Assaults: Targets

Recommended Posts

More a question of citation that an actual question, but this came up in a game recently.

There is nothing we could find in the rules that said you had to charge the nearest target. If you hadn't shot at a unit, you could charge past any number of unit provided you could reach the one you wanted to attack. So a unit of Terminators could charge between two units of Boyz to get at a juicy unit of Nobs behind them, or past a row of Guardsmen to crunch the Platoon Command Squad hiding at the back.

Were we wrong, or is this really the case?

aslong as you can obey the movement rules about room between bases and not being within an inch of the other units then its fine.

infact theres nothing stopping you getting multiple charges off, charging the rearmost unit and moving other models into other units within reach

You don't even have to keep an inch distance anymoren the assaultphase. If the base fits through, you can assault.

I see. Then we were correct. Thank you for the quick reply, much appreciated.

Also the only think to be wary of is Special Rules that make you charge the nearest target - which Im sure you were aware of!

Indeed, those were mentioned too. On a complete tangent, not even a shadowfield will save an Archon in combat with the Sanguinor and a reduced unit of Sanguinary Guard in the long run.

The assault rules that allow you to be within 1" of the unit you Assault don't specify that it's only for that unit. Imagine if it was...then your opponent could simply merge his units together - a la the dirty old trick for giving infantry units in the open cover saves - and make it impossible to assault either. So you can be as close to other units as you wish when charging whatever unit you choose to charge. In fact, you can conduct a multi-assault if you really can be that close. :)
