littlbitz
This was the first of 3 games at a 1250 point Tournament that was held at my local gaming store. There were about 12 people in attendance. Game 1 was against Josh, a local Tyranid player. I was excited about this match up because he handed me a loss in the 3rd game of the previous tournament, and I was out to try and get some revenge. His army consisted of approximately the following: Hive Tyrant and 2x Hive Guard, a unit of 3x "shooty" Hive Guard, a couple of units of Gaunts, a unit of Gene Stealers, a Tyra?..something big, The Doom of Malen...whatever in a Pod thing, and a Carnifex. My Army was: Brother Captain Vindicis (Belial), 3 Squads of Deathwing, a Dreadnought, and a Landraider. The Primary mission was an objective based one, where each time a unit entered a terrain piece the controlling player rolled a die, on a roll of a six, that terrain piece became the objective. This was worth 10 points if a scorining unit controlled the objective, if the opposing player managed to contest it, then he "stole" have the points and each player got 5. The Secondary Objective was a single marker placed outside of each players deployment zone, if a player controlled his own placed objective, then this was worth 6 points. The Tertiary Objective was that a point was earned for each Monstrous Creature or Vehicle (including walkers) that was destroyed during the game, the one who earned the most points gained 4 points. Deployment was standard Dawn of War. I won the roll of to choose board side, set-up and First turn, but opted to give it to my opponent. He deployed his Gaunts, and opted to walk everything else on in his first turn, coming on in a tight formation on his left side. I deployed two of my squads on the board, trusting in night-fight the first turn to limit his shooting, and for hopes that I could quickly check some terrain pieces for the objective. In my first turn, I rolled my Landraider onto the board, and moved 2 of my Terminator squads into pieces of terrain, my Dreadnought came on as well, far to my right, to check a hill. With no shooting to be done, I checked all three pieces of terrain. No six. In his turn, he rolls for his reserves (the Doom guy is his only unit off the board) but he doesn't show. In other movement, he moves a couple of his units into two different terrain pieces to check for the objective, as he moves his larger creatures towards board center and my chosen objective. You guessed it, when rolling for the objective a six comes up and the ruin in the far right corner, furthest away from my army becomes the objective. In my turn I quickly decide that trying to get my footslogging units to that objective is a fools folly, and if I use the Landraider mounted squad, then I spread my forces too thin, and I will get over run. I decide to go for the secondary and tertiary objectives, and use my Dreadnought, running up a flank to try and make it to the objective to contest it. He will be alone, but that is the Tyranids weak side with little support, it might be doable. I slowly advance through the terrain with my footslogging squads, and move forward six inches with my Landraider. I use all available fire power to begin to widdle down the Carnifex that is advancing towards my left side, and I cause a couple of wounds. My Dreadnought moves forward towards the ruin shooting as he goes, and kills a couple of Gaunts. The Tyranids Turn 3, the Doom-bug shows up in his Pod. and he plays him boldly attempting to ruin my day... I lose a couple of Terminators to his Psychic power, I hate that guy... In his movement phase he continues to advance with his big bugs towards my lines, and decides he needs to picket-line his Gaunts, stretching them thin from the Objective to his Hive Tyrant in an effort to stay within synapse range. His Hiveguard take a couple of shots at my Landraider, but fail to scratch the paint. In my turn 3 I continue my advance with my Dreadnought, and kill a couple of more Gaunts shooting as I am moving. Captain Vindicis breaks off from his squad and is going to charge the "Doom-bug" the footslogging sqaud that has the assault cannon shifts left a bit, towards the Tyranids chosen objective and opens fire, I shift the Landraider in an effort to gains some pot shots, and the other Squad prepares to attack the Pod. I lose a few more Terminators to the "Doom-bug's" psychic power (did I mention I hate that guy?) but my shooting fells the Carnifex. In close combat the Doom-bug and the Pod go down, and I consolidate my position. Turn 4 sees the Tyranids start to scramble, coming around one side of the ruin with a large unit of Gaunts, while