Solid SW HQ

Rune Priest, with a Chooser of the Slain, murderous hurricane, and living lightning.

He provides able psychic defense, as well uses his psychic powers to confuse and harry your opponents mobility.

Living Lightning is a power for blowing up transports. Murderous Hurricane is to to be targetted on then enemy as it closes in on you - it does light damage, but the big thing it does is it forces the target to to assault from difficult and dangerous.

The Chooser is to be placed in an area to get LOS of everything so you can cast your powers with BS5.

Costs 110 points.

edit: Seems I had some wierd ideas on how the Chooser worked...

I second the rune priest, as having a 4+ chance to stop any psychic ability cast within 24inches is priceless, and living lighting and murderous hurricane are 2 great spells that I use, Jaws of the world wolf is nice but some people cry cheese, and I love casting MH on my opponents daemon prince then watch him slowly walk to me and strike last in combat :D

I haven't used a wolf lord since my first game, and don't use wolf priests, but I can see the usefulness of a wolf priest ;)

Rune Priests are generally the most flexabile charcter to have lead an army. Very capable at long range combat, good powers and defense means that he is pretty able to adapt to most situations, and while his close combat ability is subpar when compared to Wolf Priests and Wolf Lords/battle brothers, it still manages to be good enough that he's not a complete waste in that area and manages to deal addtional damage to demons, not to mention being capable of instant killing if the situation arises.

Wolf Priests are alright, but their roles tend to be extremely specialised and linked to the effectiveness of the unit it is attached to. It could be a decent upgrade for a close combat Grey Hunter squad, but often the extra expense is not worth it when compared to rune priest, though Skyclaws like the assist now and again.

Wolf Lords can be quite powerful, but they don't do that well in general space wolves except when mounted on thunderwolf/bikes where the extra speed attached to smaller, elite units that are used to smash units to pieces. A wolf lord is quite capable of killing alot things by himself or supported, getting him there is the main problem.

While other choices, such as combat equipped lords/battle leaders and rune priests with CoS are also solid, I would vote wolf priest first up - cheapest IC with an invunerable save, a nice combination of weapons and options and with a pack behind him a formidable battle field presence - you could also give him a bike or jump pack and he still costs less than a comparable battle leader while granting fearless and prefered enemy to his pack - a real asset to start out with, and really characterful to boot.

I will add the note that it depends where you see the army going... a rune priest might be argued just as well, or a well equippped lord (e.g. TH/SS) but I think the 4++ save, cheap points cost and fearless are the seperating factors in the wolf priest better fitting the bill as the more 'solid' HQ.

The rune priest is going to be the best starter choice. He provides psychic defense. His psychic abilities are pretty straightforward so there are no surprises there. He is fairly cheap for one of our characters, starting at 100pt and comes with a force weapon.

If you are looking for more diversity as your progress in your game, I would recommend either the wolf lord on thunderwolf mount or the wolf guard battle leader on thunderwolf. These are fun characters that are really worthwhile to play with and provide a ton of hitting power.

You are talking about Rune Priests, Wolf Priests are the ones that bestow preferred and fearless on the pack he's in.

Sorry. Fixed it. Mind was elsewhere.

A rune priest is the best basic hq in the game. Yesterday my rune priests jotww a trygon and carnifex aswell as using his force weapon to instant kill a reaver. Living lightning help whittle down all of the horde bugs, and the chooser of the slain kept my long fangs in the games for a few more rounds. Not bad for 110 points.

Every game i play a rune priest in he does well.
