With respect to the fate of the missing legions, GW has stated this was done for fans to to come up with their own ideas.

I've always disliked this line of reasoning by GW. If the primarchs are removed/killed and the space marines disbanded/killed, how could the fans come up their own ideas.

It's not as if somebody could make their own legion and play it on the TT, since the missing legions would certainly not be around anymore 10k years later.

Or did they mean the fans can come up with their own stories? Still doesn't feel right to me. But then I'm somebody who likes certainties. It's not that I'm too lazy to use my own imagination, I just prefer to know everything there is to know about something and I don't like things that are implied or hinted at.

Can't remember in which thread it was, but ADB actually mentioned that the Ultramarines taking up the leftovers of the exterminated two legions was just an off comment by that character and shouldn't be taken as fact.

I was referencing the time where all you had was two missing legions with absolutely no hint as to why they were missing. So it was a sentiment in the past so to speak. Now, it would make no sense as they are revealing more of their demise.

In terms of facts, yes, as I read the comment in the book it does not read as fact but as assumption/hypothesis. The only fact we have is that they did something wrong and were 'corrected'.
