Mazer Rackham
Firstly, Merry Christmas! Today guys, today I bring a plea to have you examine a list I put together. I'm facing off against a Chaos player in the New Year (a great bloke) and I wanted to represent my GK as an admiral (already have plenty of 'em waiting for the new Codex!) I haven't played against Chaos before and any general tips would cool. I don't know what he's bringing with him...but I want to give him a good game. Anyway - onto the list! Master of the Fleet Terminator Boarding Party 7 x Space Marine Strike Cruiser 5 x Gladius Frigate 4 x Hunter Destroyer. I stacked up on SC's because I wanted plenty of Thunderhawks and Bombardment cannons and I put the Hunters in for Boarding/Normal torps. I know the SC's are a touch fragile, but the FW model is gorgeous and a good price. It's 1500 on the nose. Thoughts? MR. Vaaish
Terminator boarding party probably won't be of much use, better to see about picking up an extra reroll if you can get the points by dropping them for all your ordnance. Some interesting options are soon to be available to marines too. Going all SC is a pretty workable direction for marines though. Against chaos it'll be rough either way. Long range lances will tear into your SC and you will need them squadroned to use effectively. That means you are going to need to be careful when you brace. It's better to end a turn with a SC crippled or close to it than to brace the squadron and end up with 1/2 firepower for all of them and be sitting ducks next turn. Brother Smitty
Hey there, As a chaos player myself I would expect to bring a heavy hitter (either a desolator or a despoiler) and lots of cruiser support. Desolator: It has massed lances and torps that can kill you at range. 60cm range I think so don't let it get broadside on you and lock on or poof! If this is taken, expect either a devestation cruiser or a Styx heavy cruiser for fighter support. The styx is crazy for the points, 8 ordinance markers for a very cheap cost so you'll see a lot of assault boats pouring at you. Despoiler: IMO the best BB in the game. Enough firepower to get in close with an enemy fleet and enough ordinance to really mess up your day. I usually combine this with a Repulsive GC for extra firepower. Good 1-2 punch. Chaos cruisers are really good at enveloping your fleet with above average speed. Slaughter cruisers can move 30cm normally and can be in your backfield by turn 2 so be careful. 2 slaughters and some escorts make a really good flanking force as Chaos escorts can be very powerful if taken in numbers, which at 1500pts is a possibility. It'll be really easy to get 4-5 cruisers into a game of 1500pts if points are used wisely. Tactics: Standard chaos tactics involve encirclement and picking off your weaker ships before closing the noose on the remaining fleet. If I were playing against your list I would immediately be sending all my ordinance in as assault boats against your SC's to keep them on the defensive. You won't have enough thunderhawks to take on the ordinance 1 on 1 so I'd concentrate on sending wave after wave into your line. My fast cruisers would then try to separate your escorts from the main fleet and destroy them piecemeal. Then hammer your remaining SC's from all sides. If you can find out what's here's planning on bringing let me know and we can dissect it further . Good Luck! Mazer Rackham
Afraid at this moment, his list is just a plain mystery Brother Smitty :eek Your post makes for interesting reading - I wasn't worried about Torps much. but yes asasault boats can be a bit naughty -I hadn't really considered facing them, so thanks for the input. With encirclement, I can certainly see the advantage of the longer range lances picking away at my fleet, death by a thousand cuts as it were. I'll have to see what he's got and we can go through it like you said. I appreciate the offer and the advice thus far. MR.
