Xanthism inspired 'loyal' traitors

Xanthism - The most obviously Radical grouping within the Inquisition, it advocates the use of warp-based weaponry, such as daemon possessed swords, daemonhosts, and generally turning the power of Chaos against itself. Named after Inquisitor-Master Zaranchek Xanthus, executed as a heretic in the 32nd millennium.

Phaenonites – A Xanthite splinter faction particularly interested in the merging of the warp and technology. They have turned their back on the God-Emperor and believe in the rebirth of the Imperium under their own leadership, and as such are one of the only Inquisitorial Factions to be declared wholesale Excommunicate Traitoris.

 

 

I want to use one of these schools of thought in the creation of a renegade chapter, without relying too much on 'an Inquisitor made them do it'.

But that's kinda the point - the chances are an Inquisitor did make them do it.

 

My idea is to have them a bit like an opposing Exorcists chapter - they are possessed and then exorcised, whereas mine wouldn't be exorcised, using the daemons strength to bolster their own to achieve 'good' things.

This would work best with Xanthism rather than Phaenonites.

 

Alternatively, a 'Phaenonite' chapter would be the equivolent of the Chamber Militant of the faction - evil Deathwatch/Grey Knights under the control of an Emperor hating Inquisitorial faction. These would just be traitors, no loyalty involved.

 

They are the two broad ideas, but I don't want option one to be too Relictors or Soul Drinkers meets Beasts of Annihilation and I don't want option two to be what every Chaos chapter is anyway - Emperor hating - without a real reason and philosophy behind it.

 

I need a few ideas from you guys how to personalise it - I would ideally like a reasonable daemonic influence but I don't know how to pull it off without it getting either too ridiculous or too mundane.

Phaenonites: The Chapter experiments with merging the warp with tech independently (maybe to shore up some perceived shortfall or real shortfall). The Imperium finds out and censors them. While they are making up for their sins a few Phaenonites come and share ideas and win them over to their side. They don't hate the Emperor but hate the small mindedness of the Imperium (lack of innovation).

 

This would be the direct I would take. Maybe make the event that starts them experimenting be an accident that occurs during a battle with Chaos. Maybe a plasma cannon merges with a demon or is instilled with pure warp energy and decimates the Chaos worshippers where they Marines were going to lose before that event.
