Protagonist.

Grey Mage

Recommended Posts

So, without going into the territory of self-description, ie dont put yourself in power armor, what would you like to see in a SW protagonist?

Assume for a moment that you have the ability to throw in some ideas for a black library book at the brain-storming level, what would you say?

Brainstorming rules apply- no such thing as a bad idea, try not to repeat, and each idea will get equal consideration.

An humble and strong Wolf Guard, that can push Land Raiders into lava streams and hold off a horde of Orks all by his one-sies.

I want that. Ranulf FTW.

Dammit! Ninja'd already. First guy that popped into my head was Ranulf, and lo and behold already two requests in for him.

There is little enough on the 13th Company. Perhaps Torvald prior to or in the process of being forsaken within the Warp. That would be EPIC in my opinion. The strength his of will and commitment to the mission as well as caretaker of the 13th while they are cut off.

A Wolf Scout, the cold and mysterious warriors that are always present, just not observed. A different breed of fighter from Fenris, one who does not indulge in the usual camaraderie, isolating themselves from the rest of their Company but providing a vital role.

I want a story about the early days of Leman of the Russ. How he united the tribes of Fenris, and eventually after the legion was formed, how he decided to disband the tribes to keep them feral, at war with each other to keep them tough as nails! I also wouldn't mind a mythology like story, similar to the short story "Twelve Wolves" with Leman and how he conquered the beast of Fenris. From taming the blackmane wolves to the two headed beast morkai himself!

Ranulf's story would be cool but his character development would be predictable. I think a story on Ulrik the Slayer would give the chapter so much more depth, his rise to becoming "Fangfather" to mentoring great heroes, watching Logan become a great wolf, and even slaying several World Eaters at the 1st war of Armageddon, in return getting a salute from the daemon primarch Angron himself. Think of all the secrets he has... his thoughts and fears, the things he has to shoulder and the aspirants he has to constantly put into place.

Good stuff Mav! Though what is this "Twelve Wolves" short story you refer to?

I think a somewhat fantastical tale recounting Leman Russ before or even including when he meets the Emperor would be great, perhaps told in part by a Skald?

I really liked Helsreach, with Grimaldus as the main man. I am sure that Ulrik could be an as good or even better source of material :eek

.... although I did imagine Grimaldus sounding like Darth Vader with his helmet on and 'just' James Earl Jones when without his helmet, so he'd be pretty hard to top :eek

For me, Grey Mage, it is stories about dudes who have had their fingers in a few pies that are interesting. Take Ulrik for example. Pushing for Wolf Lord selection, so obviously having all the attributes and traits that would demand and then making what could be a massive crisis of faith decision, to refuse perhaps the highest honour other than being Great Wolf for a very different role. I think that gives the character a built in chance of depth and development that a single career guy might not have?

Twelve Wolves by Ben Counter

It's a short story in "Legends of the Space Marines". The story walks with a Long Fang and a Blood Claw through the siege of Fenris as the Long Fang explains the twelve mythic wolves of Fenris Lore.

I always liked those "one of thelast of his generation" space wolfs . Guys that never made it to guard or priesthood and didnt die too . And now they are 100-200 years old , cant be long fangs[one dude] , so they are made instructors or sgts , grim with no chance to ever make it in to the sagas and with no one to share the story .

Oooh, a Space Wolves novel I could get into.

I would like to see a story about a lone wolf who finds and kills the creature/person/eldar/CSM/demon/ect.... that killed his pack and then returns home to fenris to join his fellow wolves once again.

This too.

With apologies to TT and Ahriman...and the DA...*

How about a story of a dynamic rune priest with a want for knowledge who gathers slightly dangerous rps to a place where they can be safe- however the inquisition takes offense and sends the dark angels to force them to stop- however the DA are told by a loyal contact that new orders have come in to destroy them as they are practicing warp magic. So the DA attack and start to wipe everyone out but the protagonist sends them through the warp to protect them- however they arnt safe as the wolfen curse starts to inflict itself on every one but the knowledgeable rp. So to protect them he casts a spell on them but all this does is enslave the wolves for the ruinous powers etc etc and the rp is left wondering what he did wrong as his people are taken away from him an he's banished, searching for a mystical dog kennel of infinite knowledge to make him all powerful and such and maybe undo what he did (just maybe). Everyone else either shun him, pity him, attempt to kill him ( but they can't he's too awesome) or think he's...barking up the wrong tree ...and everyone went back to hating the DA and all was right in the world.

THE END-and goodnight!

*and every one else for reading it
