I use Krylon Flat White to primer, and the washes do OK on that (for faces I just put Ogryn Flesh over the primer itself). But for some reason I've got it in my head that the washes will not like the satin of glossy finishes. I used the Badab Black wash like you suggested and they turned out exactly like I wanted them too.
