DeathRaven WIP

VardenV2

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. During the past few days I have been busting out my old incomplete Deathwing and Ravenwing models and giving them the time on the painting table they deserve. I thought I'd share my progress thus far as I continue to re-do some aspects of my older models that were painted when I wasn't quite as patient or good (that white armor is a b****!) Any comments are appreciated!

First off, my Ravenwing Sergeant!

I tried to use a two-toned color technique for the sword. I painted the whole thing black, then painted one side with a wash of dark angels green (water and DA green) and then went over it with a mix of DA green and Black. I did the same on the other side to make a heraldic checkerboard effect. I outlined the edges with Chainmail to make the sword look very sharp and like it was glowing hot with the energy of a power weapon.

And here is my "old" Deathwing Squad that I am revisiting for touch-ups. Some pictures are old, as I finished the Sgt this afternoon. Of course, comments are welcome :D

Here's my Deathwing Sgt. w/ his banner completed. I chose to mix up the design on his chainfist to make him stand out more. Also, this was my first attempt at a darker skin tone as opposed to the standard 'bald screaming white guy' that is so typical of Space Marines. Dark Angels are supposed to recruit from all over the place, so I figured they would have a few black guys. Also, the dark skin tone looks great with the contrast of white armor! Any comments or advice is welcome!

Here's the freehand chainfist design

Thanks for any CC!

Seeing this makes me wish i could strip and re-paint my DA (damn weather). However you do require some shading:

-I would recommend you wash everything except the black (including the terminator armour) with devlan mud, then re-apply the colour you have used (eg, skull white on the terminator, bleached bone on the robes etc.)

-For the Black I would recommend a badab black wash followed by some adeptus battle grey or codex grey highlights.

Hope this helps

Will the mud make the DW look like they are bone colored or will they stay white? I like the white color more than the classic bone/tan color for some reason. Should i use straight up Devlan Mud or mix it with some water? I tried to add some greyish highlights by using really thinned down black ink into the little creases of the boots and elbow pads etc. and then painting some skull white over the little lines that are left after it dries outside of the cracks. Is that what you mean with the mud? Or are you talking about basically dipping the model and then re-touching raised areas?

Also, with the grey highlights, do u mean drybrush or go along the edges carefully to get a really exaggerated line on the geometric aspects of the bikes and backpack etc?

-If you re-paint the deathwing with skull white on all but the deepest recesses they will still be white but look as though dirt has collected on their armour, like they're mid-campaign.

-It's probably best to use straight up devlan mud and cover them heavily in it.

-As for the grey highlights, it would look best if you edge highlighted (go along the edges carefully to get a really exaggerated line) like GW does, but if you were careful and focused on the edges primarily you might just get away with drybrushing, though you may have to ink it with some watered down badab black all over to make it look better.

NO NO

Mix black ink/hawk turquoise with buttloads of water, and then use it to wash the white.

Then you can go back over the white.

Lots + lots of water.

I think that may give a better look actually. I like the highlights to be grey, not brownish. I'll try both out on a tester model and see which i like best I think. Should i was the ENTIRE model as I am understanding it or should I just try and slip a little bit of the solution into the cracks?

Also, what about Ultramarines blue? Will that work as well as turquoise or is it too powdery and light?

Blue works well too, it just depends on your colour preference, and yeah just wash all the white parts.

The entire thing. If you get the amount of water right, you'll only need to go and re-apply thinned down white to the raised areas.

You want say, one drop of black ink/turquoise, and then like 6 - 8 drops of water. Definitely test it out on an older model to see if you like it though.

Ive posted a couple of my models using this method in this thread if you want to see what the outcome will look like, more or less.

I know they're mostly black, but the white parts i do with the whole turquoise/black wash.

Ok ill try it out. The bone/tan color in the cracks might look better actually because a lot of the other colors are tan, red, and gold/warmer colors (besides the dark green). If I as using black with white, then the grey might look better. I'll give em both a shot though! Thanks!

OK, a quick update on how the touch-ups are going.

