Good Armour recipies

I do mine as follows:

-Shadow Grey Basecoat

-Wash Badab Black (fairly heavy but not too much)

-Reapply Shadow Grey to all but the recesses of the model (I tend to overbursh it heavily for the sake of speed now but the first few squads it was layered on, not much difference I think)

-Layer on a 2:1 mix of Shadow Grey:Codex Grey to where the light should hit he armour (I go for a Light source above the model and so paint this onto the upper half(ish) of each armour plate, on the legs I do it in lines down the leg which you can kinda see on Thorvald. But it can be done with any light source.)

-Following the same rule for the above highlight, apply a 1:1 mix of Shadow Grey:Codex Grey to the armour, only this time it should cover less of the armour and really be focussed on the upper facing (or which ever one is closest to you light source).

-At this point the amour looks very bright so now you need to darken it with a wash of Devlan Mud (this also helps to take out some of the blue from the colour). I tend to just do one coat of slightly watered down Devlan Mud although if you want it darker you could do 2 or 3. It's also worth noting at this point that this can result in an odd powder pale brown gather in the recesses of the armour but since this is mainly on the joints which get painted over it doesn't really matter.

Here's a pic of the final outcome:

Hope that helps, if you want to know how the Battle Damage is done as well just say.

Primed black

basecoat Fenris Grey or Shadow Grey (it really doesn't matter which)

Badab Black wash

surfaces painted 50/50 mix of Shadow Grey and Space Wolves Grey

edges highlighted Space Wolves Grey

light drybrushing of Space Wolves Grey

Grey: Krylon Grey Primer, found at walmart or home depot. I spray that on as a primer, then wash the whole model with Badab Black. After it is completely dry, I overbrush/drybrush the armor with Adeptus Battlegrey (which is nearly a perfect match to the Krylon), leaving the armor dark in the recesses. I highlight it with a drybrush/edge of Skull White. After I paint the trim in gold, I use Badab Black again to line-in the gold.

Red: Over the Krylon, I paint Mechrite Red. Then wash the red area with Badab Black. You have to be careful to sort of draw the wash evenly over the area so it doesn't dry all blotchy.

After the model is completely done, I varnish it with Krylon Matte Clear varnish. It actually helps blend the mechrite red on pauldrons to the Badab Black. And you never have to worry about paint rubbing off.

Gotta love the $3 krylon spray paints.

Chaos Black spray (or any other undercoat spray you like)

Adeptus Battle Grey basecoat

Badab Black Wash

once dry, drybrush (very dry) with Fortress Grey

This gets a nice, stoney looking grey. Plus, it's quicker than painting highlights.

That sounds like just the number of steps for me! Do you have any pics of power armored SW's with this technique?

Thanks,

- Chaos Black spray

- Basecoat with 70:30 mix of Shadow Grey: Space Wolves Grey

- Blending towards the edges with Space Wolves Grey added to the mix

- Repeat the process, continuously adding more Space Wolves Grey, several times

- Hard highlights of pure Space Wolves Grey on the edges

That's the only powered armoured painted model I have at the moment! Hope it helps!

I used Dreamcoat paints, PM me if the color strikes your fancy and I will get you the recipe and painting techniques.

BTW the heavy drybrush is intentional, from a distance it is meant to cast a softening effect.

Vrox

I'm a black to white kind of guy. I start at black, then layer up to a light grey(astronomicon ish) for the edging on the major highlights. I will post a pic up of one of my nearly finished terminators in a bit.

He is painted rather messily, due to the fact he is just a troop. The grey took me about an hour and a half.
