The Destroyers, the White Scars successor

I have reached a point where I decided to reword the text because I had a lot of words (cca 5900) but I felt that do not need all that to tell you about my chapter. So I went with a minimalistic approach (2200 words). My question to those bold among you that will read the article is.

Did you managed to understand everything I was trying to say and where in your opinion if anywhere should I expand it.

The moon of Myesec orbits Nova Zemlya in the Obzor system. Situated in the west of the Ultima Segmentum in the gap between the spiral arms it is the linchpin of the Imperial defences in the region as it sits on the edge of space crawling with Ork pirates and infested by their empires. It is a system of four worlds, a single terrestrial planet named Nova Zemlya and three gaseous giants. Nova Zemlya was colonised early during the great crusade and over the years developed into a hive world crucial in providing manpower and material for the Imperial Guard. The planet is orbited by three habitable moons and the largest of these, Myesec was claimed by the Destroyers as their home world.

During the Horus Heresy the moon was a sight of battle between the White Scars and Iron Warriors who had constructed a keep there. The loyalists led by sergeant Godemyr were victorious, capturing valuable supplies that proved useful later in the war. Once he had been given command of the Destroyers Godemyr returned to the site of his victory and claimed the Iron Warriors keep for the Chapter. Since that time the keep had been greatly expanded and turned into a fortress-monastery. For the matter of fact the entire moon was extensively built upon. Miles upon miles of forges, manufacturing halls and assembly yards have been added around the main superstructure covering much of the satellites surface. The production output of Myesec can almost match that of the smallest Forge Worlds. The glow of its foundries can be seen in the night sky contrasting the coal black surface of the moon.

This is not the only base belonging to the Chapter. Inside the main spire of Nova Zemlya a fort was constructed, capable of housing an entire company and provided with all the instruments to turn fresh aspirants into battle brothers. Beyond are other bases scattered on moons orbiting the gaseous giants and elsewhere in the sector. Each of these is stoically defended by the Chapter’s Housekarls and occasionally by an odd squad of Marines. Though strictly not the possession of the Destroyers two mighty dockyards of the Imperial Navy orbiting the other two moons of Nova Zemlya are almost exclusively used by the Chapter dominated system defence monitor force.

The Destroyers do not have a preferred recruiting world though most aspirants come from the hive gangs of Nova Zemlya. So it is not uncommon to have squads with each Marine hailing from a different world. These worlds do not even have to be close to Myesec or each other as Chapter’s Captains have full liberty to pick up recruits, where ever suitable candidates may be found. During the Age of Apostasy when the Strike Forces of the Destroyers were unable to return to Myesec for over a century Marines were recruited, fought and died for the Chapter without ever setting foot in their fortress-monastery.

Combat Doctrine

The warriors of the Chapter follow standard Space Marine tactical and strategic dogma and have often been lauded as an outstanding example of Codex battle doctrine. All ranks are able to make tactical decisions and are encouraged to act on initiative. The Chapter combines all arms approach in flexible balanced battle groups. Each of which can present an opponent with a diversity of threats before pressing their attack so swiftly that the foe is overwhelmed before he can react. But it is when emulating the teachings of their long lost Primarch that the Destroyers are at their deadliest.

The history of the Chapter is littered with reports of bloody excesses upon the field of battle and beyond it. Savageries committed that left other Imperial observers shocked and disgusted. Though such behaviour has been noted among the White Scars and other original successors of the fifth Legion, the Destroyers are the most often perpetrators of such deeds. What separates the Destroyers from the rest of their kin is that it seems that their savagery is not inherited but rather taught. It has also been noted that the Chapter often employs excessive force in terms of armour and support not usually available to other Space Marine Chapters.

Imperial Guard commanders have often cursed the Destroyers for their “thorough” elimination of the enemies. Previously solid defensive positions that could have been used by the Guard upon capture are usually devastated beyond use by the Marines. Such tactics cause little concern when invading an alien world but when employed upon an Imperial planet, they rarely leave no response.

