EDIT 2: Updated with new pics of old models, with more to come! See last post.

You can probably guess who and what those are going to be when they're done. :D I don't want to take my tired old Doublewing to the Throne of Skulls, but I have a lot of other work I need to finish before I can do anything else to these guys.

I'm approaching the "mammoth" task that is making new models for my entire 26-mini 1500pt Doublewing list. So that's Belial in the middle there, with some of his command squad, and some of the "regular" troopers in the background. :) Once I get some other stuff out of the way, the plan is to make sure that each and every one of them is a pretty unique mini. I might just finish painting my original Sammael rather than replacing him, though.

Looking good, he Space Hulk Libby is a nice base. I'm actually doing one too as Space Hulk base (it's in WIPs), I only had a couple of Space Hulk models from ebay - I'm considering using the one that is holding the Nid head as a standard bearer . I assume the fellow to his right is going to be the Apothecary? Brother Omnio (spelling?) is a great base for one with his built in auspex.

Looking good so far. Clever mix of the red and grey models – should look very tasty. (Not too sure why Belial carries a book but no doubt you'll work some fluff into that B) - could be the names of killed DW brethren to avenge for instance).

Cheers

EPK: Yes, Omnio makes a great apothecary. <_< I think I stole the idea from someone in the Blood Angels board here who used one for a Sanguinary Priest. Before SH was released, I saved to pick up three copies... one of which was always intended for use as Deathwing. :( I'm unsure about the standard bearer as of yet, but I like the idea of Belial's whole command squad being made of the SH models to make them stand out. However, I'm trying to make all the other minis unique as well, so we shall see how it pans out.

Isiah - To me, the book is a nice mirror of the one I have on the hood of Sammael's Landspeeder, which is the real reason I left it on. :huh: I was thinking of trying to freehand Belial's banner onto either one whole page or as an inset next to some "text", but you raise some interesting ideas on what it could represent.

Some more (old) pictures;

These guys were the original plan for the command squad, hence going helmetless, until I remembered about the extra SH sets...

These ones are going to be the hardest to make stand out from every other set of Terminators. I'm very happy with the Sergeant though, he's the reason I have another Leftie or two between the three squads.

An outdated WIP for Belial and most of his squad. I kind of hit a snag when I realised that unless I gave the Sgt some kind of special weapons, the standard bearer would have to have a special weapon. Not sure what to do there really.

Sadly, not going to give these guys an update for a little while, I have other things to do first. :D But they will be done in time for Throne of Skulls in January. >_>;

  • 1 month later...

Just a small update, work was murderous over the Holidays and I have lots of other stuff to catch up on too. I want these guys done before Throne of Skulls here in the UK, which is the weekend after next... I can totally do it! :D

Coming along nicely. The Belial is fantastic. What did you use for his cape? I'd love to see a few more close ups.

The Large DA icon on the SS also came out pretty good - gives me an idea for my banner bearer whenever I finally get to him.

Thanks! The cape is the Wolf Guard Terminator cape, I just need to replace the wolf head with one of the Lion heads from the /High Elf White Lion chariot. I'll take some close-up pics later when I get the chance. There's also a different large icon on one of the other Storm Shields, I'll take some comparison pics as well.

The promised shield comparison shot;

I had a chance to get some paint on these guys today, but an attempt to cover up the red which was still showing through the white undercoat went... interestingly;

Totally without my meaning them to, they ended up looking... really French. Or at least, extremely European. Now, hre's the toss-up... do I stick with that look, and paint everyone else up to match, or do I go for the flat shaded look;

Which was the original intent for everyone... Thoughts, suggestions? I only have a week to paint all these guys!

Thanks for the shield pic.

(EDITED, as I misread what you were describing at first)

What is it you did to get them that way - drybrush dheneb stone vs. simply painting it? And what do you mean they look "French"?

I assume you mean the first group (made from SH minis) has a more stone looking feel and the second group w/AC is flat and you will highlight them up?

I don't mind the stone feel, but you would have to go back and clean them up anyway, right? If they were meant to be statues, that might suffice, but you probably want to go with the longer method you did the second group with.

Of course it comes down to preference

Er, when I say they look "french", the kind of grey highlighting really reminds me of a lot of European miniatures (though not done with anywhere near the kind of skill or care that most people doing it usually do). And interestingly, the colour is Skull White + a tiny amount of Charadon Granite, it's a really nice grey to highlight with. I only made it because I wanted to see if white + a tiny amount of ChaGra looked anything like white washed over with ChaGra and Devlan Mud... I've since had a go at drybrushing that same mix over the "flat" squad, and they look pretty good, I'll probably even out the earlier guys and then give them another drybrush.

