Sanguinary Priests and Rhinos

Hey all,

I have been thinking about making a Rhino based force, but have seem to run into a brick wall. I want to run 10 Man Assault Squads for double Melta Guns, but that leaves no room for the Priest.

I was thinking about running a full Tactical squad for every RAS, Combat Squad-ing it so the heavy weapon, (Las Cannon,) stays behind and having the priest in the Tactical squad's Razor Back, which would be used for anti armor and holding objectives cleared off by the RAS. The Razor Back could keep pace with the Rhino Based squad and keep them in the Priest's bubble.

What do you think?

I run RAS x9 with a melta gun and a powerfist. I give the priest a power weapon and I find that the str 9 fist on the charge tends to do alright against even the heavily armored tanks if my melta shot doesn't do the trick. Remember that you can also always give the sgt. and infernus pistol if you want to keep two melta weapons in the squad. I really can't understate what the priest adds to the unit with FNP and furious charge.

Pretty much this.

While running tactical squads with priests isnt necessarily a bad idea, you will almost always find that you wish you had the priest with an assault squad. I usually kit out two squads of marines like Ruthven does, sticking a similarly equipped priest with them and then have a 10 man in a rhino with 2 meltaguns.

A great example of what I'm thinking about here is: You can't have your cake and eat it too.

How about a Lightning Claw and Combi-Melta? My favorite configuration by a long shot. That way you keep your two Melta shots, and get a Lightning Claw out of it.

That would certainly work, though I tend to just go for the power weapon and call it good. I don't like to jack up the price too much on an Independent Character with 1 wound and no invulnerable save. 65 points already pretty pricey!

A lightning claw costs the same amount as a power weapon, and I would recommend it as well, since you won't get the +1A bonus for a second close-combat weapon with the combi-melta anyways. I think that you're thinking of putting these on the Sanguinary Priest, whereas I read Dingareth's post as suggesting that these go on the assault squad Sergeant.

Thanks for the Replies,

@ Ruthven and SeraphimDeSanguinius: Good points, I guess I am worrying too much about the extra melta.

@ Redfinger: Good idea, though he does become very expensive. I don't think he could be considered part of the unit while it is embarked, but he could certainly join it after it disembarked.

@ Dingareth: I always forget about Combi Meltas on IC's, Would certainly help ease the loss of the squad's second melta.

@ Ruthven: Yes, its pricey, but if you think about it you have paid for his weapons by not having the other melta in the squad. The other RAS member is more then the price of a Lightning Claw, and the Melta gun is the same price as an IC's Combi Melta.

@ Erasmus of Baal: I am pretty sure Dingareth was referring to the priest, seeing as the RAS Sergeant can't take Combi Weapons
