Element 3: Markings

A
s with the other Primogenitor Chapters, the Inceptors were strict adherents of the Codex Astartes, written by their Primarch, Roboute Guilliman. This mindset was imparted upon their Successor Chapter and, following tradition, one of the first decisions made by the fledgling Chapter's first Chapter Master was the heraldry that would adorn the armour of the battle-brothers. In accordance with the dictates of the Codex Astartes, the Chapter Master chose a color scheme that would distinguish his Chapter from the other Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes.

VOTE: Determine the method by which the Chapter displays company and squad affiliation, and Sergeants.

This element will be determined a little differently. Instead of members submitting their ideas, we will have a simple voting process. This voting process may take place in two steps, depending upon the outcome of the first vote. Some of the options in the first vote allow for a breakdown of further options, which will necessitate a second vote (e.g., the shoulder pad option has further options that include the rims, squad badge, squad number, and the field; whereas the helmet option has further options for the whole helmet or a helmet stripe). The other options, however, are specific enough and won’t need a second vote. Note that the choices are based around the Chapter adhering to the Codex Astartes. While the Codex allows for some variation, we’re going to follow established patterns and require certain things to be represented. I’m largely following the variation allowed by Insignium Astartes here, though with updates based on 4th edition and beyond ‘Eavy Metal practices. The color scheme we selected drives this somewhat in that the standard use of shoulder pad rims to indicate Company affiliation is not an option since we have the different rim colors.

Voting: Members may vote for each aspect of Marking in the polls. Voting will end on Sunday, 5 December 2010 (which means I’ll accept anything I receive prior to the first time I login on Monday, 6 December ;) ).

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in this discussion.

What are we going to do in the event of a tie with the squad markings?

We'll probably go with the shoulder pad since that is the more common method.

For the red helmet, does that mean different helmet color or red helmet?

That means that Sergeants would be indicated by having red helmets.

Now there are a few potential combinations that would have interesting effects. If we decide to indicate company affiliation by the helmet and decide that Sergeants will be indicated by having a red helmet, then the company affiliation will default to a helmet stripe (as opposed to the full helmet color). Likewise, if we decide to put the squad badge on the right kneepad and decide to indicate company affiliation on a kneepad, then the company affiliation will default to the left.

We're going to play things by ear. If polls end up with incompatible results, then we'll vote for alternatives.

I think a red helmet for sergeants can work really well with this scheme, as red compliments greens, but not too bright red...

But my only real concern is, the scheme is busy already, so adding more color elements for company designation can really make it all over the place... just bear that in mind when we get to designing the chapter badge.

MFA kicking in here ;)

I would just like to offer my opinion on the red helmet for those who are undecided (even though, most of those who are going to vote have probably done so already). Yes it looks good, but as i mentioned in the main thread, dark green and black has a very Dark Angels feel to it. Dark green/black and red is a combination that makes the Dark Angels association even stronger, so I think keeping the white intact would be best.
Looks like I finally picked winners.

Well, the ones I voted for, a few days ago, were winning. However, they are now all losing. :tu:

That does it, I'm voting for my least favourite options from now on - reverse psychology will take care of the rest. ^_^
