[Commission] Space Hulk Terminators and CAT

Pretty much stock termies, just clipped and trimmed the bases and glued them to 40mm's with some assorted Cities of Death bits. The CAT has had its antenna extended to match the pic on the rulebook with a piece of paperclip wire. Oddly the diameter seems to exactly match the existing plastic rod. Looks good, think I'll do that on my own too.

These bases are going to be finished in a jungle / 'Lost' theme - the bits are there to help fit some of the Space Hulk bases in, notably the steps on the librarian and the marine ripping up floor. The impression I want is that there's something old and forgotten buried in the jungle, so lots of creepers and ground vines, and almost no grass to be used... should be interesting.

So, the pics:

Pushing these on, the zenithal work is now done. If this seems slow it's because I've also brought my own set up to the same state... ;-) And because Vallejo Flat Red hates my airbrush. Back to GW Blood Red for me, I think.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, after the Christmas / New Year break I'm rolling again. Didn't quite get this guy finished today - about 2 hours to go on him I think, mostly gems and smoothing out some of the blends. OSL heavy, as per the client's specification. You'll notice the highlight and shade glazes have bumped the saturation on the mini. Quite pleased with how this is going. Around 7 hours work on top of the zenithal work as shown previously.

Not sure I'm qualified to comment on this as it's way beyond anything I could do but it's a beautiful mini. Especially like the way the yellow light mixes with the blue and green on the helmet. Looking forward to seeing the completed mini :)

The general red recipe is:

Zenithal base: VMC Burnt Cadmium Red -> Blood Red -> VMC Red-Orange -> VMC Red-Orange -> VMC Tan Yellow

Highlight glazes: Blood red -> VMC Red-Orange -> VMC Red-Orange/VMC Sunny Skintone

Shade glazes: Asurmen blue (thinned)

Edge highlights: VMC Red-Orange->VMC Sunny Skintone

Unify glazes: Baal red (thinned)

The client didn't like the brass etch either, so I've removed it and put some reindeer moss on there. Probably going to tweak some more- I have some different foliage I can try - the fern leaves are OK I think... can also try scribing and kinking the leaves to give it some more life...

I've also added a tiny bit of weathering / chipping as per the client's request:

... although I did get some positive comments about the purple flowers. I do think they were a bit too tall, so they're back, shorter. Heh. I tweak a lot, but this is sort of the template for the rest. If the client likes it, the rest will be done more or less identically.

The crux is really very simple ; Black basecoat followed by charadon granite, then codex grey, then fortress grey. On the flat parts, paint the outer line first (with granite) before putting in the horizontal lines with a little black gap between them. Then highlight those as you would normally with the codex and fortress grey.

Today's photo dumpage. Some work done on the chipping on Omnio (gotta love brand new Series 7's), and the CAT painted up. I'm liking the blue backdrops a lot more than the black - so much easier to photograph on.

Omnio:

The CAT:

Both together:

The chips are pretty easy - just paint blobs of your extreme highlight colour (with a DECENT brush - new Series 7's for me today, yay!) and then paint those a very dark colour (off black toward red in this case), leaving a tiny bit of the light colour showing. On the CAT I've put some boltgun metal in there too. Not sure if I'll do that for the terminators, or use a grey colour to represent ceramite.
