Kronk
Hey there. I'm new to the Black Library books. I've read Helsreach, Nightbringer and First and Only. I'd like to get into the Horus Heresy books, but I have a couple of questions. 1. Do all of these books progress the main story-arch? 2. Is there an order to read these in? Oldest first? 1-4-2-3, etc? 3. Are some of these spin-offs that cover a chapter's viewpoint on the Heresy but doesn't advance the main plot line of the HH? Thanks a ton! I got the following list of books from the Wikipedia entry. I left off the books that haven't been published, yet. Horus Rising - Dan Abnett - April 2006 False Gods - Graham McNeill - June 2006 Galaxy in Flames - Ben Counter - Oct 2006 The Flight of the Eisenstein - James Swallow - March 2007 Fulgrim - Graham McNeill - July 2007 Descent of Angels - Mitchel Scanlon - October 2007 Legion - Dan Abnett - March 2008 The Dark King and The Lightning Tower - Graham McNeill and Dan Abnett - June 2008 - Audio Book Battle for the Abyss - Ben Counter - August 2008 Mechanicum - Graham McNeill - December 2008 Tales of Heresy - Kyme & Priestley - April 2009[3] Fallen Angels - Mike Lee - July 2009[4] Raven’s Flight - Gav Thorpe - Feb 2010 - Audio Book A Thousand Sons - Graham McNeill - March 2010 Nemesis - James Swallow - August 2010 The First Heretic - Aaron Dembski-Bowden - October 2010 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/216056-where-to-start-with-the-black-library-books/ Share on other sites
Irabrai
Definately 1-2-3-4 then its your call. Though saying that, you've got to read Descent of Angels and then Fallen Angels, or this specific storyline wont make sense. Also -if- you're going to listen to the audio books, listen to Raven's flight after Fulgrim. Personally, I read them in order, but thats just because I got a load of them in one hit a few xmas' ago from my bro, and thought i'd read them in the order they came out. Gv0zD
1-2-3-4 definitely, as was mentioned. When I started reading HH novels I picked up the 1st one and then went on.. However, there are some 'weak' novels, but as you can see in other topic here tastes differ so I'd suggest that you read them all and make your own judgment. You can always stop reading 'bad' novel and go to the next one ;) As for your original question: 1. Do all of these books progress the main story-arch?2. Is there an order to read these in? Oldest first? 1-4-2-3, etc? 3. Are some of these spin-offs that cover a chapter's viewpoint on the Heresy but doesn't advance the main plot line of the HH? 1. Not all the books progress the main story. Mostly the novels are dedicated to certain Legions and take place in different periods. The one progressing series are about Horus and these are the novels from 1 to 3, while books 4 and 5 also relate to the events described in the first 3 novels. 2. I think reading the novels in the order they were released is most appropriate. 3. Somehow, yes. But I won't spoil anything. Discover it yourself :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/216056-where-to-start-with-the-black-library-books/#findComment-2576122 Share on other sites
