I read of the Ultramarines being named after the deep blue of macragge's oceans.

This definitely exists somewhere, as I too have read the same.

Thirded, though I cannot recall where.

I'm pretty sure you're all getting this mixed up with Macragge's oceans being the source of their armour's color. I'm guessing you've all read Rules Of Engagment in Age Of Darkness?

I've read pretty much everything there is about the Ultramarines and tend to remember this type of stuff in particular. Plus, we tend to go over this stuff with a fine-toothed comb and discuss stuff to death over in the Ultramarines section.

We've gone over this in particular numerous times, and we've never run across that explanation AFAIK....

I held the perception that it was just to do with the fact ultramarine is a shade of blue and they were named so, much in the way of red for Blood Angels, grey for Wolves, White Scars says it all  but also agree that it would be good to have some indication as to the legions pre-primarch names to give more of a connection to their Terran origins.

Also, makes me wonder if that when the Emperor is searching the galaxy for the primarchs, does this mean that all 20 legions originally left Terra at the beginning before being presented to their primarch, as from what I can remember from the short story where Khârn first meets Angron, he mentions something akin to jealousy/envy of other legions who were reunited with their "fathers", implying that there was one hell of a fleet

Rules Of Engagement specifically mentions that Guilliman's armor (and therefore probably the whole Ultramarines Legion's armor) is specifically the color of Macragge's stormy seas.

That's the only mention I've EVER seen relating the Ultramarines to the seas of Macragge.
