How do I basecoat a powerweapon

Recommended Posts

Bretheren,

I am planning to paint powerswords and thunderhammers pretty standard. For the powerweaponeffect I am using thicker lines of the dark shadow grey. Over this finer lines of vallejohs electric blue and finally some tiny points of pure white highlights. Problem is - it just does not have the best effect on a weapon which is mithril silver. So I tried to basecoat my weapons with boltgun metall, which si much darker - but still not really what I want.

I have seend for instance in the SM:BA Codex that the powerweapons are pretty dark underneath the blue flashes, but still look a bit metallic.

Does anyone know how they did this? Could I probably use a 1:1 or even 2:1 mix of chaos black and boltgun metall?

Regards

Tony

I don't think they're actually painting metal basecoat. Looks like NNM to me, but maybe I'm wrong. My PW's (ok, the only I have ) are (is) basecoated black.

Try mixing black with blue in a 9:1 ratio as a basecoat, then go add progressive lines of highlighting. Hope it helps.

Blue lighting effects you are going for, a black or almost black base coat will give the best contrast and make the lightning efffect pop more. I would use a dark blue like regal blue maybe with some black mixed in to make it really dark. I think I actually use a color called nightshade something or other, I can't remember right now. If you want metallic or grey do the same but like you said darken it up, a lot. Just a hint of color will look best.
