UltraMarines Movie

First off I wish NOT to blaspheme my Brothers of the Wolf. I am first and foremost a Son of Russ to my very core.

I just finished watching this first (of many in the franchise, I hope) and have to say I was impressed. Not the greatest thing I've ever seen but it was pretty well written, by Dan Abnett, and definitely gave you an impression in visual and aural of what it is to be an Astartes. I shall give away no spoilers but this first endeavor left me wanting more. I hope to the Emperor that GW decides to further this franchise and open up the possibilities to showing the masses a glimpse of the rich variety there can be with the other Chapters as well as from the 40K Universe.

The story started off a bit slow. Perhaps to add a dramatic effect or give the taste of impending doom or just cut from the tome "....in the darkness of Space...." Kind of thing. It was okay though. It looks very much like they used the graphics engine used in the "Dawn of War" PC Game for the cinematic cuts. Much more refined and smoother though. THe graphics are also less blocky and very much more refined as well. You can still tell it's CGA and not on the level of console game cinematics but sufficient for the task displayed. If they stick with it and don't change it dramatically between releases then I'll be just fine with it.

I read the small comic book/mini graphic novel that came with first. It introduces some of the principal characters. The packaging, well, to say it was elaborate and perhaps a little over the top would actually be understating things. Perhaps because it is the first. In any case I can give my hearty endorsement to anyone who feels so inclined to have a gander.

I'm no movie critic of Oscar caliber but I know what I like. For a fan of 40K I will say it's a can't miss. I would be happy to field questions but I will NOT give away any information that could be considered "spoiler" material. You will have to watch for yourself to find out what meat there is on this particular bone and whether or not you find it palatable.

I would like to say that the available story lines within the 40K Universe allow for MANY many possiblilities for future projects in this format. Even a couple-few mini series are very possible. There is no necessity with this format to go through the "comic book to movie transition". That is to say that unlike "X-men" and other Marvel related, there is no necessity to go through the introduction of how the characters came to be and so on before getting into the meat of the story.

We can all concede that this can be a visual version of the Black Library. Meaning releases are not mandated to be in chronological order with the canon timeline from the days of he Emperor to the present (in the 40K Universe) NOT to condone alternate timelines either because THAT is why I haven't seen that JJ Abams (hack) version of Star Trek. What I mean is that that the Ragnar Saga has been out for some time now and he is the youngest Wolf Lord ever within our Chapter. Prospero Burns and the Battle of the Fang happened well before Ragnar Blckmane came to be and those two books have just released and are pending release next summer respectively. That's what I mean.

Follow on projects do not have to be in line with THE timeline. They can be exerps or even be based on certain important or specific campaigns in a Chapters history. They can also be smaller in scale to represent a special facet of a Chapter, our own Lone Wolves or Scouts for instance, or even our Venerable Dreads which may even get GW to reinstate their former glory with "the most and oldest Dreadnaughts in the Imperium" making them truly VENERABLE once again, unlike the current "everybody gets them, the same way, except the SW's cannot have Siege Dreads" and such.

A coreleased project like the Battle of the Fang would be EPIC. From a pure mrking perspectivev, youavtepprbck, and audio CD rleasing one week and two weeks later the DVD drops. OMG it's somethng for every Spave Wolf to drewl over :D http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v457/tyggrr65/Gifs/drewl.gif Am I RIGHT!!!!!!

by the way werent most of the marines who were head shotted not wearing helmets? sounds like a public service announcement. "FOR THE LOVE OF THE EMPEROR WEAR YOUR HELMETS!". I also expected a more organized black legion, some cultists too....
If we keep this here, how about we change the discussion of what we liked and didn't like about the movie with respect to what we would like to see in a space wolf version.

I still haven't seen the movie but from what I can gather viewing the trailer....NOT BEARDY ENOUGH !!!

Oh wait  only SW really have massive beardige. So I guess that means SPACE WOLVES MOVIE-want BEARDY space marines!!!(who drink mead [in their Mead Halls] and sing songs[like in the recent-ish Beowulf adaptation] and fight with sword, axe and spear [and advanced space weaponry!].)

That's what I want...seriously ;)

I personally understand why it is straight to dvd. Remember the Final Fantasy movie? The movie is appealing to a smaller market. To make it appeal to a larger one you end up alienating your original fanbase and fail to get new fans. To release it straight to dvd you can make a movie that is intended for your fanbase without breaking the bank.
It is kinda OK - for Ultras I mean. Apart from several issues, which were not explained btw - the crozius???, cunning BL taking sniper headshots first and then blindly shooting at a totally exposed squad and missing, stupid charges etc, the movie was enjoyable for a 40k fan. Given the limited numbers of movies in this area - the only I remember are cinematic trailers from Final Liberation, then that old movie with Inquisitor and DA, and the rest are trailers from DoW, the Ultramarines were quite a refreshing experience.