So, naturally, as soon as I get these guys halfway painted, the new FAQ makes Cyclones a LOT better... I'm seriously considering dropping my Assault Cannons in favour of them. Which is infuriating, not least of all because I REALLY like my reconsecrated Space Wolves Assault Cannon. :lol: In terms of army selection, what do you guys think? I have exactly a week before my guys need to head to Nottingham with me to Warhammer World for the Throne of Skulls tourney, and the 20 points I'd gain by swapping out those weapons could go to a lot of good use...

Depressingly, I don't think the change in colour is really very apparent in the photos, I like how they're looking at the moment. I'm a little sad they lack the same kind of extreme contrast as Belial's squad though, and I'm still a little unsure as to how to deal with those guys...

Coming along nicely. That banner looks great but why combine the Apothecary and Banner bearer into one model?

I think one of my favorites is the pose and helmet of the far left TH/SS terminator. I love that old style feel.

Thanks! They're the same model as he's inevitably the last guy I want left alive, as the game I played today demonstrated nicely... Belial having both FNP and the +1A was pretty crucial to my victory, as the two of them were basically the only part of my army in a position to assault anything.

Updates! Nowhere near finished, but getting so close...

Also got my RW contingent basecoated, but they aren't photographing well, due to being pure black...

Urgh, my deadline is Friday morning (as I'm getting a ride up to Throne of Skulls). Progress so far;

And my Ravenwing are... still primed. >_>; This will be cutting it close.

Okay, while I have no decent photos, I am greatly impressed by how they all turned out in the end... AND they won me Best Dark Angels Player! Of Two. But I still won Best! >_>;

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/7324/p10009225144403.jpg

Believe it or not, I drew this one...

http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/3598/p10009255294328.jpg

And this is sadly the only pic of the army which really came out. I need to add highlights to the RW, but besides that I think they're worlds apart from my old ones, and I'm genuinely really happy with how they turned out. Christening them with a really cool little accolade was just the icing on the cake!

I see you went the cyclone route then :). So what did you do with the assault cannon arms?

I think they look awesome! Great muted colour scheme, great (matching) bases too. Brilliant and characterful model conversions. Oh and cool markers.

Thanks a lot guys! I'll have to get a photo of the little certificate from the Tourney tomorrow, it's on display elsewhere right now...

The Assault Cannon arms, like almost every other arm, were magnetised with a pin for support, so they've just been removed. Nothing stopping me from switching them out for friendly games. :) The extra range and S8 shots made all the difference at the Tournament, too; I couldn't have won a game against Necrons with the Assault Cannon loadout. I am tempted to give all my DW Sergeants Lightning Claws rather than their SB/PS, but that would leave me with more than one identical member of each squad... Decisions Decisions!

Also, the markers were very, very last minute... I realised I needed 3 objectives for the event, so I slapped some icons on round bases, washed Devlan Mud over Deneb Stone, job done.

Very nice army! How did you paint the bonewhite? It looks perfect :P

Thanks! I think I mentioned it above, but here's the complete rundown of paint for anyone interested;

The Ravenwing were just primed black... sadly I had no time to highlight them before the event, but now they'll get a little Charadon Granite love.

For the bone armour and the white parts on the Ravenwing it was a Skull White Basecoat, washed down with Devlan Mud + a dot of Charadon Granite thinned down with about 1/3 water. After that, I did a very thin layer or two of half-half Bleached Bone and Deneb Stone, avoiding the recesses. After that, they were either lightly misted or heavily drybrushed with Skull White with a tiny dot of Charadon Granite to make a cold, ashen grey which is what makes them stand out; it's a cold highlight over a warm base, so it looks like ash has been smeared over the bone in honour of the original Deathwing.

Skin was Tallarn Flesh with about 1/3 Bleached Bone, and a tiny spot of both Charadon Granite and Devlan Mud just to match the tone to the armour. I just added Elf Flesh and Skull White to the mix for highlights, then washed down with a thinned Ogryn Flesh/Devlan Mud mix.

Green was just Orkhide shade over the bone, highlighted up with Orkhide + Gretchin, and then Gretchin Green. Red was layered up Scorched Brown, Dark Flesh, Dark Flesh + Scab Red, Scab Red + Blood Red, Blood Red, and then washed down with Ogryn Flesh.

Metals were done by layering Tin Bitz, Boltgun Metal, a weird custom mixed Shining Gold/Mithril Silver I have from years ago, Burnished Gold, then a fairly heavy brush of Mithril Silver with a tiny hint of Burnished Gold. The burn marks were the old blue and purple inks washed lightly and then washed down with IIRC very thinned Devlan Mud.

Power Weapons were 2/3 Chaos Black 1/3 Hawk Turquoise, heavily drybrushed up Turquoise, then Turquoise + White, then glazed about 3 times with a custom mix I made using Liquitex mediums, Asurmen Blue and Hawk Turquoise that's about the same as the old GW Turquoise Glaze.

Think that's it! The thing I'm most proud of is that I did pretty much everything but the Bone and Green on the deathwing, and the black and metals on the Ravenwing, at Warhammer World the night before the tournament! See below;
