Ragnar conversion

So this is the third time I tried to get a Ragnar going. The first time was was just GWs model, and while it served on the table top, I hated the look.. I stripped it, cut up some pieces, and tried combining it with the new plastics for a better pose, but it was just as bad.

I decided to try one more time, this time using the WolfGuard w/lightning claws as a base. 5th edition made that model useless, as it was no longer cost effective. The cloak was kosarro khan - not sure where I got it, but I vaugely remember trading for it awhile ago. The shoulder was the only thing of old Ragnar I reused. Arms wer sanguinary guard, everything else was Space Wolf

So Dv8's Ragnar conversion is always on my mind - so awesome.. However, unlike DV8, I'm a terrible sculpter. however I have a steady knife and brush hand. I compesated by carving details from my bits collection and carefully gluing them in place. The bracelets - some critical pieces of Ragnars imagery, are all freehanded.

End result is... Well what do you all think? I tried my best to hit all to hit all his unique details.

I like the model very much. I've been wanting a proper ragnar for a while but I've never managed to convert one. You also did a fine job painting the model. The only part I'm not too convinced of is the head. It looks unnatural, somehow. Mostly around the mouth. In the top left picture, he looks like he's trying out lipstick, but not entirely sure just how much to use, or where it goes. I'd fix that if I were you. The eyes also don'l look to convincing, much like someone's given him two black eyes, or he added eyeliner to his experiments with makeup. I'd just use a slightly darker shade of the skin tone for the eye sockets and definitely make sure that the pupils aren't too big, or he'll just look like he's gone completely nuts.
Definitely more dynamic than most. Don't try to compare to Dv8....that man's models cannot be matched, I swear! But this is a solid Ragnar, though I would like to see him in the original blond, rather than the black hair that has come into fashion as of late! The blackmane was from the blackmane wolf he killed!

I'm not trying to compete with DV8, that's for sure! :P I only mentioned him because he is the gold standard at this point, and if this was going to work, I had to figure out how I could get similar (if a little more subpar) results with my own skillset.

I've only seen once piece of art of blond Ragnar, and everything else is black hair. Decided to not buck the trend.

I like it. Great mini. Only thing I would say is his frost weapon is a bit normal looking. I know you bit bashed him so that totally works. Other than that I like your work & painting a lot.

And yes DV8 is awesome. I had him make me (and my daughter for her school project) a Logan because of his Ragnar & Ulric. Definitly an awesome centerpiece to my army.

The bottom line is that it's all about practice. The only reason I am at the level I am (and even I don't think I'm that good compared to so many others out there) is because of practice and dedication, painting as much as possible as often as possible, and always pushing myself to do better than before.

With regards to your Ragnar, great concept. Just keep practicing and never settling for anything less than your best.

Don't you understand? We want you to tell us that it is a natural gift so that we are absolved from any responsibilty to improve. Don't tell me that it just takes hard work and persistence, thats the one thing I am trying to avoid :). So come on, be honest, there was a pact with a devil right? Or you got an artisans hands transplanted onto yours? Maybe you fasted on a mountain top for 40 days and emerged with new found painting skills?

Wispy, I love the model, it really gives the impression of Ragnar slashing through a melee, cutting down any foes he encounters but his focus is keep moving, keep moving, get to where he needs to be. Fantastic conversion.

Amen brother! I am so sick of the dark hair. Why would a wolf lord bother dying his hair?
