What do i get?

Had to give up 40k for some personal reasons for 6 months, and just went into my store last week. Besides being very happily remembered, most remembered me as "that guy who used Abbadon a lot". Before taking my break, i had gotten a small BA force running, but i'm honestly not sure what way i want to go now. I just want options on what to expand on for now.

What I have

Librarian

Librarian Dreadnought (Frag Cannon)

10 tac marines (pretty much usesless as i've read)

10 Assault Marines (JP's & 2 Fist sarge's)

5 Death company (JP's & 1 fist)

5 Death Company (2 fists)

Rhino

Devestators (4 Plasma Cannons)

What I Want

Baal Preadator (Hellstorm)

Stormraven (if it comes out in February)

Sanguiniary Priest (JP).

And yeah that's it...I was never really good on planning for the future with my army. I got really lucky with Chaos but now i'm too nervous to go out and buy stuff without knowing how its going to tie into my force.

Tactical squads are not worthless they just play differently from the RAS. Morticon uses them in every list so you may want to search for a few of his lists in the BA army list section. The primary difference in terms of winning you the game between tactical squads and RAS is that the RAS as is mentioned in the DOA tips/tricks thread are not cheap. Without a dedicated and relatively cheap dakka oriented squad such as a tactical squad sitting on your objective you run the risk of wasting/ no fully utilizing your RAS' abilities. For this reason the DOA lists tend to go for a complete knockout in hopes of crippling the enemy's ability to claim objectives. With the enemy either completely annihilated or hurt so bad they can't score your remaining infantry are then free to claim you one more objective than the enemy has. On the flipside the tactical squad can sit on the objective more or less from turn one. Depending on their armament you can make them have quite a formidable threat zone that may deter individuals from committing manpower to take it. For example, a plasma gun and multi-melta tactical squad sitting on an objective in cover has a 24" threat bubble and can attack any armor value. In addition the squad becomes deadlier as the enemy closes due to rapid fire on the plasma gun and the half range on the multi-melta. Should you feel inclined you could stick a PF on the sergeant as well to deter the charge. Anywho, I felt compelled to add a little more to that rather than settling for "tacticals are useless."

If you opt for a DOA/JP army then I'd suggest reading the DOA tips and tricks thread a few lines down.

What approach were you thinking of running your army? Mech, semi-mech, jump packs, slogger?

Regardless you may consider buying a jump pack for your librarian. If you plan to run your JP DC you may also consider buying Lemartes. Keep his squad small (4-5) DC with a power weapon.

sorry it took me so long to reply on this...i kept forgetting to check this post. Well i'm not really sure what competitive lists there are right now, but mech or semi-mech is what i'm learning towards. So that would mean getting more assault marines, rhino's, baal's, and pods for my dreadnoughts (which i have transformed into furioso's after reading the dang faq rule ^_^ ) i'm thinking to get a baal preadator next for my army, will my fusioso's fill in for my lack of anti-tank?

If you want a competitive list, you should look towards pure DoA. Or pure mech. The mix of jump and mech (hybrid list) is a bit tough to run.

As for AT-capabilities. IMHO Baal Pred with its TLAc is good against armor. If you want additional AT-fire then I'd suggest you take dakka preds with LCs. I'm not sure if dreads are good for pure-mech list, as the BA have one special thing: all rhino-based transports are fast, so the dreads won't be able to keep up with the pace of the rest of your army. Regarding Furiosos... Droppodding them them is an idea, and it may thrill you opponent well, but keep in mind, if you run mech list, every droppod-dread consumes the points, you may spend on preds and razors (and they will provide more long ranged AT-fire).

Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

SR + libby (shield/lance (or blood boil or fear)) + priest (LC/combim) + sternguard (PW, HF, HF, combis) + fragfury is a pretty good lump of points to spend on a DoA or Mech army. Awesome close-medium firepower on a single reserve roll. In fact, it's close to impossible for most other codexes to compete with it's price and concept let alone integrated rules... and it can still assault like a middleweight.

You can give the libby and priest jps if you want, which will make them work in other lists easy as well as being able to move to other units when no longer with the sternies in the above example.

You could buy a DC (+sanguard?) box and use the bling to convert your tacticals and deva marines to 'qualify' maybe. May need to just buy a box to get combi weapons if finding the bits is hard. =(

See if you can model or convert a couple of heavy flamers for them (ultimately) and they'll be insanely useful. Hflamers can shoot on disembark.
