how to skin a tau?

Wolf Lord Mjolnir

Thanks for the kindly invitation there Wilhelm, I think I will pass on it, I happen to like the frozen wastes where I live. I have heard enough horror stories about those little (CENSORED) to think that they are cute and cuddly. I'd sooner go work training wolves to be house pets.....oh wait I have done that and have the scars to prove it.

See now you are just letting your paranoia get the better of you.

Thanks for the on topic (and off topic - I think) discussion and tips.

Here is an outline of the army I think I will take (points may not be quote right but I will add it up at home).

Please note that we can use Forge World rules so I will be using my Lucius Pattern dreadnought drop pods (dreads can assault when they land)

***due to rewards from other games in this campaign I can any one model/unit the RELENTLESS and another the ETERNAL WARRIOR skills - any suggestions)***

1750pts

+++HQ+++

Wolf Priest (basic and nothing added) (rides in Crusader with pack 2)

+++Elites+++

Dreadnought, heavy flamer, multi melta and Lucius pattern prop pod

Dreadnought, heavy flamer, multi melta and Lucius pattern prop pod

Scouts x 6 meltagun, plasma pistol x 2 and melta bombs (maybe overkill?)

+++Troops+++

Grey Hunter pack 1 (x10), plasma gun x 2, drop pod

Grey Hunter pack 2 (x10), melta gun x 2, wolf standard, power fist, Mark of the Wulfen (rides in Crusader with Wolf Priest)

Grey Hunter pack 3 (x6), melta gun, wolf standard, Mark of the Wulfen, Razorback w/ extra armour and TLAC

Grey Hunter pack 4 (x6), flamer, wolf standard, power fist, Mark of the Wulfen, Razorback w/ extra armour and TLLC

+++Heavy support+++

Long Fangs x 6, Missile launcher x 4, lascannon x 1, Razorback w/ TLLC

Land Raider - Crusader w/ extra armour (carries Wolf Priest and Grey Hunter pack 2)

Something like the above - the odd loadout for Razorbacks in based on what I have available (2 x TLLC, 2 x HB, 1 x TLAC).

Would welcome comments as I have never used Scouts before.

Alternatively, I may go with this:

Ragnar Blackmane

Wolf Priest

3 x wolf guard (each with combi melta and powerfist)

2 x dreadnought with multi melta and heavy flamer in Lucius pattern drop pod (can assault the turn they land)

9 x grey hunters with mark of the wulfen, wolf standard, meltagun and drop pod (joined by wolf guard)

9 x grey hunters with mark of the wulfen, wolf standard, meltagun and drop pod (joined by wolf guard)

7 x grey hunters with mark of the wulfen, wolf standard, meltagun and drop pod (joined by wolf guard, wolf Priest and Ragnar)

5 x grey hunters with plasma gun and razorback with TLLC

6 x long fangs with 5 missile launchers and razorback with TLLC

I'd go with the first list. Rags is very powerful compared to Tau and is not needed. Furious charge is great for beating down other Marines, yet nothing the Tau have warrants this. When you can kill something dead, killing it dead-dead seems a bit of a waste, especially when you think that rarely will the Tau be fielding units with greater than ten men and those will just be kroot.

The Lucius pods mitigate the Dreads weakness to Railguns.

The Land Raider will either:

get targeted by the Railguns and get popped, causing you a sad face.

get targeted and absorb much Railgun fire, causing him sad face.

get ignored by shooting but get move blocked by piranhas, causing you sad face and leading to your Rhinos & Razors get smashed, causing you to get a sad face2

I think that the Lucius pods will ruin the Tau actually, locking his Broadsides up and allowing your transports to haul across the table, giving you the win.

Scouts will pressure him into deploying his guys >12" from the edges, resulting in small win due to perceived threat and now his guys are closer to the rest of yours.

Tell us how you won. I mean went ;)

When are we going to see some TWC eh? :woot:

The Golden Compass bears look pretty sweet ^_^

And on the off-topic. Well you'll learn to love it, or just tolerate it. Or still hate it. Either way, it will probably stay :P

One of the biggest disapointments against Tau are Thunderwolves.

unless you go first they can just chuck down too much high strength AP 1 and AP2

Also the low squad numbers are an issue. By the time the TWC can charge they are prime targets. Far too expensive as a distraction.

Pathfinders + Seeker Missile equipped vehicles = dead TWC :tu: and Dreads if striking from the rear.

Give relentless to a LF squad and EW to WP, just my 2 cents.

You need to keep your TWC out of sight or getting cover saves from having >50% in cover.

They cover 6+3.5 [or 9.5"] on T1

19" by T2 or you assault something for 31"

T3 you cover 40.5"

Unless your Tau foe is clever, you should be getting a charge by T3.

If he is firing at the TWC with Railguns, he is not shooting at your Rhinos.

You lose a 'landspeeder' cost TWC or a cheaper Rhino. However, the Rhino is carrying 200 pts of Grey Hunter. If he is going for the Rhinos, you are actually winning :)

If you can get cover for your TWC [perhaps even by using Fenwolves or existing cover] then you are halving the power of his Railguns. If he ignores the Fenwolves, they'll probably hammer the Tau anyway.

TWC are t5. Seekers are s8. No insta-death is inflicted.

The marker light hits on a 4+ and then the seeker hits on a 2+.

3/6 x 5/6 = 15/36 or 41.7% of hitting.

Much worse than the 66% that a hunter-killer missile hits on.

Those pods could very well win you the game. I played tau for years and I absolutely hated heavy flamers. You will destroy a squad of fire warriors with them easy. And dropping them in AND getting to assault is your bigget strength.

Word of caution be carefull what you do with them. I'd reccomend using them to take out all the railguns you can. If he has a broad side unit and a hammer head use one dread on each. If he has more units toating rail guns then you are going to have to chose which will be hit first. Broad sides wont be able to ding your dreads so dont think you have to wipe them out in one turn. Keeping them tied up is good enough, just watch side armor when you do finish them off, your opponent will be looking for a gaurenteed pen on rear armor.

:o How did those surly drunk critters make it into a discussion involving Tau?

They were made by the Old Ones to fight of the C'tan, which is why you need to emigrate to here. Just remember to bring some trees with you.

Perhaps the Old Ones made the Tau ~ possible conversation link?

:blink: How did those surly drunk critters make it into a discussion involving Tau?

If in doubt - blame Templars!

That's right.

It's always the tough kid who gets blamed for when things go wrong. :lol:

"Mister Inquisitor sir, we are not mutants. *doe eyes* Have you seen how many Templars there are?" :P

:P

Well there arent that many really..... -_-
