marine77
I played a game against a newer IG player last night. It turned into a real rout, but he made many mistakes in list building, deployment, and tactical execution due to his newness. Hopefully I provided a somewhat decent learning experience for him. You can see the full report at: Gone to Ground. I am interested to hear what people think. I am not the best at spotting list building errors with IG as I don't have much experience with them, but having half of the army sunk into heavy slots that are nowhere near optimal probably hurt him a lot. He also didn't adequately equip his veteran squads. Can you spot anything else he did? Thanks for the input. I personally think ratlings are a waste of points in a guard army... but some fools dare say I'm wrong! :) His special weapons squads don't have good weapon loadouts... when are you going to be using a flamer and sniper rifles at the same time? I mean yer it can happen but free flamers in a chimera would be better by miles... Put snipers in the command squad maybe... if he wanted to go for a long range shooty command squad... I find heavy weapons teams with lascannons have shoot me signs on them... some people swear by HWTs... but I would rather have my big guns in tanks... He didn't take special weapons in his vet squads... why take the vets why!!!!! Dump the special weapon squads give their weapons to the vets and get a few more normal infantry squads... if this is the kind of list you want... The punisher cannon sucks... seriously... I have a twin-linked one on a vulture and that sucks... but it looks so bad ass... On a russ not so bad ass but it still sucks... I'm not even going to go into the moves he made in the game... his army list makes me cry... marine77
Yeah. This guy had next to no idea what he was doing. I lost the units that I figured I would, but lost nothing of real substance. In the end, he really showed that he was new. Hopefully, this will help him makes some better decisions about his newer army lists. He will probably come back with a leafblower. TheRealAxel
In terms of advice for the Guard player, the key here is not to go into specifics. There are many different TYPES of Guard armies, from artillery companies (3 squadrons of 3 Basilisks is possible in under 1500 points w/ standard FoC) to airborne or air cavalry armies to foot slogging assault companies, and everything imaginable inbetween. I've played Guard for many years, and will hopefully for many more. The Imperial Guard is a sledgehammer if used well, whichever configuration you opt for on the day. The Guard is not an easy army to use, contrary to standard internet opinion. It depends heavily on mutual support between units, and player knowledge of what each unit is capable of. A Guard unit is not versatile like a Marine unit, nor particularly survivable. Removing models hand over fist can (and still does) get depressing, making it easy to fall into a "I can't possibly win after taking these casualties" mentality. A 2000 point army is not a good way to learn how to play Guard. Even experienced 40k players struggle to pick up the skills needed with Guard at this level. If you can, recommend (and even assist) the new guy to play smaller games. 1000 points is the most I would play until he is reasonably competent and comfortable with the basics of the game. Suggest to him to use Veterans to comprise all his Troops choices for the first games, upgraded with special and/or heavy weapons this time. They are somewhat easier to use than a Platoon, though I think they are more fragile than the Eldar. The reduction in model count will help him grasp the basic tactical concepts of the game. Before moving on from 1000 point games, make sure he has played with at least 1 Platoon. The options within just one platoon are enormous, from list building (find me another single FoC entry anywhere that lets you have >100 men and >15 heavy AND >10 special weapons) to deployment (to mob-up or not mob-up) to the sequence of firing, mutual support of units (aka how to avoid multiple assault) and the leap frog advance. I would also recommend to him to avoid the Elites section for now. All of the units in there are difficult to use well, but remarkably effective when in their chosen situation.