advancing over the top of the center ruin with his Hive Tyrant, all the while trying to stay within synapse range of the Gaunts. His super big bug continues to head towards my strong side (my left) while his shooty Hive Guard start to move into position to target the Dreadnought which is now threatening his objective. In the assault phase, his "fleet" move with the Gaunts wasn't enough to get them into close combat, now thay are sitting ducks. In my turn I advance with my Heavy Flamer squad and prepare to burn the Gaunt squad. Whats left of my assault cannon squad shifts in an attempt to stay away from the big bug, shooting as they go, I advance 6" with my landraider and open fire. On my right side, I move my Dreadnought towards the objective in the far corner, and instead of shooting, make a run move into the cover of the building, contesting it, and threatening the Gaunt squad inside. My Heavy flamer and stormbolter fire causes horrendous damage to the Gaunt squad, I charge in to finish them off. Tyranids turn 5, the Bugs are in a bad way. His Gene stealer squad moves through the wood line, and begins to head towards his own objective. The Hive Tyrant has to back off of the Center Objective in an effort to continue to keep the Gaunts holding the primary objective in check. The Hive Guard shoot at the Dread but the cover of the ruins prevents any damage to the Ancient warrior. In my turn 5 I decide to go for it. I make my dangerous terrain check with the Landraider and drive fast right up to my objecitve. I continue to contest his objective with the remnants of my Assault Cannon Terminator squad moving in close enough to fire and engage the Big bug in CC, I send Captain Vindicis in towards the Big Tyra...thingy supporting the Deathwing squad. My Dreadnought opens fire with the Heavy Flamer and Assault cannon into the Guant sqaud in the ruin. Many Gaunts die to the Heavy Flamer of the Dreadnought, the battle against the Big Bug is an epic one with the Deathwing coming out on top, but both the Big Bug and Captain Vindicis fall in the melee. Rolling to see if the game continues, Josh rolls a six! These bugs just don't want to stop coming... In the Tyranid 6th turn he continues to back off with his Hive Tyrant, and consolidates his Gaunts back into sqaud coherency. His Hive Guard again shoot at the Dreadnought, this time, blowing of the Heavy Flamer and getting a "cannot move or shoot" result. He advances with yet another squad of Gaunts, and moves the Gene Stealers dangerously close to my now very small squad with the assault cannon. In my Sixth turn, I again advance with the Land raider, moving it about 7" and positioning it so that the Hive Tyrant could not move within 3" of my objective should the game continue. I moved my Assault cannon squad behind a wall, contesting the Tyranids objective and preparing for the enevitable Genestealer charge. I move my other squad in position to receive the 2nd wave of Gaunts that is about to hit next turn. This ends my sixth turn. Rolling yet again to see if the game continues, another six! 7th and final turn for the Tyranids. Josh attempts once again to destroy my Dreadnought with his Hive Guard, but only immobilizes it. He realizes that if he charges my Landraider that his Hive Tyrant will be out of synapse range of his Gaunts so doesn't risk it. He charges his other Gaunt squad into my Heavy Flamer squad, and the Stealers charge my Assault Cannon Squad. When the smoke clears, he has managed to take his own objective, killing the remnants of the Assault Cannon Squad. My other squad is locked in combat with the Gaunts, and my Landraider with a sqaud still mounted holds my objective. In my Turn seven, My Landraider does a 180 turn, and my Standard Bearer squad unloads onto my objective, I make a roll for dangerous terrain, and move my Landraider 12" contesting the Tyranids chosen objecitve. With my Dreadnought contesting the Primary Objective the game ends. Results: Primary: contested, 5 points Deathwing, and 5 points Tyranids Secondary: Deathwing wins, 6 points Deathwing, 0 points Tyranids Tertiary: Deathwing wins with 3 monstrous creatures killed, 0 Tyranids. 4 points to the Deathwing, and 0 Tyranids. Final Score: Deathwing 15, Tyranids 5 A solid victory for the Deathwing! Chaplain Lucifer
pretty cool to see your amy in action. It held on pretty good against Nids. Too bad your opponents army wasn't painted to it's full.. EPK
Yes, that was a good read and congrats on holding your own. As mentioned your army is beautiful and I love the extra character you gave it with the gold face masks and mace/flail count-as thunder hammers.
