Are you leaning towards any of the following:

1. Death Company Army

2. Sanguinary Guard Army

3. Assault Marine Army

4. Traditional codex Army

5. Dreadnought Army

6. Mechanized Army

Units to consider regardless:

*Furioso dreadnought with blood talons: It will mulch his squads of guants and boys but be wary of power klaw nobs leading the squads

*Vindicator: pie plate that will kill nearly anything it hits. Not effective against monstrous creatures

*Multi-melta attack bikes: Good anit-tank platforms effective against armor and monstrous creatures

*Terminators w/ Thunder hammer/Storm shield: This squad will seriously damage anything it touches, especially monstrous creatures

*Flame weapons in any form

Popular units:

*Furioso with blood talons

*Multi-melta Attack bike squadron

*RAS (10 man): Power fist, 2 melta guns

*Tactical Squad (10 man): power fist, flamer, lascannon, rhino

*RAS (5 or 6 man): power weapon/fist, melta, razorback

*Mephiston

*Baal predator w/ Twin-linked assault cannon and heavy bolters

*Predator destructor with sponson las cannons

Well, for a start, you'll probably want a Space marine battleforce, just to start off your army. Devastators are next in line. Combine the Devastators and the combat squad from the Battleforce to beef up the Devastators. The devastators should have their arms Magnetised, and should either carry Missle Launchers or Heavy bolters, or a mix of both.

Sanguinary guard would be a good buy as well, giving you jump-pack troopers that can kill tanks at close range. I would also suggest another Tactical squad, to give you a firebase on the army. The Baal Predator will help, seeing as you can arm it with a Twin linked Assault Cannon and two Heavy Flamer Sponsons. Great for taking out hordes.

Take the Sanguinor to take out their HQ choices, I know Ghazkull and the Swarmlord can get a little frustrating. Get a five man Terminator squad, and put them in a Land Raider, because you can deep strike the land raider into gaps created by the enemy moving forward, encircling them. Against Horde armies, make sure that you use the Land Raider Crusader/ Redeemer, they have lots of Flamers and Bolters. All Vehicles should have Hunter-Killer Missles on them, to launch at HQ units or Targets of Opportunity. It may not seem like much, but running a mechanised force you are able to get a lot of extra rockets into the enemy.

The Vindicator isn't a must-have, but it will help out alot wiht it's Large Blast Template and strength Ten. It will work against Infantry and Vehicles, just make sure that you have infantry supporting it, otherwise it'll be overrun by the enemy.

Mechanized forces usually get Baal Predators, Vindicators and Regular Predators, alongside Razorbacks.

Jump Pack armies, usually gets Assault Marines, Sanguinary Priests, Librarians, Vanguard Veterans and from time to time, Dreadnoughts.

Sanguinary Guard, well, you NEED Commander Dante. I would get one Librarian for the cover save, and one Dread to kill those bad enemies.

Blood Rodeo takes mostly Bikes and Sanguinary Priests. With some Assault Marines.

Death Company, I am not really sure about this, but you should get at least 40 Death Company Marines, and 4 Chaplains with Astorath, with Lemartes too. Mostly, if I actually used them, I would go without Jump Packs(only to Astorath, maybe), and get Razorbacks.

Err, get yourself a pair of baals?

Two or three assault boxes, a DC box. These all come with jump packs and regular backpacks so you can make your core infantry models and fiddle around with list types.

One jump pack chaplain(/recusiarch) model (stick a regular backpack on him sometimes, so buy some magnets to make the swapping easy)

Assemble.

Play.

Paint.
