A Thousand Sons

ICHD?

Recommended Posts

Just a random thought I had a moment ago, possibly down to a spaghetti overdose: The Space Wolves persecuted the Thousand Sons with such zeal because they hate Psykers (and because The Emperor said to do so). So, why then, do they use Librarians, such as Othere Wyrdmake? Surely that'd be like saying "I hate Matt Damon so much, so I bought all his films on DVD!"?

ah no, this is typical space wolf stuff

"we hate psykers! That's why we have wolf priests. They commune with spirits and stuff, they don't use the warps!"

"emperor's tarot is nonsense, stupid card laying! That's warp-stuff man. We just throw runes to predict the future, that's how it should be done, and is nothing alike at all!"

Uhm....but Thousand Sons shows Othere Wyrdmake using the warp.

The point to the lesson is that, as Ahriman put it, it's really just a matter of names and rituals. Because X is done on Prospero and Y is done on Fenris, to the Wolves, X is witchcraft and Y is natural, even if both X and Y are part of the same alphabet. It's like trying to convince someone from the southern US that the appropriate name for a carbonated beverage is "pop", when to them it's "soda"; it's the same substance with the same properties bottled in the same places, but god help you for starting that argument.

I'd have to give out a spoiler to answer this.

I respectfully disagree. With a name like Othere Wyrdmake, he's not exactly going to be baking cakes for a living, he is a minor character and it doesn't give away a lot of the plot.

It's a matter of viewpoint. The Space Wolves have more of a tribal shaman type view on their rune priests. They use all their talismans and trinkets. The TS are more of the standard sorcery type who use it straight from the warp, non-filtered. If you look in the book, Wyrdmake actually explains in great detail how they are different.

I always liked the first version i read of Nikea, which made sorcery, but not the use of psychic ability, illegal.

there is a difference between the two abilites, and if this was the most recent version it would clear up alot of the nonsense.

I'm referring to the specific role he played in the novel, which explains why he was using those powers.

 :P :)

SW are pretty superstitious and stubborn guys. To me their attitude towards psykers seems like hypocrisy and substitution of concepts. They employ the same means, however they call them differently and give different explanations. IMHO this happens because of their fear of the unknown. There are a few hints in the novel that SW 'barbaric' image is not the 'actual' one, like they try to hide something behind this 'mask'. I hope that there will be more insight into SW nature provided in 'Prospero Burns'.

Never mentioned that. I just said he is a rune priest, and, as is standard practice to rune priests, he uses the warp. Doesn't spoil anything.
