks as I'm still painting some Khorne Berzerkers. They're a while off being done yet, too...

It's been a long, long while eh? Since these guys are up for going to a new home on Warseer, I finally got around to taking pictures!

I'm still pretty pleased with how they turned out, and it's certainly helped me prepare for the next army I'm doing which are also nicely gray - Carcharodons!
