Ulfhedinn
Most would agree that combi-weapons are a very cheap way to add ranged options to Wolf Guard. In my opinion the most cost effective use of combi-weapons are on WG Pack Leaders being added to Grey Hunter squads as the second special weapon. I think most would agree with this, so I would like to shift to a discussion on the cost effectiveness of combi-weapons in Logan Wing Armies (PA vs TDA)… 1) Many posts around the web say that Logan Wing Armies should only take Wolf Guard Packs in TDA. 2) Combi-weapons on PA Wolf Guard cost X points. 3) Combi-weapons on TDA Wolf Guard cost X points plus a storm bolter. 4) In drop pods and land raiders one TDA WG takes the space of two PA WG. DISCUSSION QUESTION: When adding combi-weapon weapons to a WG Pack do you prefer to add them as TDA or PA? Below I pose an example where my intent is to field 4 combi-meltas in a Logan Wing drop pod or LR (10 Wolf Transport). Example 1: Pod or LR (1 x Character in TDA; 4 Combi-Weapon TDA; no room for a heavy weapon) Example 2: Pod or LR (1 x Character in TDA; 4 Combi-Weapon PA; 1 Twin Wolf Claw TDA; 1 Heavy Weapon TDA) I know the two examples given are very limited situations but if you were choosing between example 1 and 2, which would you choose? Niiai
I would of course go for option 2. I think a lott of people would have. You are loosing out on the fact that what people really use wolf guards for is getting 5 for the weapon. You can also mix and match pressing more bodies into a "terminator" drop pod then regular marine. (Although they would probably just teleport down since they can not take a dorp pod, exept the blood angels.) Another of the SM codex's streanght is of course the fact that we can splitt of the wolf guards. I think that one unit option is what makes wolf guards very dynamic when building the list. If you go for option 1, then at least buy a 5th wolf guard. Eather in a grey hunter squad, or give him a cyclone and put him with the longfangs. (Although for 63 points you can just get 2 more longfangs.) If you are willing to spend the points on it you can give the char a weapon and a storm shield, and then you do not really need the terminator armour unlocking more room. Need the +2? Get rune armour. If he is a psyker it is diferent. That way if you get shot by a lasor cannon you can put it one one with a shield, or a poor cheap power armour unit, and if you get shot by small arms fire you can put it on the +2. If you are droping also consider the flamer. Deplying 2 from the pod plus the flamer templates 9" you have a good chance to do some serius hurting. nurglez
did you say space wolves should teleport down? they cant ;) I think that a mixed logan wing is better then a pure terminator one, you will get way more bodies on the ground at similar cost. However, I run a logan wing because I want to use only terminators, but I will probably try a mixed list at some point just for the fun of it :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/216820-frugality-and-combi-weapons/#findComment-2586439 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
Combi-weapons work well on wolf gaurd with powerfists or in TDA, as they wont be getting a pistol bonus anyways. One of my favorite WG packs is 8 guys with PW+BP, and 2 guys with C-M+PF. Runs 310pts, but its very killy and alot of fun when I want that kind of hammer unit. Niiai
What Grey Mage? No TDA for flamers or anything? Or is it Cyclone Missile`? I read Combi Melta Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/216820-frugality-and-combi-weapons/#findComment-2586838 Share on other sites
Ulfhedinn
What do you guys think about this for a balanced, low cost, scoring unit in a Logan Wing Army? 1 x PA-WG (PF/CM) 5 x PA-WG (CM) Las-Plas Razor Back (Long Range Lascannon / Mid Range TL Plasma / Short Range Punch 6xMelta / HTH 2xPF 10xCCW) 233 Points Taking these as building blocks to add to one main TDA-2xCML footslogging squad with Logan is one idea I have...obviously I would have some Long Fangs and other elements depending on the game size. 233 points does not seem overpriced when compared to: 1 x PA-WG (PF/CM) 1 x PA-GH (Melta) 4 x PA-GH Las-Plas Razor Back (Long Range Lascannon / Mid Range TL Plasma / Short Range Punch 2xMelta / HTH 2xPF 5/10xCCW) 198 Points What do you think? Stormbrow II
Option 2: you get more bodies, increased combat killyness and the same number of shots. I think that a mixed logan wing is better then a pure terminator one, you will get way more bodies on the ground at similar cost. QFT. Niiai
why no love for the weapon choise per 5 wolf guard? I know you are not a fan of land raiders, but you could stick 2 in other squads and use a drop pod. Ulfhedinn
The only downside I see for including a TDA w/ Heavy Flamer is no sweeping advance...is this your reason Grey Mage or do you just like the extra body shooting at the same range as the rest of the squad?
