jjfelber
So everyone is talking about cover saves and how important they are. Did I miss something? We only get one save and apart from scouts that save is a 3+ from the PA or better. So does it really matter if you have a 5+ cover save from storm caller? How often do you get hit by guns that have an AP value of 3 or less? There are missile launchers, las-cannons, Melta weapons, Railguns, Plasma, Gauss weapons. Most of these weapon are at a huge Strength and target your vehicles first. On top of that it the number of shots of these weapons in usually one. Maybe wrong, but don't template weapons ignore cover saves? So those huge template weapons with AP3 dont care if you are ducking. The big thing I hear people talking about is Stormcaller and Saga of the hunter. So your unit gets a 4+ cover save. I must be missing something, this has to be good... right? Do Vehicles get cover saves? I believe so, and I understand why those are needed, and I understand why you would want to put you longfangs/thundwolves/bikes, really any small unit into cover. I also understand some save is better then no save. So when 10 fire-dragons open up 10 melta shots on you you can save some of them. What about a screen unit of wolves. What is that good for? Again is it another cover save, a distraction, both. Can wolves give a cover save to vehicles? What What about other vehicles can they give cover saves to other vehicles? Can I put my riflemen dread behind a rhino, shoot all 4 shots and get a 4+ cover save? Is the hype just that; the ability to save a one or two models? Quillen
Flamer template weapons ignore cover. Blast markers you get saves from unless it's mortars, right? And invul saves will protect you from AP3 weapons. WHich helps if you're rushing across a kill zone. Some of the guys will make it. So yes it's just about saving 1 or 2 models a shooting phase. Still 1 or 2 models can change things later on. And yes you can put a dread behind a Rhino or LandRaider for a cover save. I like putting one behind a Vinidicator. Then it has back up from close Assault. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/216550-cover-saves/#findComment-2582212 Share on other sites

Wolf Lord Hallbjorn
The only time you would be denied a cover save from a blast weapon is if it's a barrage and you're not standing in area terrain. There aren't tons of barrage weapons to be had, so cover saves are indeed important.
