The Silent
Gee, it's been ages since I made anything in power armour.... Nice to see everything is still shipshape around here! First, a little bit of history: A couple of years ago, I decided to try and build a 3D Space Hulk terrain set. Work on this was and is slow and often grinds to a standstill. I need lots of time and room to work on the terrain section, and real life is extremely stingy with those commodities. Why does it take so long? Because this is the level of quality I'm working at: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/Modhail/WIP/Space%20Hulk%203D/HPIM2940.jpg All handbuilt from scratch, each corridor section is unique and very detailed. (That is all that is finished at the moment, by the way.) But what does that have to do with Howling Griffons, you ask? Well, a Space Hulk needs Marines to cleanse it! Originally I had planned to go with a DIY chapter for that. (I believe pics and background are still somewhere around here, in the deep recesses of threads past) Somewhere this summer, I was digging through my Space Hulk stuff again and changed my mind: I want Howling Griffons to cleanse this Hulk! Their striking, fairly bright, heraldry would contrast nicely with my dark corridors. I also discovered that, in my 4th and 5th ed starter boxes, I had enough marines to start a smallish army, I might as well incorporate the Terminators I'd need for Space Hulk into that army.... So I started building stuff... The first few Terminators being built, back in august: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/Modhail/WIP/Space%20Hulk%203D/HPIM3338.jpg Having seen the 3rd Ed Space Hulk Terminators, I wanted to have my Chapter's best to also be decked in bling. So I set about making decorations and heraldry specific to the Howling Griffon Chapter: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/Modhail/WIP/Space%20Hulk%203D/HPIM3347.jpg Which also found it's way onto my starter box marines: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/Modhail/WIP/Howling%20Griffons/HPIM3358.jpg And why am I telling you all this? Because the first half of that squad is finally, after 2 months without hobby time, fully painted: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/Modhail/WIP/Howling%20Griffons/HPIM3432.jpg I couldn't take pics under proper light, so you'll have to make due with a "mood shot" under artificial light. The painting on them isn't to my best standard. It's just a serviceable tabletop paintjob, so I can get things done fairly quickly. (Note that the term "quickly" is very loosely used here...) Plus I used these to experiment a bit with different recipes for red and yellow, so they all have a few more layers of paint on them than necessary. I didn't think it worth effort to strip them if something didn't work out, I just painted over.... I intend to lavish more time and effort on the Terminators. S. Bloodhowl
Awesome work man, really loving it. One problem which strikes me though is one of the terminators: would a Cyclone Missile Launcher be, well... suicidal in a space hulk? Octavulg
Space Hulk had rules for CMLs in one of its editions. Those Howling Griffons look awesome, man. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/215280-space-heroes-from-planet-battenberg/#findComment-2565189 Share on other sites
LordOrdGermany
absolutely super. especially the as-realistic-as-possible picture inside your space hulk :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/215280-space-heroes-from-planet-battenberg/#findComment-2565505 Share on other sites
The Silent
Wow, thanks guys! :P About the Terminators: Those are only just the first few I started building. My plan is to have at least 2 models of each weapon upgrade, plus enough regular termies to field at least 2 6-man "tactical" squads in almost any configuration possible. Plus 2 close combat squads: one with TH/SS and one with Lightning claws. The first edition of Space Hulk had rules for every weapon available to Terminators in regular 40K. They also had rules to build your own Terminator squads on a points buy system. You could even outbid each other, trying to accomplish missions with the least points! I want to be able to use those rules, and also have the option to play a modified Kill Team game in the Hulk. In those cases, the extra weapon options come in handy. And for the record, I don't believe using Cyclone missile launchers in a Hulk is any more suicidal than entering the Hulk in first place... :) Shortsonfire79, these are actually the same pictures I have on AB, all linked from my Photobucket. It's just that B&C resizes them a bit... And there are just a bit more of them on the AB. Lord Of Germany, that picture was actually taken with no more than the normal ceiling light in the room and a little LED-torch I held next to the camera... The trick is to make several pics, experiment with stuff on each pic, and just select the best one in the end. I've also got one with the LED-torch from the side and a piece of red acetate in front of the camera: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h213/Modhail/WIP/Howling%20Griffons/HPIM3434.jpg I like the mood of it, but it doesn't show off the Howling Griffons' colours very well...