After I did a bit of experimentation, I decided to go with a 50/50 wash of Devlan mud and water. I covered the entire model(s) with it, but made sure to get extra amounts in the cracks. It barely changes the color of the white and actually makes the armor look a lot smoother color. There are of course some blotchy spots on the flat surfaces which I tried to avoid by soaking up some of the excess wash with a dry fluffy brush. It worked out ok. The better painted models (such as the sergeant) look a LOT better and the ok ones still look ok. I will have to do some drybrushing on the helmets and hands etc, and add some nice long smooth coats of white paint to the flat areas (shin pads, knee caps, shoulders, chest) in order to pull even more out of the contrast. If this still doesn't work, I might do the process again and focus even more wash in the creases.

I'll post pictures tomorrow when I have some better quality light.

Thank you very much! I always love paying extra attention to those little tid-bits of bling on my guys haha. It's always a real eye grabber when the purity seals are all decked out in text etc.

And yes I freehand ALL my symbols. My first attempts were mediocre but now with my Terminators they look pretty good i must say! I always like the freehand look because no two models look the same, and that adds character imo. The transfers are so sterile and boring. The only one that I didn't freehand is the red winged sword w/ skull on the sergeants shoulder. i used it to cover up an =I= symbol that I shaved off :/

Posting new pics momentarily!!!!

OK! Here's the update with LOTS of photos. I need to go and drybrush and add white touch-ups to all the terminators, and add greyish highlights to all the bikes and the Dreadnought. Comments on how the devlan mud wash turned out are appreciated. I think it did add a good amount of detail. and that will only improve after the white is added :)

First off, here's soem pictures of the "good" parts of my army in it's entirety. I have another unpainted attack bike w/multi-melta as well as a whole six man ravenwing squad (3.5 edition) with a flamer. Unfortunately Sammael has broken for the FOURTH time yesterday and he looks like garbage becaus eof all the touch-ups and repairs I have had to do to him... ugh. As of now, the only high-quality squads I have are my deathwing terminators, Ravenwing Bikers, attack bike, land speeder, Chaplain, and Dreadnought. The other stuff is old and mediocre. Oh well!

I have a LOT of light on these guys and kind of a crappy camera so bear with me here :/

you know something, what your miniatures lack in technical skill is more than made up by the fact they ooze character and have alot of soul. clearly youre trying hard with techniques youre not familiar with however your work is very good. my advice to you is invest is some of the washes if you havent already done so and maybe a few foundation paints. but youre doing really well so far ~smiles~ keep up the great work there ok VardenV2.

:) Exsellsior!!!

+++ edit +++ at this stage dont worry about mould lines or drilling gun barrels, that sort of thing comes with time.

Yeha i never bother with either. I figure with my skill in terms of shaving and drilling I'd do more harm than good haha.

Also, thanks for all the nice comments! It means a lot. Most people jsut think there's something 'off' about all my models... but then again, maybe that's jsut my style. It works for my Orks ahah. Cause well, they are orks. (id post but this is SM only forum :/) I try and make every space marine model unique somehow. Whether it is a bit, pose, color scheme, freehand decal etc. i always like them to be individuals. Not faceless clones like so many other armies have (tyranids, guard, marines, NECRONS) lol.

Also, I am old school in my paints and techniques haha. I never do an 'assembly line' process like some people, I prefer inks to drybrushing or a combination of the two to get an effect. Also, I like my models to look PAINTED. It adds a human touch to them I think that a lot of people purposely try to avoid to get that super-real look. I like my guys to have some personality, a story, and a LOOK that only I can give them. Of course, i want them to look good too of course, but i like my little 'mess ups' sometimes. They keep things interesting. I guess it;s like legos. it's fun to make the sets, but it's the ones you built yourself that are always your favorites, even if they don't look the best haha (strange analogy but i saw about a billion legos shopping in Toys R Us today).

Just thought I'd share. Im always curious what people have to think of my models because im not really a stellar conversion/modeller, painter, or a super exemplary gamer. I do it for the fun of it and for the LOLz with friends.