Organisation

The Destroyers are a strict Codex Chapter their roster matching that of the Crimsons Fists or the Black Consuls in all but names for certain ranks. In accordance to their traditions when a warrior obtains captaincy he is given an honorary title of Khan, while the Chapter Master takes the title of the Great Khan. Following in the footsteps of the fifth Legion the Chapter’s companies are known as brotherhoods. What sets them apart from other Chapters is the number of supporting ranks within the Chapter. The number of Techmarines greatly exceeds that found elsewhere which is not surprising considering the size of the Chapter’s forge and the number of vehicles they need to take care of. The Apothecarion has an equally numerous complement of Marines which is necessary to cover all the scattered fighting formations and maintain a close watch over the huge number of aspirants kept in the scout company, that are needed to keep the Chapter’s numbers, for the casualty rates are high as the Destroyers are among the most active Chapters in the Imperium. Accordingly due to the methods employed in gathering new aspirants the number of Librarians within the Chapter is also above average. No small part in that matter is played by the habits of the Destroyers that keep most of the Librarians of the field of battle decreasing their mortality rate in comparison to other brethren while the inception rate is the same.

Though it is not uncommon to find armed Chapter serfs among the Adeptus Astartes Chapters, especially on their battleships, the Destroyers have taken that to an entire new level. Due to the high number of supplicants that are needed to maintain the number of aspirants it is natural that the number of those that fail the tests to become the Space Marines is great. Those that fail will become Chapter serfs and the best among them will become Housekarls, the armed retainers of the Destroyers. They will be given best training and equipment imaginable to a normal human and entrusted with the protection of the Chapter’s assets. In many ways they mimic the Storm Troopers of the Imperial Guard and are sometimes sent to deal with lesser foes when the Chapter’s forces are occupied elsewhere. Though the Housekarls do not break the word of the Codex Astartes they sure go against its spirit. This has led some Chapters to view the Destroyers with mistrust and caused several Inquisitorial investigations that have to date failed to find any fault with the Chapter.

Beliefs

The Destroyers are strict followers of the Imperial Truth as has been preached during the Great Crusade and passed onto them by their predecessors. They are champions of logic and reason in a galaxy descending into madness. The notion that they cannot spread that truth makes them bitter and angry. These are the emotions they vent so ferociously on the enemies of the Emperor. Religious belief and blind faith are anathema to them, a sign of weakness and no matter how much it pains them to watch that they themselves have also become a symbol of faith they bide their time drowning their disappointment in the rest of humanity in the blood of their foes. With eagerness they await the day when the Emperor will return and they will be set free from the shackles created by the Ecclesiarchy. As it is the Destroyers lack any religious overtones and the only chapel they maintain is the one used by their guests and visitors. The Chaplains of the Chapter teach that the Emperor is their creator and Jaghatai Khan the source of their gene-seed. No prayers are offered to them, no ceremonies held in their honour. Their existence is remembered as are their deeds. They were great men of a lost age, an age the Destroyers wait to return.

The warriors of the Chapter are certain in the ultimate unification of humanity and its supremacy over all other alien species no matter their origin or apparent power. The Space Marines are well known for their xenocidal campaigns but there are few if any that can match the number of such purges conducted by the Destroyers. Matching their stance to the xeno is the Chapter’s view of what makes humanity. It is a very narrow view excluding many strains of mankind that have developed over the millennia. In the past there have been instances that the Destroyers culled the populations of such worlds but to date the Chapter has been able to justify their actions.

For all their ferocity the Destroyers have a more civilised side. They are firm believers that Space Marines are more than just weapons in the hands of humanity. It is taught by the Chapter’s Chaplains that to be a good Space Marine an individual must also be a complete person. This is emphasised in the schooling methods provided to aspirants and by later encouraging battle brothers to pursue their fields of interest in what little free time they have. Most will expand their studies with subjects that in one way or another involve war, but some will develop their skills in writing, poetry, sculpting or painting while others might become orators, tutors, singers or actors. Acting is especially respected among the brethren for they enjoy an occasional depiction of epic deeds from the Chapter’s past. The time other Chapters usually spend on prayers the Destroyers use to further their own education, for what good is a guardian if he doesn’t understand the value of that which he is guarding. Those familiar with this face of the Chapter are further disturbed by their actions on the battlefield, for what kind of people this men must be to be able to do such things fully comprehending what they do.

Geneseed

The gene-seed of the Destroyers appeared stable and initially displayed no aberrations or mutations. However, with the passing of centuries and an extremely high mortality and recruitment rates some peculiar effects have emerged. The mutation of the Biscopea gland is responsible for the heightened aggression and hyperactivity exhibited by Chapter’s brethren. Some suggest that this might be the reason for their violent excesses and need to completely obliterate their foe. Little do they understand how mistaken they are.

Chapter Motto

“We are who we must be! We do what must be done!”

I really liked it, its short but thats kind of a good thing.

One Question: Is this an official color scheme? It reminds my of the dark angels, but if the Green is slightly different it would be ok.

The acting part seemed off, but i think this is what you wanted to go for.

There is no official colour scheme. This is a close as I could get to the colour combination I am getting - Orhide Shade with Thraka Green wash.

I might have not worded that correctly. What I had in mind is sort of epic recitals with some acting thrown in. Something akin to old greek tragedies.

I am glad you liked it.

First let me say that I really don't like the new painter, makes things too dark.

The long and glorious history of the Destroyers stretches to the very birth of the Imperium. It was a time of turmoil and the Emperor’s realm was reeling from the devastation caused by the Horus Heresy. From its horrors emerged a new Imperium and with it a new order of things. So, according to the Codex Astartes the huge Space Marine Legions were broken down into smaller units called Chapters.

Imperium was built along time before the Heresy as I recall.

"a new order." sounds better I think.

I think you can drop the "So" here.

Taking the moon of Myesec as their new home world the Destroyers set upon the task they were created for.

"Taking the moon of Myesec as their new home world, the Destroyers set upon the task they were created for." I think its better with the comma.

And you say my Chapters are 'violent'

Another, and I've seen many in the IA that can use a comma.

***********************

Overall a really nice IA.

Imperium was built along time before the Heresy as I recall.

Actually, the Age of the Imperium, and the Imperium itself, are a by-product of the Heresy. As quoted from the Space Marine Codex:

"Though the invaders circled like vultures, the Space Marines and their Primarchs stood firm. Darkness looked sure to overwhelm them at every turn, but not one amongst them took a backwards step. So began the Age of the Imperium."

C:SM 5th Ed. Page 7, Paragraph 5, lines 5 through 7.

Basically, when the Emperor was around and ruling things, it was called something else, probably an Empire, led exclusively by a single man. The Imperium is the name of the star-spanning bureaucracy. So it is fair to say that if his Destroyers are Second Founding, their origins lie in the birth of the Imperium, the Horus Heresy.

The Imperium was founded by the Emperor, also called "The Immortal Emperor", "God-Emperor", and the "Master of Mankind", at the end of the Age of Strife - a very long period of anarchy, war, and destructive regression which brought humanity to the brink of destruction and reversed the technological progression made in the Dark Age of Technology.

The Age of the Imperium officially began with the Emperor's conquest of Terra, but in the view of many, truly began with the Great Crusade.

M30 - Fall of the Eldar, and birth of Slaanesh. The Ages of Strife ends and Age of the Imperium begins. Creation of the Space Marine Legions.

M31 - Great Crusade begins, and ends after 200 years of conquest because of the Horus Heresy. Also includes the Great Scouring and the Age of Imperium begins.

Actually before the Heresy, by a thousand years

  • 1 year later...

I know I am bringing back an old thread but it is someones IA, so bite me!

I think the destroyers are cool, I think you need to add in a few tales of their destructive ways. I like how they destroy bases to the point that no one can use them, eventhough the Imperial Armies perhaps could have used them! I think you should include some examples of how their destructive ways pissed off other factions in tale or story format.

Thanks on the comment. I am not sure if I can do that, I can write pretty good(IMO) short stories, descriptive articles and histories (that also being part of my job :P ) but I can't write a good conversation for a life of it.

Cheers

Well, if you posted a draft conversation here, we could help you along. That's kind of what we're here for ;)

Why the use of the "male", and or "fire" symbol for there chapter icon. I'm not sure about the use of that symbol to reflects the common group icon of the chapter where it serves as their heraldry. Where did the Destroyers make use of this symbol to represent the chapter? Other then it commonly used as a squad marking for heavy support. It would be nice knowledge to know as a reader there adaptation of "your symbol" and how they came to use it as there way to signal out a member or there order.

P.S I do realise the Heavy support choice marking is an upside down "V" but its to simular to ask about.

That is the greek Delta

I am not sure if I understood your questions. As far as GW is concerned Destroyers are just a name to them, everything else is my creation so in no way is it official or supported by any official information.
